The Game Of Thrones series is home to many incredible things, two of which are wonderful characters and extreme levels of killing and death. The two come together with many characters, from Jon Snow to even Tyrion Lannister, but perhaps nobody more than in the beloved, fierce, and iconic Arya Stark, whose growth and change from start to finish is something to behold.

After going on the run, and a continuous stream of bad news and luck, Arya manifests a list of those she plans on killing. Arya’s kill list gets filled with many names, a couple of whom die at Arya’s hand, some who get phased off the list, but also a lot of whom get killed before she can get there.

Updated on October 1st, 2021 by Rhys McGinley: Characters got put on Arya’s kill list for a multitude of reasons, and all ended up dead somehow via various means. Multiple characters got taken off the list over the years, and most characters ended up dying deaths away from Arya and Needle. Arya did get to cross a couple of individuals off her kill list, though, and when she did, the deaths were often brutal, epic, and definitely worth noting along with the episodes that each character dies in so fans can relive the satisfying moments over and over again.

13 Ilyn Payne’s Fate Is Uncertain

Ilyn Payne got put on Arya’s death list for his execution of Eddard Stark in season 1, something that made fans hate the mute knight, never mind Ned’s actual daughter.

Due to the health issues of actor Wilko Johnson, Payne got gradually phased out of the series, and in the same vein got phased off of Arya Stark’s kill list. How he died, and if he dies is unknown. He may well have died during Daenerys’ destruction of the Red Keep or may have left King’s Landing long before. Season 4 is the last time the character ever got mentioned.

12 Thoros Of Myr Froze To Death Beyond The Wall – “Beyond The Wall”

Red Priest of the Lord of Light and member of the Brotherhood Without Banners, Thoros of Myr played an important recurring role in the series in seasons 3, 6, and 7 before his death, and got a temporary place on Arya’s list.

This was because he sold Gendry to Melisandre, which prompted her to leave them behind in anger. As time went on, Thoros got phased off the list, probably since he did not do anything near what others on the list did. Thoros ended up freezing to death beyond the wall in season 7 as he and a group of other characters hunted a Wight.

11 Beric Dondarrion Got Killed By Wights During The Battle Of Winterfell – “The Long Night”

Like Thoros, Beric got put on Arya’s list for his selling of Gendry to Melisandre, and like Thoros he got phased off the list. Unlike Thoros, though, Arya met Beric again, with that reunion coming during the Battle of Winterfell.

That battle proved to be the place where Beric’s true purpose would come to fruition. After dying many times beforehand, Beric takes his final stand helping Arya Stark (and the Hound) to safety and getting stabbed to death by Wights. Arya then went on to kill the Night King in her most iconic scene. Despite being on Arya’s list, he eventually saved her life and the lives of perhaps all of Westeros.

10 Melisandre Died Of Old Age After Removing Her Enchanted Necklace – “The Long Night”

The Red Priestess Melisandre was in the exact same boat as Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr. She got placed on the list for taking Gendry and soon thereafter got taken off the list as Arya focused on more important targets.

Melisandre assured Arya they would meet again after she tells the young Stark about the eyes she would close forever – a premonition that fans debate about, unsure if Arya did really fulfill it. This came at the Battle of Winterfell where Melisandre would meet her end, not in the battle itself, but after, as she willingly removes her enchanted necklace and succumbs to the freezing cold and old age.

9 Rorge Got Killed By Arya Using Needle – “Mockingbird”

Rorge did not spend much time on Arya’s list, but he’s one of the few people who Arya did manage to check off eventually.

Rorge threatened Arya while he was a prisoner. When she and the Hound run into Rorge and the biter, Arya finds out Rorge’s name, adds him to the list, and promptly stabs him through the heart with Needle.

8 Polliver Got Stabbed In The Neck By Arya With Needle – “Two Swords”

Polliver is another minor character in the grand scheme of the show, but one who had a significant impact on Arya and her journey after he not only killed Lommy but did it with, and then stole, Needle.

When the Hound and Arya run into Polliver and other soldiers in a tavern of sorts, the Hound pretty much destroys half of them, with Arya taking back Needle, toying with Polliver, and sticking it in his neck. It is a ruthless kill, but not close to Arya’s most brutal kill.

