Just like every drama series, Mad Men has its fair share of romantic relationships. As the series’ ensemble consists of largely imperfect characters, it’s not surprising to find that most of these relationships turn out to be quite toxic and one-sided. Such strained couples from the show also offer perspectives on professional conflict, mid-life crisis, and the sexism of the time.

Don Draper’s constant adultery, Pete Campbell’s immaturity, and Peggy Olsen’s romantic mishaps have found their way in numerous memes on Mad Men.

Don Draper’s love life is extremely unpredictable and the way his marriage to Megan got worse serves as proof. While Megan served as his secretary, both engaged in a fling that suddenly turned serious after she accompanied Don’s children to Disneyland. By the end of the trip, he gets moved by her genuine nature and gets the sudden urge to marry her.

Of course, this second marriage also ends with disastrous results, later on, but this also shows how detached Draper is from his kids. Even when he spends limited time with them, he ends up either dealing with business or engaging in his own romantic pursuits.

Be it with Don or with Henry, Betty Draper’s wishes are sadly sidelined in favor of the sexist expectations of her society. Just like the wives of other Sterling Cooper executives, Betty is always expected to be an ideal housewife to take care of the children, cook food, and so on.

In this meme, Betty throws a sarcastic jab at Don implying that he just sits in front of the TV all day when he’s not working. Given how Betty can be very straightforward and direct with her remarks, the meme plays out like an actual scene from the show.

8 Don’t Duck …

One of the most surprising relationships in the show was the affair between Peggy and her former work colleague, Herman ‘Duck’ Phillips. However, over time, the relationship turned sour, with Duck almost getting obsessive with Peggy.

This pseudo-Valentine’s Day card plays Duck’s name with a pun, while also encapsulating his unhealthy nature as a lover. Even when Peggy gets over him and rejects his advances, the hopeless, drunk Duck would still ask her to not “duck” from his love.

7 ‘I Don’t Think About You At All’

Despite Don Draper’s gestures of affection, his love for any woman seems to have a limited shelf life. Hence, it only makes sense for Don’s Valentine’s Day Card to let its recipient know that he doesn’t think about any of his lovers at all.

Even though this line is used in a different context for this meme, it was actually said in another scenario on the show. When Michael Ginsberg expresses his displeasure at Don using an idea of his, Don is unaffected by his hateful words and openly states that he just doesn’t care.

6 Literally, Any Other Woman

Even though Don Draper might seem like a man with tough skin, he’s very fickle in terms of his affection. It’s for this reason that his extramarital affairs shift between emotionless lovemaking and paranoid infatuation.

His constant adultery is so normalized that he ended up romancing Betty even after their divorce (cheating on Megan in this process). During the initial seasons, Don ended up getting intimate with “literally any woman” except his wife, be it his client’s daughter or his daughter’s school teacher.

5 Offended Abe

This parody of a Valentine’s card features Abe Drexler, a highly moralistic character. The journalist is not afraid to discuss the dark realities in his society and wishes that everyone were as righteous as him. However, in his relationship with Peggy, this has negative consequences, as it arouses a superiority complex within him.

While she might be toiling for an inherently capitalist ad agency, a sad character like Peggy still has to fight her daily struggles with workplace sexism and business tussles. Abe grows selfish in this regard, constantly calling her out and feeling offended by any of her views.

4 Don’s Insecurities

As has been discussed earlier, Don, like other Mad Men characters, engages in many romantic betrayals. However, at times, the reasons behind his actions aren’t even rooted in love or lust.

He’s often shown as a confused man with a stolen identity who’s willing to find some clarity. In this perpetual pursuit for the ultimate purpose in life, Don has an unhealthy habit of womanizing. Flings with women like Diana Baur reveal how he tends to project his own deep-seated insecurities onto his sexual partners.

3 Cheating In The Draper Family

Cheating is a recurring theme in Mad Men. While Don definitely tops the list for the highest number of affairs throughout the show, Betty also attempts to have a fling of her own that ultimately culminates in a marriage with Henry Francis.

In Betty’s defense, her adultery is quite expected, given the loveless marriage that Don subjects her to. Unfortunately, the vices of these two ex-lovers create a general air of disharmony among their children.

2 Peggy’s Baby

Peggy’s pregnancy was revealed at the end of season 1, easily becoming one of the biggest secrets on Mad Men. She, of course, hid this fact from the baby’s father, Pete Campbell. When Pete finally learns the truth, he is at a loss for words and is unable to process the information.

This meme makes use of Kanye West’s infamous, “Imma let you finish” speech to reveal the unexpected news that Peggy delivers. As is common knowledge, the rapper interrupted Taylor Swift’s win for Best Female Music Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

1 Roger And Joan’s Doomed Romance

As tempting as they are to resist, carbs are often sacrificed by those who wish to maintain a healthy diet. This rejection of carbs is used in the context of a serious scene from Roger Sterling and Joan Halloway’s relationship, a failed romance that Roger made worse.

Even though both had a passionate affair earlier, the love between them fizzled out, only to be revived again a few years later. When Roger wishes to secure the rest of his future with Joan, she rejects his advances. It’s not that Joan despises Roger, but she’s very well aware of the unhealthy nature of their relationship that would only create further issues, over time.
