Everyone, one time or another, has come across an interesting drama series that they just couldn’t seem to get through. It’s tough to find something that’s engaging, not-cringeworthy and easy to follow (and even if a show does all these three, it might not be enough).

All this being said, on Reddit, many people have discussed what popular drama series they just couldn’t finish because of one reason or another and there are definitely some overarching themes of what shows keep audiences interested for a little while.

Ozark (2017 – 2022)

  • Available To Stream On Netflix
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Redditor golden-oceans says that they “can’t get through Ozark on Netflix.” The series follows a family that tries to lay low in the Ozarks after the father, Marty Byrde, has a money laundering scheme that goes south.

Other Redditors on this post also admitted that this show takes quite a while to pick up even though the casting, acting and cinematography are all great. It’s a gritty drama series with some seriously high stakes, but it just doesn’t pack the same high stakes punch in the first season as it does in Ozark’s season 4, where some of the most shocking plot twists occur.

Lost (2004 – 2010)

  • Available To Stream On Hulu

According to behemothMonster, Lost is impossible to finish because “something about it just doesn’t click.” This quintessential 2000s series follows a group of people who are stranded on a mysterious island after surviving a brutal plane crash.

Overall, this series was good for the time, but starting it now, especially since most people already know the surprise twist ending of the show, is just not as thrilling as watching it when it first came out. It’s not an easy show to binge by any means as the timeline isn’t chronological and it deals with flashforwards, flashbacks, and even flash-sideways.

Supernatural (2007 – 2020)

  • Available To Stream On Netflix

Redditor BBCnich says that Supernatural “should have ended after season 5” and that’s the reason they just can’t seem to get through the rest of the series. Even most fans of the series and the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, who has an era of great episodes on the show, all tend to agree the show should have ended at season 5.

This series follows two monster hunting brothers as they search for their dad and the demon that killed their mom. However, by the time season 5 comes about, it turns into a tale about the apocalypse. The final episode of that season was even written as if it were a finale, but the show went on for another 10 seasons. It’s almost impossible for anyone to stay engaged for that long.

Arrow (2012 – 2020)

  • Available To Stream On Netflix

This Redditor says Arrow “became garbage in [season 4] and stayed that way.” The series follows Oliver Queen, a rich kid who disappears for 5 years. He is then discovered to be on an island and returns home, where he then becomes a vigilante who is on a mission to stop the powerful people who tried to kill him and his father.

Arrow is based on the DC comic books and, while the first few seasons were full of tension and action, the plot became too convoluted and hard to follow after season 3. It’s a good show, it just doesn’t stay that way until the end, which means it’s not easy to finish.

The Vampire Diaries (2009 – 2017)

  • Available To Stream On Netflix

The Vampire Diaries is a well loved series, but valiantmandy says they “didn’t even watch the last season or two because Elena wasn’t in it.” The show follows Elena Gilbert, who has some of the best quotes, and her love triangle with the mysterious vampire Salvatore brothers.

When Nina Dobrev, the actor who plays Elena, decided to leave after season 6, fans of the show were outraged that it didn’t get cancelled immediately. She is the main character and TVD just couldn’t keep the same quality of content without her in that role.

Dexter (2006 – 2013; 2021)

  • Available To Stream On Hulu

TalsHell says they couldn’t finish Dexter because “the last season might be worse than watching a CBS comedy.” The series follows a serial killer who only kills other killers, which is a great and thrilling premise for people who love darkly comedic crime shows.

Saying that the last season is worse than a CBS comedy means that this show lost it’s realism and entered into the cringeworthy space, where few people can muster up the courage to watch until the end. It’s unfortunate considering Dexter started off with so much promise and just took itself too seriously.

The Walking Dead (2010 – 2022)

  • Available To Stream On AMC

The Walking Dead is one of the best series of the 2010s, but BillitChillit didn’t decide to finish it because it “all [went] downhill after the first season.” The show follows survivors of the zombie apocalypse as they fight to survive and rebuild in this new and dangerous world.

Multiple Redditors, beside this one, also commented on their inability to finish the series and it’s repetitive nature of main characters dying again and again. All in all, getting through all 10 season can be a struggle considering the cast changes so much from season to season and the quality of the content has decreased significantly since it’s inception.

Better Call Saul (2015 – 2022)

  • Available To Stream On Netflix

YoSoyRawr says getting through season 2 of Better Call Saul was impossible because “I don’t know how many more voicemails I can watch Jimmy leave for Kim or how many more meetings I can watch Kim sit through…,” meaning their main complaint is just that there’s too much monotony and repetition.

The series follows Saul Goodman, the sketchy lawyer from Breaking Bad, as he deals with cases and avoids getting caught for some of his misdeeds. While Breaking Bad was exceptional, this Redditor didn’t see this spinoff series as equally interesting or action driven. It just lacks the antihero complexity of Walter White in Breaking Bad that made audiences turn their heads each episode.

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (2018 – 2020)

  • Available To Stream On Netflix

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is a series that Redditors have unpopular opinions about and one of them is that most fans just can’t seem to finish it. SnooConfections3389 even says that “what was so well researched and rich in history and mythology has just turned in to another set of boring teenage love stories with no substance.”

As this series became more and more intertwined with Riverdale, it started to lose some of it’s darker themes and serious nature. Because of this change in tone that happens in Part 4 specifically, this Redditor didn’t want to watch the end because it had turned into a normal CW teen drama.

Game Of Thrones (2011 – 2019)

  • Available To Stream On HBO Max

Redditor HankHeyNow says that they can’t get through Game Of Thrones at all because “I get like two episodes in and my eyes start to roll up on my head.” The fantasy series follows different powerful families as they all try to take over Westeros and claim the throne.

Overall, this show was one of the most popular of the 2010s, but it is incredibly dense with characters and lore, and it has copious amounts of graphic sex and violence. It’s not the easiest show to watch and even though it’s exciting, it takes a while to fully understand the politics of this fictional world.
