10 Best Movies Like Hulu’s Sex Appeal

With the arrival of Hulu’s new raunchy teen sex comedy, Sex Appeal, on the horizon, there are still a couple of days before it launches on the streaming platform. It follows the story of a high schooler who analyzes the best ways to have sex by gathering information, some of which is proven when she engages in sexual activity with her friend, Larson.

While many audiences will be thrilled by the trailer, waiting that long can be difficult. To ease these teen drama and light-hearted film cravings, there are many other movies that are already out there that will satisfy that same itch. Hopefully, with these features on hand, the wait won’t be so terrible.

The Voyeurs (2021)

The Voyeurs, which stars Sidney Sweeney and proves how good she is in any role, is a story about a couple who realize a couple in an apartment across their street like to leave their curtains open and be watched in the act.

The cinematography uses the frame within a frame technique to make every shot feel like the audience is peeking in on a private moment. While this film is more of an adult thriller than a comedy, the sexual tension that develops between this couple and their neighbors will definitely keep viewers engaged.

Friends With Benefits (2011)

Friends With Benefits is the classic tale of friends who think that sex won’t change their platonic feelings toward one another until it inevitably does. This film features Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as the leads and it has a cute rom-com ending.

Though this isn’t a teen movie, it captures this odd space of trying to distance emotionally while becoming more and more intimate. Just like in Sex Appeal, these characters have a difficult time separating love from their physical and emotional bonds.

Easy A (2010)

2010’s Easy A is a story about a high schooler named Olive who lies about having sex with her gay friend and, when rumors spread, she becomes known as the easiest girl in school. In the end, she finds a guy who sees past these lies and she gives up her façade of being a cool girl with experience.

Emma Stone plays this role of a confused and sexually frustrated teen extremely well. Like Sex Appeal,  this movie centers on the exploits of teens and their complicated and wildly varying sex lives. It also has Stanley Tucci, which is praise enough.

Blockers (2018)

Blockers is a teen comedy that follows a group of kids who all plan to lose their virginities at prom and their protective parents who will do anything to stop this from happening.

Not only does this cast feature Leslie Mann in one of her most iconic roles yet, but it’s a genuinely funny movie about sex that both parents and teenagers will find relatable and hilarious. Like Sex Appeal, the main characters of Blockers strive to create positive sexual experiences for themselves.

Lady Bird (2017)

The already iconic Lady Bird is undoubtedly one of Greta Gerwig’s best films and follows a teenage girl who goes through her senior year of high school and tries to better understand herself and what she wants.

Though this story is heavily focused on the bond between the mother and daughter, Lady Bird gains and learns from the embarrassing sexual moments in this film. It’s fair to say her less-than-perfect sex scene with Timothée Chalamet is one of the most memorable scenes of the movie.

The Perfect Date (2019)

The Perfect Date is about a high school guy, Brooks, who decides to make an app where people can pay him to be a rent-a-date guy so he can pay for his college. When he falls in love with a girl, his job becomes much more difficult to perform.

Again, like Sex Appeal, this movie focuses on teens and their relationship with sex, love and romance. Though this film stays more PG-13, the implications of Brooks’ dating app is a way that he can isolate himself from finding a genuine connection. Luckily, he and Celia still find their spark.

The F**k It List (2019)

The F**k It List follows a high school student, Brett, who shares a list of things he would have done differently after a prank blows up in his face and practically destroys his life.

The film features a romance between Brett and his friend, Kayla, as they both realize what they want and must combat the expectations of the adults around them. This coming-of-age rom-com tackles this idea that is also prevalent in Sex Appeal, which is that love and professional success take time and practice.

Booksmart (2019)

Booksmart is one of the best films of 2019. It’s about teenagers growing up and realizing high school is not the be-all end-all, but it is emotional when it ends. Friends Amy and Molly go from party to party, searching for their crushes and getting into all kinds of shenanigans.

One of the scenes in Booksmart that is most reminiscent of Sex Appeal is when Amy has her first hook up and royally messes it up. Obviously, it takes a while to learn how to be comfortable in sexual situations, but this film depicts it in a relatable and realistic fashion that will remind most audiences of how awkward these first times can be.

The Duff (2015)

Based on a book of the same name, The DUFF follows a girl who finds out that people consider her the ugly friend of her group and that’s why no guy has ever liked her. When a jock offers to help make her over if she helps him get his grades up, she accepts it and romance ensues.

This story is also another friends-to-lovers tale that takes a look at the criticism that teenage girls face in high school over the smallest insecurities. Though it may be a little hyperbolic in its depiction of mean girls and a little on the nose with it’s message, it’s a great film for fans of teen rom-coms that are about two unlikely friends becoming an unlikely couple.

Plan B (2021)

2021’s Plan B, which also has many movies like it, is another recent Hulu film that follows friends Lupe and Sunny as they travel to a different state to purchase the pill that is unavailable to them in their state because they are under the age of 18.

This movie brings to light some important topics like birth control and female reproductive rights all while delivering a truthfully funny story. This teen drama is most likely the best option for audiences waiting for Sex Appeal because it’s on the same platform and it destigmatizes teen sex in a nuanced way.
