When Disney purchased Lucasfilm for many, many billions of dollars back in 2012, it was pretty much fate that we would see some new entries into the Star Wars franchise. A new trilogy was pretty much everything fans could have hoped for, even if it has ended up taking on a rather divisive existence.

The Force Awakens, directed by JJ Abrams, was full of so much fan service that many viewers claimed it simply ripped off the original Star Wars film. Whatever your viewpoint, here are ten Easter Eggs for superfans to sink their teeth into.

10 Daniel Craig

A lot of the time, Simon Pegg’s portrayal of Unkar Plutt is viewed as a cameo. But it isn’t, really, is it? It’s just an actor playing a character in a film- it’s his job! The true Force Awakens cameo is Daniel Craig. Dressed up in a stormtrooper costume where you’d never notice him and having only two lines, the James Bond actor truly pulls off the true meaning of a cameo appearance.

9 Parsecs

One of the most famous plot holes in the original Star Wars trilogy is related to Han Solo’s misunderstanding of how parsecs actually work in scientific terms. Rather than being a unit of time, like, in fairness, they sound like they would be, they’re actually a unit of distance.

Solo does a fantastic job of showing Han Solo taking a shortcut through the Kessel run and fixing the plot hole retrospectively, but before that film came out, Episode VII showed Rey and Solo discussing the age-old plot hole without once acknowledging its incorrectness.

8 Warwick Davis

Warwick David seems like one of the happiest actors of all time. He seems to truly love his job and loves making appearances in many film franchises across a long period of time. He got his first break as a child, playing an Ewok in Return Of The Jedi (a role he would later reprise in The Rise Of Skywalker), but has also appeared in various other Star Wars episodes as a variety of characters. His appearance in The Force Awakens is very subtle, but be on the lookout for a very distinctive Balrina called Wollivan in the background at Maz’s Cantina.

7 Maz Kanata’s Flags

Speaking of Maz Kanata, take a careful look around during the scene that leads us into her establishment. Just past the red droid who is wandering out are a selection of flags. Each one seems to be related to a different piece of Star Wars lore, covering everything from the symbols on Boba Fett’s armor to a few shown in the crowd at the Phantom Menace pod race.

6 Lost Cameos

JJ Abrams is known for directing/creating a lot of impressively sized franchises. Outside of his work on Star Wars, Abrams is known for creating the twist-heavy Lost series. It started off as a humble case of survival on an island, but eventually ended up as a global conspiracy centered on historical magic, time travel and alternate reality.

Whatever your views on the development of Lost as a show, there were some great characters and great actors within it. Three of these appear in The Force Awakens: Greg Gunberg, Ken Leung and Henry Ian Cusick.

5 “This Is A Rescue”

The Star Wars franchise likes to make overt nods to films from its past. As such, the line “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” appears in some form in every single feature film. JJ Abrams also manage to sneak another little reference in, by having Finn say “this is a rescue” when saving Poe. This is a nod to when Luke saves Leia and introduces himself by saying “I’m here to rescue you”.

4 The Holo-Chess Board

In the original Star Wars films, one of the favorite past-times of the cast, when they’re stuck inside the Millennium Falcon for days on end, is Holo-Chess. In effect, it is a game of chess played with strange hologram monsters, and rumor has it that Chewie cheats…

When Finn is rooting around in the Falcon, he ends up bumping into the chessboard and making it shakily switch on. The same board makes a welcome return in Episode IX as well.

3 The Voices Of Yoda And Obi-Wan

While we don’t get to see Obi-Wan or Yoda appear as Force Ghosts in The Force Awakens (even though we so desperately wanted to), we do hear them. When Rey touches Luke’s lightsaber and is thrown into that creepy montage of things she doesn’t quite understand, both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor deliver Obi-Wan lines, while if you listen carefully, you can pick out the wobbly words of Master Yoda himself.

2 A Gonk Droid

This is an Easter egg only those most familiar with Star Wars lore will be able to notice. Technically, it is a GNK Droid, but they have been lovingly referred to as Gonks since their introduction back in the original trilogy. They’ve never impacted the plot but JJ Abrams obviously wanted to chuck in a little nod to the pointless existence of these droids for the Star Wars fan who already has everything.

1 The Wilhelm Scream

Other than the presence and influence of Emperor Palpatine, there is one thing that cements each of the Star Wars films together: the Wilhelm Scream. This scream is a specific recording of a strange-sounding scream that has made its way into as many Star Wars films as Anthony Daniels.

The unique sound first appeared in 1953 when a character called Private Wilhelm screamed in The Charge At Feather River. In this film, it can be heard towards the start when a First Order Trooper is killed by a laser just as Finn and Poe are running past him. It always sounds slightly out of place, but it wouldn’t be Star Wars without it.