7 Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane Fell To His Death During Cleganebowl – “The Bells”

Brother of Sandor, a character that has thrice changed its actor, one of the most brutal killers in Game Of Thrones, and eventual mutation of a man, Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane is a force to be reckoned with, either alive or dead.

The Mountain secured his place on Arya’s list, not for his association with Cersei and the Lannisters, but his torture of people at Harrenhal. Gregor eventually died for good in season 8 during the long-awaited Cleganebowl at the hands of his brother.

6 Sandor ‘The Hound’ Clegane Fell To His Death During Cleganebowl – “The Bells”

Gregor’s brother, Sandor Clegane, was not on Arya’s kill list by the end of the show, but rather than get phased out, Arya more consciously removed him. He earned his spot on it for the killing of Lackey and for being a Lannister dog.

After a duel with Brienne of Tarth, the Hound looked on the brink of death, with Arya leaving him there to do so rather than give him a mercy kill. That did not kill him, of course, and his death came in the Cleganebowl with his brother, but Arya admitted that she removed him from her list even before she left him for dead. In the end, the Hound may have been Arya’s greatest friend.

5 Meryn Trant Was Assassinated By Arya In A Brothel – “Mother’s Mercy”

Meryn Trant has by far the most brutal and even hard-to-watch death on this list. He’s notably one of the earliest people to hurt Arya, quickly getting a place on her list when she first speaks of it.

It was his act of killing Syrio Forel and his general role in the Lannister coup that secured his place in her bad books. In season 5’s finale, on Braavos, Arya secured her revenge after Trant frequented a brothel there where he abused children, stabbing him in both eyes and then killing him.

4 Joffrey Baratheon Got Poisoned At The Purple Wedding – “The Lion And The Rose”

One of Game Of Thrones’ most hated and most excellent villains was Joffrey. He was not exactly the most popular man in Westeros, least of all with the Starks after not only torturing Sansa for a long time but for betraying and ordering the execution of Ned Stark.

It was, of course, that act that got him on Arya’s list, but long before Arya could get anywhere near back to King’s Landing and Joffrey, he was poisoned and killed at his wedding by Olenna Tyrell and Littlefinger.

3 Tywin Lannister Was Shot By Tyrion, With A Crossbow, On The Toilet – “The Children”

The Lannisters were a source of incredible pain and brought immense hatred and anger out of Arya. Despite this, the patriarch of the family formed quite the odd couple pairing with Arya in Season 2.

Nevertheless, Tywin was on Arya’s kill list for his being at war with and leading the charge against her brother. Tywin eventually met his end at the hands of his son Tyrion, who murdered Tywin with a crossbow for sleeping with the woman he loved and sentencing him to die. Dying on the toilet is an ironic death for one of the show’s smartest, most ruthless villains.

2 Cersei Lannister Was Crushed By The Rubble Of The Red Keep – “The Bells”

There is a sense that, in some way, Arya has some respect for Tywin through their fantastic scenes together. His daughter, on the other hand, is someone who commands zero respect from any Stark.

There are a plethora of reasons any one person in Westeros would want to end Cersei’s life; it was her role in Arya’s father’s death, as well as the death of Sansa’s Direwolf Lady, that earned a place on Arya’s kill list. She died in Jaime’s arms, getting crushed by the Red Keep during Daenerys’ brutal, villainous burning of King’s Landing, a death many seen to be underwhelming.

1 Walder Frey & House Frey Were Murdered By Arya – “The Winds Of Winter”

Arya does not manage to actually kill many people on her list, but by far and away, the most significant person she crosses off of her list herself is Walder Frey, who found his way there for his part in the Red Wedding. After returning to Westeros following her departure from Braavos, Arya found her way to the Riverlands, disguised as an unassuming maiden, to get near Walder Frey.

She revealed that the pie in front of him was made of his sons’ flesh before finally slitting his throat, ensuring he knew a Stark killed him. In doing so, Arya all but confirmed the Old Gods’ presence by making true the myth of the Rat Cook. To rub salt on the wounds, she used Walder’s skin to impersonate him while watching all of House Frey’s men die by poisoning, the most epic set of deaths to come from Arya Stark’s kill list.
