The best of Disney’s non-royal couples built their relationships on unconditional love. Even though Disney’s royal couples can overshadow them, non-royal couples like Meg and Hercules, Carl and Ellie, and others have enough values that they can stand out on their own. They don’t have weddings like Ariel and Eric’s, or kingdoms like Kristoff and Anna’s, but how they support and fight for one another makes them just as important.

Though it’s not always easy, Disney’s non-royal couples are consistently supportive. The way characters want what’s best for the other in the relationship, even if it means they don’t get what they want, shows the emotional maturity the couples have reached. Their individuality puts them at the top, even if not all of them match the royal couples’ popularity.

10 Sally & Lightning McQueen (Cars)

Sally and Lightning McQueen from Cars are one of Pixar’s best couples because they support each other’s dreams. Sally cheered for Lightning’s races, and Lightning brought more attention to Radiator Springs like she wanted. They listened to each other’s dreams and helped the other achieve them, making their relationship strong.

A highlight of Sally and Lightning’s relationship is when Lightning learns of Sally’s past in Los Angeles. It was here that Lightning started to see the bigger picture, as before, he was fixated on leaving Radiator Springs and getting back to racing. Learning more about Sally and her passion made Lightning more empathetic, giving him something to work towards other than racing.

9 Sergeant Calhoun & Fix-It Felix Jr. (Wreck-It Ralph)

Throughout Wreck-It Ralph, Fix-It Felix and Sergeant Calhoun showed each other that they were similar in many aspects. Felix was assertive when he insisted on joining Calhoun, proving that he could match Calhoun’s determination. Calhoun matched Felix’s compassion when she fought for the safety of the arcade, including Vanellope.

Calhoun and Felix became more comfortable around each other, allowing them to further display their personalities. They supported each other on their journeys, but gave space when they needed it, like when Calhoun was reminded of her past husband and needed to be alone. They practiced boundaries, protected one another, and nurtured a lasting, healthy relationship.

6 David & Nani (Lilo And Stitch)

David and Nani from Lilo and Stitch founded their relationship on mutual respect. They respected each other’s wishes, but still remained close.

Their relationship stayed strong because of David not allowing his personal affection to get the better of him. Though he wanted to be a couple with Nani, he wanted her happiness even more. He helped her take care of both Lilo and Stitch, and was accepting of all the responsibilities that came with being with her. 5 Mr. & Mrs. Incredible (The Incredibles)

The Incredibles offers several lovable duos from Pixar, including Mr. and Mrs. Incredible. Both of them cheered and hoped for the other’s success, even if it didn’t mean the best things for themselves. When Mrs. Incredible got the superhero job Mr. Incredible wanted, he still cheered her on. He was hurt he didn’t get it but happy for her nonetheless, showing that relationships aren’t just about one person.

Their relationship also worked because they didn’t agree on everything all the time. They had different opinions and explosive arguments, like when they disagreed on superheroes still fighting in the city. However, they learned to listen to each other and be honest. Mr. and Mrs. Incredible’s relationship can be hard, but them withstanding that and coming out on top make it one of the best.

Numerous relationships in Hercules are built upon sacrifice, and that isn’t an exception for Hercules and Meg. Their love has led them to make great sacrifices, like Meg giving her life to save Hercules, and Hercules giving up his immortality to be with her. Not many couples are willing to make sacrifices, let alone to this extent. Because these two wouldn’t have made these sacrifices for just anybody, it demonstrates how powerful their love is.

Their relationship is also one of the best because it allows space for healing. Meg was already hesitant to love as she was burned before. Being with Hercules allowed her to heal from her past. Although there was still the risk of becoming heartbroken, she took the leap anyway. She overcame her fears and found true love, becoming an everlasting couple with Hercules.

3 Woody & Bo Peep (Toy Story)

The relationship also shows how much couples can learn about themselves. When Woody chose to be with Bo Peep, he put himself first, finally finding his purpose. When Bo Peep chose to be with him, she learned that she still liked helping other toys, also finding her purpose. Their relationship is not only about helping themselves grow, but also helping those around them.

2 Carl & Ellie (Up)
