2021 has certainly been a great year for Nintendo despite the obstacles that the video game industry has faced due to the pandemic. They were able to release the revised Switch with an OLED screen as well as release multiple award-winning games across many genres such as Metroid Dread.

But what will 2022 have in store for Nintendo and the gamers who enjoy their products? While some titles have already been confirmed to be released next year, Reddit users are predicting what gamers might expect in the new year, from likely release dates for confirmed titles to desired ports of games that have yet to be available on the Switch.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Could Be Released in the Fall

One of the most successful and critically acclaimed games throughout the series, it was no surprise to see that Nintendo was working on a sequel to Breath of the Wild, one of the best adventure games to play on the Switch. With the gameplay teased last year during E3, Nintendo stated that the game will be released sometime in 2022.

ChronoisCross1999 believes that the game will be available in November, but even then can see it getting potentially delayed until 2023. But as they state, next year will be the Switch’s 5th year and “would be satisfied if BOTW2 was the only Zelda-related content that we got in 2022.”

Metroid Prime Trilogy Will Be Released, But It Won’t Beat Metroid Dread’s Sales

It’s no surprise why Metroid Dread not also won Best Action/Adventure Game at the Game Awards, but why it has become one of the best-selling games in the entire franchise. With fluid controls, fun combat to fight alien threats, and the Metroidvania level design that gamers know and love, fans and newcomers rejoiced when it was finally released.

But if there was a Metroid Prime trilogy, would it be as successful? According to ThawingThumbs, that would probably not be the case. While they do speculate that the updated ports from the Wii versions will be the best selling out of the Metroid Prime titles, “reviews (will probably) lament the outdated visuals and lack of fixes for problems in the games.” In other words, the games will prove to be too retro to have a chance at matching Metroid Dread‘s success, which was due in part by the game’s improved visuals, better sound design, and other modern updates.

The Persona Collection Will Come to Switch

Since Joker from Persona 5 was revealed as the first of many DLC fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, many wanted to see the star’s game ported to the Switch and take his crime-fighting adventures on the go. And despite the spin-off title Persona 5 Strikers being the only game currently on the system, fans and newcomers want to dive into this franchise.

But according to Reddit user ColesWork, it is probable that a “Greatest Hits Persona package” will be announced at E3 and will “include the first four Persona games in a single $60 collection.” While some think the Switch doesn’t need the Persona games, this package will most likely be released in October with good reviews, but fans will feel disappointed that Persona 5, a popular and massive game that is too big to include in this package, is not included.

The Switch Will Get 3DS Games

While the Wii U didn’t sell well during its short life cycle, its library of fun and varied games slowly made its way to the Switch with its own quality of life and graphical improvements. From Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, gamers have been able to enjoy these titles once again.

It looks like some beloved 3DS games might be getting their Switch treatment too according to DrAwesomeX. Whether these will be full remakes or polished ports, it looks as though Detective Pikachu and Fire Emblem: Echoes will be coming to the beloved console sometime in 2022 and will hopefully gain new fans as well as returning players. Fingers crossed that they come to fruition as they are part of the “supposedly initial plans” of 2022.

A New Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Will Release In March

Pokemon has already released a breadth of games on the Switch with remakes and new installments in the mainline titles from GameFreak. But there have also been a lot of spin-off titles too with New Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Cafe Mix, Pokken Tournament, and Pokemon Unite just to name a few.

The console already had a remake on one of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles, but Clean_Strategy_9533 believes that a new game in this particular series will be out in March. And it will called Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Exploration Team DX.

Splatoon 3 Will Be Released On May 14th, 2022

Due to its competitive gameplay and weird lore, Splatoon 2 was a huge success when it was released in 2017, bringing back fans of the original game as well as inviting new players to the colorful, family-friendly shooter. It was even supported long after its initial release with some new stages and weapons being added occasionally.

The third game in the series will be out exactly on “May 14th, 2022”, at least according to Literalicity. As the second game was out in the summer, it’s no surprise that this prediction would also see it out during the same season. And hopefully not a day too late for this much-anticipated title.

The GameCube Pokémon Titles Will Be Out For The Holidays

It seems as though nearly every Nintendo console generation has been represented on the Switch, with NES, SNES, N64, and Wii U ports and emulators just to name a few. While the closest to a GameCube game on the hybrid system is Super Mario 3D All-Stars (one of the best Mario games) and its inclusion of Super Mario Sunshine, it doesn’t appear that many more will be out anytime soon.

A Reddit user who believes otherwise is Kaibaman94, who believes that remasters of Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness will be released alongside some new features. While they expect to see Pokémon Home implementations, they also want to see “updated mechanics and extra Gen 4-8 shadow Pokemon to collect” in these 3D adventures. With the recent PokémonBrilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl already a hit, it stands to reason these classic Pokémon games will make their way to the Switch.

Silksong Will Finally Be Released

Hollow Knight was a beloved and visually stunning indie video game when it was released in 2017. As well as receiving wide critical praise, it gained a lot of fans looking for a new, challenging game that could live up to the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodbourne.

Silksong is the sequel that anyone who played the original title is longing to play. With a brand new character and gameplay that stays true to the style that made Hollow Knight so entertaining, LordOfPizzas believes that it will finally “release in 2022” as it will be a few years since the original was released. And with fans waiting since 2019, it’s certainly likely gamers will enjoy this new venture soon.

MultiVersus Won’t Be the Smash Bros. Successor

With the success of the mascot beat ’em up Super Smash Bros. series, it was no surprise to see other companies attempt to recreate the same magic. From PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale to Brawlhalla, they just haven’t come close to what Nintendo has been able to do over and over again.

And with MultiVersus released next year with DC superheroes and iconic Warner Brothers and HBO characters to take a crack at it, Birdygamer19 doesn’t see this game doing well. With niche characters and a lack of representation from many genres, they may see this doing better than last year’s Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, but “Nintendo has access to way more genres gamers can latch onto.”

2022 Will Be Like 2017

Out of all the games to be released in 2017 for both the Nintendo Switch and 3DS consoles, five, in particular, stood out for their own reasons. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild saw Link enter the open-world RPG; Mario + Rabbids became the next big thing; Pokemon released their last 3DS games; Splatoon finally released its sequel; and the cute-looking Slime Rancher was out.

And yet according to fans like Luchi281201, “2022 is going to be 2017” and they will be able to relive these experiences once again with their sequels. If the previous titles are anything to go by, it looks like 2022 will have bigger and better follow-ups that Switch owners will relive again at home or on the go.
