The adult animated stop-motion dark comedy, The House has premiered on Netflix, and it’s guaranteed to leave fans of the genre impressed. The show tells different stories about three sets of characters that get to live in the same house. Different time periods are also explored in the show that mixes human and animal inhabitants.

Luckily, fans who enjoy the Netflix release won’t miss something similar to watch when there are done. Shows similar to The House are mostly those that employ animated stop motion techniques, employ dark or adult humor, tell multiple stories involving the same locations and cover complex themes.

The PJs (1999- 2001)

Created by Eddie Murphy, The PJs follows a Black man living in the Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs housing project. The show’s plot is mostly a satirical take of life in a housing project.

The type of standup humor that Eddy Murphy controversial earlier in his career is what’s mostly used in the series. Crude and offensive remarks are sprinkled in unapologetically. After all, Family Guy, which had begun airing around the same time had shown that this was okay. The narrative doesn’t just focus on laughs either. Viewers are constantly reminded of how difficult life is for the main characters but in all the struggles, they never lose hope.

SuperMansion (2015)

Aging metahuman Titanium Rex—the leader of the League of Freedom—becomes disgruntled upon realizing that the new age of superheroes has no interest in fighting crime. He thus decides to mentor them in his mansion.

The voiceover work is the most impressive thing about the Crackle and that’s hardly surprising because there are talents such as Bryan Cranston, Chris Pine, and Keegan-Michael Key doing the magic behind the scenes. The visuals are brilliant too, with the perfect mix of color ensuring nothing is ever dull.

Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World (2007 – 2008)

A spinoff of Q. Allan Brocka’s short of the same name, the stop motion sitcom follows the lives of Rick and Steve as they interact with other LGBTQ couples in their West Lahunga Beach neighborhood. The show aired on Teletoon’s adult block, “The Detour.”

The sitcom distinguishes itself by painting most of its characters as members of the LGBTQ community rather than just including a single gay couple among straight ones as most productions do. While heavily championing the LGBTQ agenda, Rick & Steve isn’t afraid to mock itself as it heavily uses politically incorrect jokes.

Santa Inc. (2021)

The most prominent female elf in the North Pole decides she wants to become the first female Santa Claus. She thus goes on a journey across the globe.

The HBO Max comedy isn’t afraid to provoke, constantly packing in raunchy humor by the boatload. The expectation would be for a show about Santa to be very but Santa Inc. mostly steers clear of the holiday joy and instead chooses to cover themes such as drug addiction, equality, and prostitution.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole (2010 – 2012)

Based on the fictional pop culture icon Victor Frankenstein, the Adult Swim show sees the mad scientist create wormholes connecting to his Eastern European house. These enable him to time-travel and access any place on Earth whenever he wants.

The adult stop-motion series makes sure fans of Victor Frankenstein by including all the popular characters from the old tales. The mad scientist seems even smarter here, coming up with groundbreaking innovations that change the world. As a result, Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole doesn’t feel like a clone of some of the best Frankenstein movies that have been released over the years.

Crossing Swords (2021 – Present)

A morally upright peasant is appointed to his dream position of Squire at the king’s castle. A few days into the job, he becomes disgruntled after learning that the kingdom is helmed by hedonistic monarchs and charlatans.

The amount of debauchery going on in Crossing Swords might be hard to keep up with but missing a thing or two isn’t such a bad thing because the plot isn’t too complicated. The stop-motion sitcom trades a strong narrative for shocking moments and manages to cruise just smoothly by doing so.

M.O.D.O.K. (2021)

The Hulu show focuses on a supervillain with dreams of conquering the world. But as he tries to make his dreams a reality, he ends up destroying his organization.

Incredible voice work is what makes the series palatable. There are plenty of Marvel cameos and easter eggs in M.O.D.O.K. too, making the stop-motion series something that franchise fans will largely enjoy. For those not familiar with everything that goes on in the MCU, there are still enough general jokes to keep them entertained.

Celebrity Deathmatch (1998 – 2007)

The MTV sports entertainment parody shows popular, and often annoying celebrities, engaging in professional wrestling matches. These matches often end in the deaths of participants.

Packed with gore, there is no shortage of shocking scenes in Celebrity Deathmatch. Even though the violence drew controversy, its lengthy run suggested that millions of eyes were tuning in every week to watch celebrities get beaten enough. That the show was revived shortly after getting canceled was also proof of its popularity.

Gary & Mike (2003)

Fed up with life at home, two best friends choose to travel across the US, making stopovers in several places. Along the way, they end up messing with multiple lives.

The incredible voices work well in carrying the show since the bumbling buddies are made to sound as ridiculous as they act. There is plenty of satire, with popular politicians and celebrities not being spared. Even better is that their adventures tend to get weirder with every new episode.

Moral Orel (2005 – 2008)

A young boy is raised by strict religious parents, coaches, and priests. However, he always misunderstands what he’s taught and does the opposite.

As one of the best Adult Swim shows, Moral Orel heavily tackles deep issues such as religious fundamentalism, morality, and alcoholism. It explores Middle American life with a keen lens too, though not everyone will find the humor palatable. But hidden underneath the heap of controversial moments is a great plot that keeps viewers invested.
