There are some shows that seem destined to become the sort of feel-good television that people gravitate to in order to escape from the pressures of the real world. All Creatures Great and Small is almost certain to become one of those series, focusing as it does on a cast of characters that work as vets in a small town in the Yorkshire Dales of England.

Fortunately for those who enjoy the series, there are a number of others out there that have a similar setting or feeling to that evoked by this charming show.

All Creatures Great And Small

Those who loved this iteration of All Creatures Great and Small will surely find much to enjoy about the original series, which aired from the 1970s to the 1990s.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Featuring some of the same characters and based on the same series of books, it’s the sort of charming British series that was very popular during that period. What’s more, it’s fascinating to see just how many changes the new version has made, both to the books and to its predecessor.

Rosemary And Thyme

Part of the appeal of All Creatures Great and Small is that it immerses the viewer in a charming world in which the stakes are real and not overwhelming, and where the viewer feels like they get to know the characters. A similar dynamic is at work in Rosemary & Thyme, a cozy British mystery featuring two women who, in the process of doing their gardening jobs, solve a number of crimes.

There’s an undeniable chemistry between the two leads, and they make the viewer cheer for them as they try to figure how who did the killing.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot

The works of the famous mystery writer Agatha Christie have been adapted several times for the screen, but there’s no question that David Suchet is one of the best actors to have portrayed her famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.

The series has everything that fans of cozy British dramas could want, whether that’s its 1930s setting and trappings, the way that Suchet captures Poirot’s mannerisms, or the fact that, with some exceptions, all of the plot threads are wrapped up by the end of the episode.

Father Brown

The British have certainly excelled at creating a number of cozy mysteries and TV series, and that includes Father Brown. As the title suggests, it focuses on a Roman Catholic priest in a fictional English village who solves a number of murders and crimes involving his parishioners and others. And, as with all good mysteries of this type, he often comes into conflict with the police.

With its cozy English setting (this time in the Cotswolds) it’s sure to appeal to fans of All Creatures Great and Small.

Agatha Christie’s Marple

Agatha Christie’s other notable crime-solver, Miss Marple, has been portrayed by several women on-screen over the years, including both Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie, who star in this series.

As with the other iterations of the character, Miss Marple appears as a surprisingly feisty and incisive older lady who solves crimes that almost no one else can. And, for fans of All Creatures, many of the episodes are set in the tiny village of St. Mary Mead, giving it the sort of provincial charm that is a hallmark of so much British television.

Call The Midwife

There have been many great British period dramas over the past several years, and one of the most notable is Call the Midwife. As with all great shows of this type–including All Creatures Great and Small–it immerses the viewer in a different world, in this case, England during the 1950s and 1960s.

And, though it focuses on a group of midwives, their daily experiences, and those that they help, it also shows the ways that the historical forces of the time influenced and impacted the personal lives of regular people.

As Time Goes By

As Time Goes By is one of the best British sitcoms to have been made in the past several decades, and it is often regarded as one of Judi Dench’s best roles. It focuses on a man and a woman who rekindle their romance after having spent decades apart.

It has the same sort of whimsical charm as All Creatures Great and Small, and though the stakes are often rather low, it still manages to make the viewer care about these characters, their romance, and their life together.

The Durrells In Corfu

One of the great appeals of a series like All Creatures Great and Small is that it allows the viewer to get a feel for what British life was like during the late 1930s and 1940s.

In a similar way, The Durrells in Corfu manages to immerse viewers in the strange yet wonderful world of Corfu during the 1930s, as well as the title family’s efforts to make a new life on the island after they leave England due to a lack of money.

Land Girls

The 1940s has proven to be a rich source of dramatic material for period television. One of the most notable outings has been Land Girls, which focuses on a group of four young women who all work to do their part to help their country win the Second World War while working as part of the Women’s Land Army.

As with so many other great series of this type, it manages to both immerse viewers in this time period and allow them to get invested in these characters’ lives.

Young James Herriot

The works of James Herriot have provided the raw material for a wide variety of visual media and adaptations. In addition to the original television series, there is also this series, which focuses on the career of James during his time at the veterinary college in Glasgow.

As a result, it gives viewers a much deeper and richer understanding of the struggles that he faced during his time there, as well as the broader social and cultural forces affecting the United Kingdom.
