The Kingsman series has been a fan favorite since its creation in 2014. Known for its elegant style and quick-witted characters, many fans have come to love Eggsy, Harry, and the whole crew. Both of the original films earned over $100 million in the domestic box office and did quite well globally.

Founded by a group of “powerful men with a desire to preserve peace and protect life,” they have done some memorable things like saving the world from dictators, drug networks, and terrorists all while looking good. The self-aware spy-action franchise has made a lot of references to real historical events but always makes sure to give it its own spin. This unique style is never more evident than in the writing with tons of interesting dialogue and clever one-liners.

The Shepherd’s Clever Adage

“Trust Is Having Confidence In The Honesty Of Others.”

The third and newest movie of the franchise, The King’s Man, continued its tradition of clever writing and featured some memorable one-liners like this one that the antagonist, known as the Shepherd, says to his peers before sending them off to do his bidding.

This quote is one of those sayings that makes perfect sense, but most people don’t think about it this way. Trust is something people see as something that needs to be earned and can be destroyed, which is entirely true. However, having confidence in something is just as much the responsibility of the person exhibiting it as the person receiving it. Someone can do something to break one’s trust, but whether that person remains to have the confidence or not is up to each individual. This was certainly a clever way to reiterate something people already know in a new way.

Eggsy’s Self-Aware Remark

“Hi, Babe. Uh, Bit Of A Nightmare. I’ve Got To Sleep With A Target, But I Won’t Do It Unless You Agree It’s Alright.” / “What Was I? Target Practice?”

One thing the Kingsman series does a good job of is never taking itself too seriously. This is usually evidenced by the outrageous and over-the-top ways people die in these movies but sometimes is shown through the writing.

In this scene, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is on a mission to plant a location-tracking device on a target by inserting it inside them without them knowing. Of course, the target is an attractive woman, but Eggsy being the loyal man and agent that he is feels compelled to ask his girlfriend if it’s alright rather than justifying his behavior by calling it his duty. It calls out the ridiculous nature of the conversation while staying focused on the fact that he is actually in the middle of a dangerous and secret mission.

Harry’s Funny One-Liner

“The World Is Changing. There’s A Reason Why Aristocrats Develop Weak Chins.”

At the beginning of the first movie, it is clear that the world is changing and the Kingsman is slightly behind the times. The line references inbreeding in an effort to change Arthur’s mind that is subtle, but undoubtedly funny.

Gallahad, aka Harry Hart, makes his case for updating the way they do things by making this joking comment towards Arthur to poke fun at the spy genre as well as illustrate that it might be time for them to consider recruiting new agents outside of their normal “high-born” background. Arthur objected to the idea at first, but this comment paints a funny, but not so flattering picture of why it is time to change.

Emily On Always Doing The Right Thing

“That’s Why We’re Patrons Of The Red Cross. We Don’t Hide Behind Our Status.”

One theme that has remained consistent throughout the Kingsman series is the idea of putting the greater good above oneself. This is proved time and again when the Kingsman agents thrust themselves into dangerous situations in order to protect the greater good.

In The King’s Man, the Duke of Oxford’s wife, Emily (Alexandra Maria Lara), says this to their son, Conrad (Harris Dickinson), to explain that even though they are a very wealthy family and have no ties to the war, that doesn’t mean they should do nothing. Oxford (Ralph Fiennes) eludes to this several times throughout the film that they must put life and peace over themselves. It is a lesson that Oxford wishes more people would learn.

Harry Repurposing Famous Quotes

“There Is Nothing Noble In Being Superior To Your Fellow Man. True Nobility Comes In Being Superior To Your Former Self.”

One quality all of the Kingsman agents have is humility. It is a trait they pass on to every new member they recruit and make sure to practice every chance they get.

This is something they all believe as Harry is imparting this famous quote on Eggsy before he begins his training. Eggsy is new to the world of the Kingsman and doesn’t know what it means to be a gentleman yet. He still believes it is just about the way he talks and dresses, but Harry uses this quote to communicate to him that it is about much more than that.

Harry’s Slightly Off-Topic Dialogue

“If I Save The World, Can I Have Two Tickets To Your Next Concert?”

As mentioned before, director Matthew Vaughn and the Kingsman series are not afraid to make light of what is going on at any moment. One gag in Kingsman: The Golden Circle is that Elton John, played by himself, is kidnapped and forced to perform at Poppy’s (Julianne Moore) whim.

During the final fight scene, Harry runs into a captive Elton and can’t pass up the opportunity to ask him for a favor. Just as Eggsy did with Princess Tilde in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Harry decides to take advantage of the situation. In a Looney Tunes-esque moment, Harry stops pursuing the bad guys in order to ask Elton for tickets to his next show, to which Elton replies that he can have backstage passes. It is moments like this that make the Kingsman series a perfect spy movie parody and well-liked among fans.

Polly’s Sage Advice

“The More You Fear Something, The More Likely It Is To Come True.”

With no shortage of wise words, this line rang out for fans of all kinds but especially parents. Family is a common theme throughout the films and that continued to be the case in The King’s Man.

After living through a war and witnessing his wife’s murder, Oxford decides to shield Conrad from the world for as long as he can. Being around so much death has made him wary and frightful for the fate of his son. But as Polly (Gemma Arterton) points out, the more you worry, the more likely it will happen. These are the words she uses to open Oxford’s eyes before he drives Conrad to do something foolish that will ultimately get him killed. Good thing she was able to talk some sense to him…

Harry’s Funny, Yet Biting Remarks

“I’m A Catholic Whore Currently Enjoying Congress Out Of Wedlock With My Black Jewish Boyfriend Who Works At A Military Abortion Clinic. So Hail Satan, And Have A Lovely Afternoon, Madam.”

One of the more iconic lines from the series shows Harry shocking a hateful church patron in the most Kingsman way possible in order to escape his current situation.

Harry is in the South Glades Mission Church trying to blend in and spy on Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) to see if he is connected to the hate group or not when he gets a bad feeling and decides to leave. One of the patrons presses him to know why he is leaving, so Harry calmly and respectfully says what he knows will throw her off long enough for him to slip out. This line sets the stage for one crazy fight scene that incorporates more than some fans know, as is typical for Kingsman. This line is hilarious given the proper context and is a prime example of the type of writing that got the Kingsman into the hearts of fans everywhere.

Harry’s Insightful Words

“Just Know That Having Something To Lose Is What Makes Life Worth Living.”

The franchise has its share of touching moments and this is definitely one of them. As previously mentioned, family is a common theme. This line is set up with that theme in mind.

Harry is talking to Eggsy about his life and the lack of attachments and meaningful connections he’s made. While they make him a great agent, it leaves him feeling empty in a rare reflective moment for the likable character. Harry looks back on his life and realizes he has nothing to live for anymore other than the cause. Realizing how awful it is, he shares with Eggsy the importance of having loved ones and how they give you something to live for. This is just another example of how the Kingsman series is chock-full of life lessons and important sayings.

Oxford Imparting Wisdom

“Reputation is what people think of you, character is what you are.”

It seems the father-son relationship is especially highlighted throughout the series. The audience sees it repeatedly between Harry and Eggsy and it continues between Oxford and Conrad. While only one of these pairs is an actual father and son, the sentiments are the same.

Oxford pays extra attention to Conrad throughout the movie, making sure he is safe and well. He constantly bombards him with snippets of information and wise words to help turn him into a gentleman and outstanding young man. This line he says to Conrad is perfectly in line with the Kingsman brand but is also valuable advice that anyone can take and consider.
