After Army of Darknesswas released in 1992, fans had been waiting for a fourth Evil Deadfilm. Fans were treated to an Evil Dead reboot in 2013 from Fede Alvarez, but Bruce Campbell didn’t return as Ash Williams (except for a post-credits scene).

Fans finally got more Evil Dead from Campbell and Sam Raimi when Ash vs Evil Deadpremiered on Starz on October 31, 2015. The show did very well with fans and critics, but due to poor ratings, the series was canceled after three seasons. Bruce Campbell has since retired as Ash, but some of his lines from the show will live on forever in the horror community thanks to the show’s dark humor.

10 “PABLO, FOCUS UP! JUST STAY BEHIND ME. LET THE BOOMSTICK DO THE TALKIN’. THINGS GET HAIRY, USE YOUR BOTTLE”

In the first season of Ash vs Evil Dead, Pablo Bolivar was quick to follow Ash in his fight against the deadites. In the second episode called “Bait”, Kelly Maxwell (another co-worker of Ash) gets a strange call from her father, who claims Kelly’s deceased mother is back at home. Kelly rushes off before Pablo and Ash can stop her, but they quickly catch up to protect her.

When they are outside of her house, Ash says, “Pablo, focus up! Just stay behind me. Let the boomstick do the talkin’. Things get hairy, use your bottle”. Pablo doesn’t think the broken glass bottle is a very good weapon since Ash just had to stab a deadite 50 times to kill it, but Ash claims that he was only sharpening it for him.

9 “I’M GONNA BA LIKE A NINJA LOSING HIS VIRGINITY, QUICK AND DISCREET”

The second episode of season 2 is one of the more memorable episodes of the series since it has a graphic and disgusting scene of Ash fighting the intestines of a dead person. Ash and Kelly go to a morgue to retrieve the Necronomicon since Ruby said she hid it in the stomach of a dead body there.

Ash tells Kelly, “I’m gonna be like a ninja losing his virginity, quick and discreet.” Ash was definitely neither quick nor discreet as the intestines of a dead body attack Ash and literally pulls his head through the bottom of a dead person.

8 “ALRIGHT, LOOK, WE GET THIS DONE QUICK ENOUGH, WE MIGHT HAVE TIME TO STOP FOR CHURROS”

Ash Williams is by no means racist, but he isn’t always sensitive to people’s ethnicity or beliefs. In the first season, Ash is talking to Kelly and Pablo and says, “Alright look. We get this done quick enough, we might have time to stop for Churros. And look, that’s not a racist thing Pablo. That’s just a great dessert.”

Pablo responds by saying that he isn’t Mexican to which Ash exclaims, “That’s the spirit!” Unfortunately, things get a lot less light-hearted after the crew goes into Books from Beyond. Instead of making things better with the help of Lionel, they unleash a vicious demon known as Eligos.

7 “LIFE IS HARD AND DANGEROUS, AND SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTTA CHOP OFF SOMEBODY’S HEAD TO SURVIVE”

Ash Williams has no doubt had a rough life. When he was younger he had to murder his friends in a cabin after they read from the Necronomicon. Ash is absolutely a survivor, doing things that would make many people lose their minds. Ash seemed to spiral out of control in Evil Dead 2, but he always ends up on top.

In season 1 episode “Fire in the Hole” Ash explains that “Life is hard and dangerous, and sometimes you just gotta chop off somebody’s head to survive.” While this rings true for Ash, it probably isn’t a great lesson to use in everyday life.

6 “WELL CHERYL, IT’S BEEN FUN CATCHING UP. SORRY I GOT TO KILL YOU. AGAIN”

While several characters died in the original Evil Dead series, there were a handful of actors that got to return for Ash vs Evil Dead. Ellen Sandweiss, who played Cheryl Williams, was one such actress that returned in the show in the form of a deadite.

Fans were thrilled to see Ash reunite with his sister, but things ended the same way they did back in the ‘80s. When it is once again time for Cheryl to die, Ash says, “Well, Cheryl, it’s been fun catching up. Sorry I got to kill you. Again.”

5 “THE OTHER THING I GOT TO DO IS SOME CARDIO, ‘CAUSE MY HEART IS JACKHAMMERING LIKE A QUARTERBACK ON PROM NIGHT”

Bruce Campbell returned to the Evil Dead series over thirty years after the first film came out. Like most people Campbell wasn’t in as good of shape as he was in the ‘80s, but the show plays this off with jokes. When Ash is talking with Pablo and Kelly in his trailer he grabs the Necronimicon and says he has to go see someone to fix his mistake.

He then says, “The other thing I got to do is some cardio, ’cause my heart is jackhammering like a quarterback on prom night.” The following scene then shows Ash cutting off the head of his elderly neighbor before saying that he feels groovy.

4 “ONE FALSE MOVE AND I WILL SECOND AMENDMENT YOUR BRAINS ALL OVER THIS TRUCK”

While fans were thrilled to see Bruce Campbell return as Ash, the supporting characters of the series were also widely accepted by fans. One of these characters was Kelly Maxwell, played by Dana DeLorenzo. Together, Kelly, Pablo and Ash made up The Ghost Beaters and they really were a good team. While Kelly initially didn’t believe in Ash, she was quick to change her mind and become a formidable fighter.

In the episode “Fire in the Hole” the gang is captured by militiamen. After regaining control of the situation, Kelly says, “One false move, and I will Second Amendment your brains all over this truck.” Lines like that really support the claim that Kelly should have been Ash’s daughter over Brandy.

3 “ASH, IF I WAS A DEADITE, I WOULD BE HONORED TO HAVE YOU CHOP OFF MY HEAD”

Pablo Simon Bolivar created the name The Ghost Beaters for his pack with Ash and Kelly. Pablo seemed to be fascinated by Ash Williams from the beginning and was no doubt his most loyal companion. Pablo had quite the story arc and was even possessed by the Necronomicon and birthed Ruby’s demon children by vomiting them up.

Pablo was so loyal to Ash that he once said, “Ash, if I was a deadite, I would be honored to have you chop off my head.” Pablohad some close calls in the show, but thankfully he ended up surviving his adventures with Ash.

2 “IT’S KINDA LIKE SPILLING PAINT ON A PAINTING. IT’S OKAY ‘CAUSE THERE’S ALREADY PAINT ON IT”

While Ash is the most successful deadite slayer and humanity’s only chance against the Evil Dead, he was quite naive at times. A prime example of this is when The Ghost Beaters go to visit Lionel Hawkins to have him read from the Necronomicon. Since Ash read from the book after having a booze and drug-fueled evening with his girlfriend, he was hoping that reading from it again might somehow make things better if they find out information from a demon.

Ash explains his logic by saying, Yeah that’s true, but reading from it again can’t make things any worse. It’s kinda like spilling paint on a painting. It’s okay ‘cause there’s already paint on it.”

1 “I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SPEND TIME IN ‘THE CITY SO NICE THEY NAMED IT JACKSONVILLE”

After leaving Books from Beyond, the gang heads to see Pablo’s Uncle; El Brujo. After Kelly becomes possessed by Eligos, El Brujo gives Ash a hallucinogenic that takes him to Jacksonville Florida and he even talks to his pet bearded dragon named Eli.

According to El Brujo, Jacksonville is Ash’s spiritual center and Ash even confesses, “It’s everything I ever dreamed of.” Ash later says, “I’ve always wanted to spend time in the city so nice they named it Jacksonville.” The line is clearly a joke about New York’s famous saying, but it is just the kind of thing Ash would say.
