The Sinnoh region of Pokémon gave fans many beloved creatures today, and the new Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl games have surely brought that to a new generation of fans. There are several from the franchise’s fourth region that proved to be competitively viable in the metagame.

Hard-hitting Special Attackers are a popular kind of Pokémon to use in battle, and several Legendary species unsurprisingly make up several of Sinnoh’s roster. However, there are still plenty of regular species with impressively high Special Attack stats.

10 Magmortar

Fire Pokémon have historically had a high focus on the Special Attack stat, so it’s expected for Magmortar to be one of the best Fire-Type Pokémon in general. Overall, Magmortar is a fairly well-rounded species when it comes to stats, with its Special Defense complementing the Attack.

Its base Special Attack stat stands at 125, with a great movepool selection at its disposal. Moves like Fire Blast are essential to make use of its Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB), but Magmortar also has access to impressive Special offensive coverage moves like Psychic and Thunderbolt.

9 Roserade

With so many fan-favorites out of the Sinnoh region, it’s surely a delight that one of the most used Pokémon from Diamond and Pearl is so competent in battle, too. Roserade was a new species for the Nintendo DS games as an evolution to the Hoenn region-native Roselia. This Pokémon is a dual Grass/Poison-type with a Special Attack stat of 125 as well.

This combination is great for whittling down opponents, as Toxic Spikes can inflict Poison on the party and be paired up with Giga Drain for offensive STAB. Though Roserade has a shallow movepool when it comes to coverage, having access to the Fairy-Type move Dazzling Gleam is a solid one to have with that base Special Attack.

8 Heatran

Though one of the weaker Legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region games, Heatran packs a heavy punch thanks to its stats and dual-typing. Heatran is a dual Fire/Steel-Type with a base Special Attack stat of 130. Its Physical Attack is also impressive, and both of Heatran’s defensive stats make it a viable tank.

Steel is arguably the best defensive typing, so to be able to take a hit and return the favor is a valuable asset to have in combat. The Fire-Type Overheat and the Steel-Type Flash Cannon are excellent (if risky) moves to go on the offensive and provide solid coverage as well, with the likes of Dragon Pulse providing Heatran with even more depth.

7 Glaceon

The various “Eeveelutions” have long since become so iconic to the Pokémon franchise overall. Diamond and Pearl introduced two more in Glaceon and Leafeon. Glaceon is the strongest of the two in Special Attack, with a 130 ranking.

Unsurprisingly given its Ice typing, its defensive stats are fairly frail. But with heavy Ice-Type attacks like Blizzard and coverage moves like Shadow Ball, it can be a solid glass cannon Pokémon. Glaceon also has strong stalling moves like Yawn, and, if needed, its impressive 110 Physical Attack could allow for some offensive creativity.

6 Magnezone

Magnezone is another Pokémon that’s a bit on the lighter side when comes to defenses but can be lethal in attack. The dual Electric/Steel-type evolution Magnezone comes with a 130 Special Attack stat and a good movepool given its type combination.

Flash Cannon and Gyro Ball are solid Steel attacks, with the latter being great to turn its biggest weakness (Speed) into a strength. Meanwhile, it also has access to reliable Electric attacks like Thunderbolt and Volt Switch for hit-and-run tactics.

5 Abomasnow

Grass/Ice-Type is an interesting dual typing, and Abomasnow makes good use of it with its overall stat spread. Its base Special Attack sits at 132 and also has a high Physical Attack, Defense, and Special Defense.

With these stats, Abomasnow stands tall as one of the sturdiest of Sinnoh’s Special Attack-oriented Pokémon. The snowy giant’s offensive versatility makes attacks like Wood Hammer, Giga Drain, Blizzard, and Ice Punch all threatening. Meanwhile, it also has access to moves like Focus Blast and Earthquake for some hard-hitting coverage.

4 Darkrai

One of Sinnoh’s most daunting Legendary Pokémon is the elusive and ominous Darkrai. It was incredibly hard to catch in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum due to being locked behind an in-person, event-only key item.

The Dark-Type lives up to its reputation with a hefty 135 Special Attack, as well as a blistering 125 Speed stat. Its other stats are solid as well, making Darkrai a difficult opponent to bring down with its movepool consisting of Dark Pulse for STAB and others like Shadow Ball for coverage.

3 Lucario

Lucario is one of the franchise’s most iconic mascot Pokémon. Even now, Lucario is one of the best Dual-Type Steel Pokémon. Its base stat spread of 140 in Special Attack and even higher 145 Physical Attack makes it a fearsome and ideal mixed attacker.

Lucario’s arsenal consists of Flash Cannon and Aura Sphere on the Special end, and Close Combat and Meteor Mash on the Physical side. It provides a wealth of offensive options, plus coverage moves like Dragon Pulse. Should players work in Swords Dance into its moveset, and Lucario becomes an insurmountable force if used correctly.

2 Palkia

Pearl and Shining Pearl‘s flagship Legendary, Palkia, has the joint second-highest Special Attack at a whopping 150. Similar to the likes of Darkrai, it’s unsurprising that its entire stat spread is so well-rounded.

Palkia’s “worst” stats are still solid and has several great options to make use of its 150 Special. Its dual Water/Dragon typing is superb for a Special-oriented attacker, with its signature Dragon-Type move Spacial Rend hitting for 150 base damage and Hydro Pump being fantastic for Water-type STAB. However, there are a plethora of moves that fit seamlessly in this Legendary’s moveset.

1 Dialga

With Diamond and Brilliant Diamond‘s flagship Dialga also at a 150 Special Attack, it’s another option for players especially looking for stronger defensive capabilities. Dialga has one of the strongest dual typings in the games with Steel/Dragon, with the former reflecting its great Physical and Special Defense.

Its Dragon-Type signature attack, Roar of Time, is comparable to Palkia’s Spacial Rend but also has access to others like Draco Meteor. Flash Cannon is another go-to move for a Special-oriented Steel-Type, and both types give Dialga plenty of coverage ranging from Fire Blast to Thunder.
