NHL 21 offers gamers the chance to customize their online player builds with Traits and Specialties in the World of CHEL. Players can use these perks to gain an in-game advantage, and selected perks can help round out the weaknesses in a loadout or emphasize its strengths.

Specialties can boost a player’s abilities in specific situations, while Traits come in one of two versions. They can even raise certain attributes while lowering others, depending on which version is selected. For wingers, they will want perks that help them shoot, puck handle, and pass, making them the main drivers of the offense. But which ones are the best?

10 Heavy Wrister 2

This perk will increase the player’s “Wrist Shot Accuracy” and “Wrist Shot Power” by 2 and 4 points. It will also decrease the player’s “Acceleration” and “Endurance” by 2 and 4 points.

“Heavy Wrister” will allow the user to shoot wrist shots with more accuracy and power. Aside from the Sniper build, other builds typically won’t have the shooting attributes to beat a goalie with a clean shot. This perk will maximize the speed at which the puck gets to the target, helping the players score those close-calls.

9 Sharp Shooter 1

This perk will increase the player’s “Wrist Shot Accuracy” and “Wrist Shot Power” by 4 and 2 points. It will also decrease the player’s “Speed” and “Balance” by 2 points each.

“Sharp Shooter” will allow the user to shoot wrist shots with more accuracy and power. This Trait increases “Wrist Shot Accuracy” more than any other perk in the game. For Snipers who want to max their “Wrist Shot” attributes, this Trait can be combined along with “Heavy Wrister” to achieve a staggering “95 Wrist Shot Accuracy” and “96 Wrist Shot Power.” As the name would imply, this perk is a great pick-up for sharpshooters.

8 Target Slapper 2

This perk will increase the player’s “Slap Shot Accuracy” and “Slap Shot Power” by 4 and 2 points. It will also decrease the player’s “Defensive Awareness” by 4 points.

“Target Slapper” will allow the user to shoot slap shots with more accuracy and power. While wingers will typically utilize wrist shots and snap shots, slap shots are a crucial weapon in a goal-scorer’s arsenal. The power of the slap shot will likely suffice, but what is gained in power is lost in accuracy compared to other shots. This Trait will give gamers the Alex Ovechkin-like cannon of a one-timer they desire.

7 Dirty Dangles 2

This perk will increase the player’s “Puck Control” and “Deking” by 2 and 5 points. It will also decrease the player’s “Speed” and “Balance” by 2 points each.

“Dirty Dangles” will allow the user to more effectively perform any of the game’s many deke moves, from windmills dekes to loose-puck dekes. The most fun teams to play as in NHL 21 usually have, at least, one McDavid-type winger who can reliably get by their man at the offensive blue-line. “Dangler” builds can use this Trait to get their “Deking” to a maximum of 95, while “Playmakers” can use it to get their “Deking” to 88, making them viable a threat to pass or deke.

6 Offensive Minded 2

This perk will increase the player’s “Wrist Shot Accuracy,” “Wrist Shot Power,” and “Offensive Awareness” by 2 points each. It will also decrease the player’s “Body Checking” and “Stick Checking” by 2 and 4 points.

“Offensive Minded” will allow the user to shoot wrist shots more effectively, while also benefitting from the boost to their “Offensive Awareness.” While the exact tangible benefits of the “Offensive Awareness” attribute have been the subject of much debate among the fans of the series, it’s generally agreed that it aids in just about every offensive action. The detriment to the player’s “Body Checking” and “Stick Checking” will likely be a non-factor for many wingers, as builds like Snipers, Danglers, and Playmakers won’t be reliable defensively either way.

5 Deflector 2

This perk will increase the player’s “Hand-Eye” and “Offensive Awareness” by 5 and 3 points. It will also decrease the player’s “Balance” and “Durability” by 2 and 4 points.

“Deflector” will allow the user to deflect shots from their teammates on the way to the opposing team’s net more effectively. Deflections are one of the toughest shots for even the best goalies in the NHL and can turn any shot into a dangerous scoring opportunity. Aside from “Grinders,” most forward builds don’t have a high enough “Hand-Eye” to reliable get their stick on shots. This Trait will allow wingers to be involved in more of the all-important “garbage goals.”

4 Precise Passing 2

This perk will increase the player’s “Passing” and “Offensive Awareness” by 5 and 3 points. It will also decrease the player’s “Wrist Shot Power” and “Balance” by 5 and 4 points.

“Precise Passing” will allow the user to pass the puck with more speed and accuracy. This will give gamers the ability to attempt and complete riskier or more difficult passes, or simply deliver safe passes more quickly. As the only Trait that increases the “Passing” attribute, this can help round out non-Playmaker builds or help Playmakers achieve a maximum Passing stat of 95. This is also a great pickup for Power Forwards who want to be a “Jumbo” Joe Thornton type of forward.

3 Breakaway Magician

This Specialty will increase the player’s shooting and puck handling attributes while on a breakaway or a penalty shot. Wingers are often expected to lead the break-out, making them the most likely position to find themselves on a breakaway.

Playmakers, Danglers, and Snipers all have exceptional skating attributes, and with the aid of good break-out passes from the defense, may have multiple breakaway attempts per game. This is a great perk that provides a boost to the most important attributes needed to finish on a breakaway.

2 Medic

This Specialty will decrease the likelihood that the player incurs an injury from taking a big hit from the opposing team or from blocking a shot., as well as allowing the player to recover from injuries more quickly. Wingers will likely want to pick the more vulnerable builds, making this an important perk.

Unless a player would prefer their winger to use one of the bigger forward builds (Enforcer, Grinder, Power Forward), “Medic” can be an invaluable addition to their loadout. One big hit or blocked shot can severely reduce many of a winger’s most important attributes if they suffer an injury. Over the course of just one game, being injured for up to a period and a half can be a huge detriment to the whole team.

1 Quick Release

This Specialty will increase the player’s “Wrist Shot Power” while performing a snapshot. Wingers will often find themselves shooting the puck from within 5-15 feet of the net; an ideal distance for a quick snap shot.

While any forward position or build would benefit from this perk, its main value is in providing an even better “Wrist Shot Power” to “Snipers” who have maxed out their “Wrist Shot” attributes with Traits. Fully investing in a Sniper build with a loadout dedicated to maximizing their Wrist Shots can give gamers a truly fearsome wrister, making them one of the best NHL players to have on the team.
