One of the most appealing aspects of the game franchise that has stayed close to the hearts of fans for over 25 years is the actual design of the Pokémon. Powerful or weak, monstrous or adorable, the Pokémon world has it all. And their color is sometimes the foundation of these designs.

Since blue is often the color of Water and Ice types, they are prevalent among the best blue Pokémon, but there are exceptions. Ranker users have voted on their favorite blue Pokémon, with hundreds of fan votes coming in to come to the right conclusion about which cool-hued pocket monsters are the greatest of all.

10 Articuno

One of the three legendary birds of Kanto, Articuno was one of the first Legendary Pokémon obtainable for fans. The dungeon puzzles involved in order to catch the Legendary birds in generation 1 were the template for Legendary Pokémon battles for years to come, in particular for those that weren’t a part of the main storylines.

Articuno was also featured in the movie Pokémon The Movie 2000 alongside the other birds in one of the more thrilling and action-packed Pokémon adventures, as well as in Pokemon: Battle Frontier where Frontier Brain Noland’s captured Articuno battled Ash’s Charizard.

9 Glaceon

Evolved forms of Eevee are generally popular, and Glaceon was no exception. The generation 4 additions were as beloved as the original trio, and the task of obtaining a Glaceon was on the minds of many trainers in their adventures in Diamond & Pearl and their remakes in 2021.

Glaceon has many brief appearances in the anime, most noticeably as a member of May’s team in her return during the Diamond & Pearl run. A more prominent role could’ve been fun for the mon, as it was relatively unexplored.

8 Salamence

Pseudo Legendary Pokémon are among the best designed Pokémon in each generation, and it’s rare that a team will persist without a Garchomp or Tyranitar, or in the Hoenn region, a Salamence. Like Glaceon in generation 4, catching a Bagon in generation 3 was a late-game endeavor, so reserving a spot for the powerful dragon type can be difficult.

Salamence had a significant supporting role in the film Pokemon: Jirachi – Wish Maker as well as being the premier member of Drake’s elite four lineup. Drake’s Salamence is one of the strongest opponents, with a range of different movetype attacks.

7 Luxray

When exiting Sandgem town with the first set of Poké Balls in a generation 4 game or remake, only a few Pokémon are available, including Shinx. Though it may not seem useful for the first couple of gym leaders, holding onto and training Shinx to evolve it into Luxray is worth the wait.

Luxray is one of the most well-designed Pokémon and most powerful Electric types in the game. The mon is particularly useful against Crasher Wake’s Gyrados which is very powerful, and its combined type of Water/Flying makes it very difficult otherwise, making Luxray a key component to a Sinnoh team.

6 Greninja

The generation 6 Water-type starter made a major splash in the Pokémon community, and became one of the most popular starter picks. Greninja simply looks awesome, and is awesome, even earning itself a spot in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Not many Pokémon can say that.

A Water type can make many of the gyms in X & Y difficult, as there are very few opponents weak to the type, but for fans that prefer style over efficiency, Greninja is a lock-in choice.

5 Blastoise

Being on the cover of one of the first two Pokémon games ever solidifies Blastoise as one of the greats. After 25 years, and no matter how popular Charizard gets, picking a started in Red, Blue or any of the remakes will be a toss-up.

Fans of the original Pokémon anime runs will remember the Blastoise evolution lineup well, with the Squirtle Squad, and the legendary rivalry between Gary’s Blastoise and Ash’s Charizard, exploding in their epic battle in the Orange Island’s tournament.

4 Suicune

Legendary Pokémon are often mystical, but Suicune is one of the few that simply by design truly feels like a majestic, mythological sighting. Catching a Suicune in Pokémon Crystal was a major achievement, as well as in the generation 4 games, when the legendary Johto beasts would roam the lands of Sinnoh.

Suicune also made an imprint on fans in Pokémon 4Ever, as watching Ash mount and ride the legendary dog was a truly epic experience. Suicune’s design feels like something out of a Studio Ghibli film, heavily inspired by Japanese Mythology.

3 Gyrados

Like with Charizard, Gyrados is a non-Dragon type dragon, which probably should be a Dragon type. But alas, the lake dragon is still one of the most monstrous and iconic Pokémon of all. Its method of evolution is perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the mon, as the almost useless Magikarp only needs to reach level 20 to become the titan, Gyrados.

Gyrados filled the early anime series with many memories, including the red Gyrados which was caught by Lance. The storyline is an essential part of the Gold & Silver games and their remakes, and Gyrados was also one of Misty’s most powerful Pokémon in the series.

2 Lapras

One of the most elegant Pokémon, Lapras is known less so for being a formidable fighter, and more for its helpful form of transport. The idea of traveling the seas with a trusty Pokémon is so enticing that Lapras became noted specifically alongside the travel move, surf.

Lapras carrying around Ash and his team in the Orange Islands became an iconic look, and many adventurers seek to have one on their team to imitate the idea. Lapras can also be a solid combatant for a lineup in the games.

1 Lucario

The fighting and steel combination of Lucario made for quite the iconic Pokémon, even in a game generation loaded with great designs. Lucario is not only one of the best Pokémon in generation 4, but one of the best Pokémon all around.

The film Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew solidified Lucario’s level-headed, lone wolf personality as being one of the most desirable team members in the game. Like with many powerful Pokémon, Lucario can’t be caught, and must be hatched and evolved from an egg gifted to the player throughout the games.
