10 Actors You Didn’t Know Married Musicians

Two of the biggest types of celebrities are actors and musicians. And while they have very different lanes, so to speak, sometimes, the two types mix. It’s not uncommon for actors to try their hand at making music, and conversely, for musicians to try their hand at acting – sometimes, people are equally talented at both. And sometimes, actors and musicians mingle in the same circles, whether it’s personal groups of friends, awards shows, films, television series, or music videos that involve both.

When things get steamy, however, an actor and a musician might even be romantically linked and end up getting married. There are plenty of known actor-musician married pairs, like Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, Joe Jonas  and Sophie Turner – the list goes on. Here are 10 more cases of actors and musicians who tied the knot.

10 Kate Hudson (Chris Robinson, Matt Bellamy)

Hudson married a musician not once, but twice. Her first husband was Chris Robinson, lead singer of the rock band The Black Crowes. The pair were married in 2000 but split six years later.

In 2010, Hudson, who is known as a queen of rom-coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, began dating another frontman, Matt Bellamy of Muse. They were together for four years, through to 2014. She is currently dating Danny Fujikawa, who is not only a musician but also an actor and co-owner of a record company; though the pair have not yet officially gotten married.

9 Valerie Bertinelli (Eddie Van Halen)

Sadly, Eddie Van Halen, main guitarist and songwriter of the rock band Van Halen, passed away in October 2020 at the age of 65. And while they were no longer married for some time, he was married to Bertinelli for more than 25 years.

The One Day at a Time actor (from the original ’70s version, not the reboot) married the rock star in 1981. They separated in 2001, though they didn’t officially divorce until 2007.

8 Katherine Heigl (Josh Kelley)

Heigl got engaged to Josh Kelley in 2006, a singer-songwriter who has had four singles on the Top 40 charts, including “Amazing” and “Only You.” He is currently a country music artist.

Known for her role as Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy, Heigl met Kelley on the set for his music video and they got married in 2007. They have now adopted two children together, and in 2016, Heigl gave birth to their first biological child. Kelley’s brother Charles, Heigl’s brother-in-law, is also a country music artist: he’s a member of the country music group Lady A.

7 Carey Mulligan (Marcus Mumford)

The English actor is married to Marcus Mumford, lead singer of the British folk-rock band Mumford & Sons. It’s a sweet story that would make a great movie: the two were pen pals as children who lost touch with one another, only to reconnect as adults and fall in love.

They were both involved in the movie Inside Llewyn David and got married a few weeks later. They have two children together. Mulligan is, of course, best known for roles in films like An Education, Collateral, and The Great Gatsby.

6 Zooey Deschanel (Ben Gibbard)

Deschanel is one of those actors who is also a singer-songwriter, often singing in many of her films and series, like Elf and New Girl, the latter of which had several musical scenes. She has also performed in a jazz cabaret and released albums of her own.

Her ex-husband is focused solely on music, however, as lead vocalist for the alternative rock band Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. They married in 2009 and divorced in 2012. She is currently dating Jonathan Scott of the Property Brothers, and while he isn’t a musician, they ironically met while filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series.

5 Andy Samberg (Joanna Newsom)

Samberg is pretty musical himself, known for his parody boy band The Lonely Island and their hilarious music videos on sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, and penning songs like “Everything is Awesome” for The Lego Movie. But he’s an actor first, best known today for his leading role on the successful sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

His wife, however, is a musician through-and-through, who plays multiple instruments as well as sings and writes songs. A classically trained harpist, she was once keyboardist for the Indie band The Pleased. Meeting at one of her concerts, Samberg has said he is a “superfan” of her work. They have been married since 2013 and have one child together.

4 Liv Tyler (Royston Langdon)

Daughter of rock legend Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, it comes as no surprise that Tyler found herself drawn to musicians. A singer herself as well as model and producer, her primary career is as an actor with roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy films and series like Harlots and, most recently, 9-1-1: Lone Star.

In 2001, she dated British musician Royston Langdon, who played bass and sang vocals for the glam rock band Spacehog under the stage name Ray Sprinkles. They announced their separation, however, in 2008.

3 Alicia Silverstone (Christopher Jarecki)

Silverstone is an icon of the ’90s and a teen idol, known for her leading role in the movie Clueless. But her acting roots were in music when she first got noticed for appearing in the music video for the Aerosmith song “Cryin’.”

She dated Christopher Jarecki for some time before they officially tied the knot in 2005 and the couple remained together through to 2018. Jarecki was the singer of the political noise-punk band S.T.U.N., which toured with Jane’s Addiction, Marilyn Manson, and other well-known musicians.

2 Daryl Hannah (Neil Young)

While everyone knows actor Daryl Hannah and musician Neil Young, many don’t realize that the two actually married one another. In 2018, the veteran actor, known for her roles in movies like Splash, Roxanne, and Kill Bill, married veteran musician Neil Young after dating for four years.

Young isn’t the first musician Hannah has been involved with: she was previously in a long-term relationship with Jackson Browne. Hannah and Young reportedly bonded over their mutual interest in activism and passion for the environment.

1 Michelle Williams (Phil Elverum)

When looking beyond her wildly successful career, which began with a role on Dawson’s Creek and blossomed to include multiple award-winning and nominated roles in movies like Brokeback Mountain and Manchester by the Sea, and series like Fosse-Verdon, many just associate Williams’ personal life with her relationship with the late Heath Ledger.

But the actor was also once married to a musician before pairing up with her current husband, theater director Thomas Kail. From 2018 to 2019, she was married to Phil Elverum, a songwriter, producer, and visual artist known for The Microphones and Mount Eerie.
