Anime that fall under the “isekai” genre — a plot that involves the protagonist being transported or reborn into a new world that usually features magic and mystical creatures — have become more and more common to the point their narratives often seem trite and recycled. However, the series that fall into overusing tropes associated with the genre ultimately create a stage for novel anime to shine even brighter.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation stands out through its focus on the darker or more uncomfortable elements of being reincarnated with memories of a previous life. Protagonist Rudeus Greyrat, an intelligent (and perverted) boy with a proclivity for powerful magic, was a 34-year-old Japanese man who became a recluse after years of bullying in school in his previous life. While waiting for a potential season two, fans might be interested in learning more about Rudeus’s voice actress, Yumi Uchiyama, and her roles in other anime.

10 Genshiken: Mirei Yajima

Following a club of idiosyncratic college students and their various interests that classify them as “otaku,” extreme fans of entertainment and its associated culture such as manga or video games, Genshiken succeeds in simultaneously displaying eccentric behavior with comedy and heartfelt understanding.

Mirei Yajima is a new member of the otaku club — officially known as “The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture” — but quickly fits in with her clubmates due to their shared interest in the genre known as “Boys’ Love.”

9 The Asterisk War: Irene Urzaiz

Taking place on an Earth radically altered by a disaster known as the “Inverta,” the world’s national powers have ebbed and reconsolidated primarily under the conglomerate Integrated Enterprise Foundation. Resulting from the Inverta, a portion of the population has given birth to an evolved form of human — the Genestellar.

The Genestellar attend elite academies in the city of Asterisk to train their powers and fight in competitions. Irene Urzaiz is a foul-tempered student entangled in the political landscape at Rewolf Black Institute who has gained vampiric and gravitational magic from her empowered scythe. Although quick to anger and volatile, Urzaiz’s aggressive behavior and dubious actions partially stem from her desire to protect her younger sister, Priscilla.

8 The Irregular At Magic High School: Erika Chiba

In an alternate history that saw magic introduced in the late ’90s and global war in the middle of the 21st century, The Irregular at Magic High School details not only the individual power of magical abilities but their role in shaping a completely new society. As one of the world powers, Japan’s elite schools for magic are designated by numbers and prepare new generations for combat and political power positions.

Erika Chiba is the illegitimate child of one of Japan’s most powerful families; her childhood was dominated by an overwhelming sense of isolation and displacement. 7 Overlord: Mare Bello Fiore

Overlord follows the exploits of Ainz Ooal Gown, a legendary high-level player in an MMORPG, as his life in the game becomes mysteriously becomes his new reality. Now living in a world that mirrors the game YGGDRASIL in many ways, Ainz finds the NPCs created to protect his guild’s base are now sentient creatures and his primary companions.

Mare Bello Fiore is the younger twin brother of Aura Bella and together they are responsible for defending the guild’s sixth floor. Mare is sensitive and timid, with an interest in reading and relaxing rather than fighting. Despite his reserved and hesitant nature, Mare is deeply loyal to Ainz and obeys his commands — often as a subordinate of his sister — without real reservation.

6 Plastic Nee-san: Hazuki Okamoto

Detailing the antics of a high school model-building club, Plastic Nee-san crams laugh-out-loud comedy into its two-minute episodes. Despite the short runtime, the anime’s characters are incredibly entertaining and endearing, which is further accentuated by the animation style — an aesthetic that dizzily shifts from moe, to chibi, to the highly detailed and grotesque, for the sake of humor.

Hazuki Okamoto, often referred to as “Okappa,” appears to be the most mellow member of the club, but actually possesses an intensely violent streak that is coupled with her seemingly superhuman physicality.

5 Re;Zero – Starting Life In Another World: Puck

Homing in on gaming elements such as “save points” and “game overs,” Re;Zero – Starting Life in Another World imagines what these mechanics would be like as magical powers—and the results are horrifying. Protagonist Natsuki Subaru is transported from Japan to a fantasy world full of magic, monsters, and often painful death.

Dying and resetting back to specific save points, Subaru is forced to overcome his anxieties and anguish in order to help his friends. Puck appears to be a tiny cat familiar in Emilia’s service, capable of protecting her with ice magic. In reality, Puck is a powerful spirit that is the master of fire mana. In timelines where Emilia dies, he is shown to transform into a massive beast bent on destroying the world to avenge his fallen ward.

Fuu Inuboukazi is the president of the Hero Club and is responsible for distributing the phone app that allows the girls to enter their “Hero” forms. As a big sister, Inuboukazi adopts this familial role in her relationships with the other girls, looking after them with her forward and energetic personality and protecting her loved ones with a massive greatsword.

3 Nisekoi: Ruri Miyamoto

Nisekoi inserts the “enemy-to-lovers” trope into a high school setting with deft comedy and touching character development. Despite their mutually disliking one another, Raku Ichijo and Chitoge Kirisaki are forced to maintain a false relationship, as they are both the children of feuding gangs that reach a tentative peace by pairing their respective heirs together.

Hilarity ensues as the two attempt to deceive their families and friends to varying degrees of success, all while Ichijo possesses genuine feelings for the kind Kosaki Onodera. Ruri Miyamoto is Onodera’s outspoken and empathetic best friend who realizes Onodera has feelings for Ichijo. She spends much of the series encouraging Onodera’s feelings and conceiving scenarios in which her friend might confess her love.

2 Fire Force: Arrow

Fire Force is a shounen-battle anime that pits supernatural fires against firefighters who possess pyrokinetic abilities. As the populace faces the enigmatic risk of Spontaneous Human Combustion, an occurrence that sees a person burst into flames and indiscriminately attack their surroundings, firefighters capable of harnessing the power of fire have steadily emerged through subsequent generations.

1 Good Luck Girl!: Momiji Binboda

Absorbing the fortune of those around her and generating a sphere of incredible prosperity, Ichiko Sakura, the titular Good Luck Girl!, is inadvertently shifting reality’s balance to heavily favor her life in all aspects. While comedic in the way her problems effectively automatically resolve and the mild misfortune of the people surrounding her, the larger ramifications of Sakura’s monopoly on luck are far-reaching and potentially catastrophic.

Rising to the challenge of restoring order, the god of misfortune, Momiji Binboda, aligns herself against Sakura in a battle to drain the latter of her excess of good fortune.
