Jaws dropped everywhere when Lexi’s play finally had its premiere on HBO’s Euphoria. The way that Lexi had described the play to Fezco was definitely lacking. She described it as a play about friendship that wasn’t likely to upset anyone. Once the curtains fell, fans realized that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Like the audience members in the high school auditorium, Euphoria viewers had a range of emotions from shock to pure entertainment. Fans were quick to translate those reactions into hilarious memes that went straight to the internet for everyone to enjoy.

The Sets Cost The Whole School Budget

While the many sets of Lexi’s plays were incredibly impressive and meticulously detailed, fans very quickly tried to do the math of the high school theatre department budget and things weren’t adding up. Most high school plays have a few sets that switch off from each other, but Lexi’s operated like a Broadway show, never even repeating a location.

Twitter user @taterhead joked about the intricacy of the production, showing a picture of a barren school lunch and saying that that would be all the high school would be able to offer in the way of lunches after Lexi’s play spent so much of the school’s money.

Ethan’s Back Pain Afer Carrying The Show

The love for Ethan grew exponentially in the Euphoria fan base after seeing him in the play. Ethan may be a supporting character, but he tapped into his main character energy for his performance. Fans knew Ethan had been cast in the play, but they had no idea just how involved he was.

Ethan played both of Lexi’s parents, an older ex-high school student, and even “Jake,” Nate Jacobs’ representative role. Not only was he playing multiple roles, but he was absolutely loving it. He was seen blissfully happy backstage in between scenes and giving his all to the “I Need A Hero” dance number. Fans all agree he needs some kind of award for all his hard work.

Lexi Really Did That

As previously mentioned, Lexi kept it very well-hidden exactly how brutal her play was–especially to her closest friends and family. And, as fans very quickly found out, it was very, very brutal. Even Lexi herself seemed to be unaware of just how destructive the play could be to her personal life.

Therefore, this remix of the famous little girl smiling in front of a house fire with Lexi’s face used instead is a perfect representation of the episode: Lexi, wildly happy with how her play is going and totally ignorant of the destruction that is being left in her wake.

Kat’s Odd Scene Insert

One of the things that have made no sense in Euphoria season 2 has been Kat’s complete lack of screen time. Her “kittenkween” online persona was completely dropped and replaced with choppy and utterly out-of-character scenes between her and Ethan. Then, all of a sudden, “kittenkween” made a bizarre return in the middle of Lexi’s play.

The scene was so out-of-place, especially when spliced between Cassie and Nate’s disturbing montage. Fans were very confused, and they quickly called it out in meme form, showing a girl randomly dropping it low in a white abyss for no reason.

Everyone Laughs Until Their Scene

This meme perfectly replicates the main characters’ reactions to other scenes in Lexi’s play versus their own scenes. Rue was seen finally smiling a bit amid her recovery, but she was moved by Lexi’s scenes about their friendship. Maddie was all laughs until her and Cassie’s friendship came up, and then she looked as though she was close to tears.

The only exceptions to this meme would be Cassie and Nate, who looked to be pretty consistently pained throughout the entirety of the show. Cassie had to excuse herself to the bathroom to cry, and Nate was so infuriated by his scene that he added to the laundry list of awful things that he’s done so far, and dumped Cassie immediately upon storming out of the school.

Suze Was So Supportive

While everyone else may have been horrified during their scenes, Suze couldn’t get enough of Ethan’s portrayal of her. She was excited whispering, “That’s supposed to be me!” to everyone around her and cheering the loudest of all the audience members.

Suze was the most supportive mom she could be and was thoroughly enjoying herself. The show even cut to an actual memory featuring Suze, and there was hardly a difference between her and Ethan’s mannerisms. Her feelings weren’t hurt in the slightest and she thought the entire thing was hilarious. She looked just like Joey Tribbiani seeing himself on screen.

A Heartfelt Moment Amid The Carnage

Mixed in with Lexi’s very harsh criticism of her friend’s life choices were some sweet memories about the beginnings of their friendships. For example, fans learned that when Lexi dressed up as Bob Ross while everyone else went “sexy” for Halloween, it was a reference to Rue and Fezco drawing on her face the first time she smoked with them.

Lexi is one of the most stylish characters on Euphoria, so if she wanted to put together a sultry costume, she could have. But, she also has a unique sense of humor and was making a heartwarming homage to her bond with Rue as well as a memory with Fez, and it’s very sweet.

Nate Jacobs’ Funeral

While Lexi’s scenes of characters like Rue, Maddy, and Cassie were sensational, none were more of a hot-button topic than the “I Need A Hero” dance number in “Jake’s” locker room with his football buddies. In fact, it’s been just as controversial for fans as it was for the Euphoria characters.

While some fans interpreted the scene as a statement about the largely homoerotic nature of hyper-masculine activities like football, which are often paired with a very homophobic mindset, others had a similar reaction to Nate. He may be competing with Cal for the role of biggest villain on the show, but some fans think he may have had a point. Regardless, Lexi utterly destroyed Nate Jacobs and left no chance of survival.

Ethan Was Channeling Tom Holland

Many fans were waiting for Zendaya’s boyfriend, Tom Holland, to make a surprise appearance. The actor has spoken many times about his desire to guest-appear on the show and it seemed like the play would be the perfect opportunity. Unfortunately, Holland was nowhere to be seen, but Ethan channeled a lot of his energy for his big dance number.

A general consensus online was that the “I Need A Hero” dance number was reminiscent of Holland’s “Umbrella” performance on Lip Sync Battle back in 2017 when he was on the show with Zendaya. He famously danced his heart out in a burlesque-style routine as rain poured from the ceiling–and Ethan’s amazing dance skills made fans think of the iconic performance.

Ethan Is Not Boring

Kat and Ethan’s relationship was very cute in season 1. But, for some unknown reason, they seemed to fall apart in season 2. Fans didn’t see too many of their interactions because of Kat’s cut storyline, but he didn’t appear to be doing anything wrong. The main complaint Kat had about Ethan was that he was “boring.”

If there was anything that could prove Kat exponentially wrong, it was Lexi’s play. Ethan wasn’t just one lead character, but several, doing multiple costume and acting changes in each act of the play. He gave his whole heart to his performance and was one of the best of the entire show. He showed everyone that he was anything but “boring.”
