Often, the barrier that separates the story from the real world is maintained and is known as “the fourth wall.” But, when a character speaks directly to the audience or references their fictionality, the wall is broken. While other shows and movies only break the fourth wall once or twice, it’s a recurring theme in the musical ABC series Galavant.

Galavant takes place during the Middle Ages, but it constantly references things from the modern era. Also, the characters are very aware that they randomly break out into song and dance. Fans find the constant fourth wall breaks both clever and hilarious.

10 Sir Jean Hamm

In the episode “Joust Friends,” Galavant enters a jousting tournament to help fund their journey to Valencia. At the competition, Galavant encounters his old rival, Sir Jean Hamm (played by John Stamos).

Jean Hamm’s name refers to the actor Jon Hamm, the star of the series Mad Men and films like Baby Driver. Sir Jean Hamm makes viewers laugh, and he embodies the show’s love for referencing pop culture. The character also tells “yo mamma” jokes, which are annoying to people in both 1256 and 2021.

9 “I Don’t Think It’s Been Invented Yet.”

Isabella and Galavant learn that Sid is a revered hero when they arrive at Sidneyland. To explain why the village thinks he’s an adventurer instead of a squire, Sid asks them if they know the phrase “it takes a village.” Galavant responds that the term hasn’t been invented yet.

Other shows set in different eras attempt to have their characters speaking correctly for the period they are in. But the dialogue in Galavant doesn’t stick to the Middle Ages. Instead, the characters humorously talk like the viewers do.

8 The Cancelation Bear

The second season’s first episode is titled “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear.” This title refers to the mascot of the site TVByTheNumbers, the Cancel Bear. The site predicted that Galavant would get canceled during its first season.

The episode additionally has a patron of the Enchanted Forest known as “the Bear.” Galavant thanks the patrons for not feeding him and Richard to the Bear. This joke is about how the show got saved from cancellation, and therefore, was not eaten by the Bear.

7 Commentary On Modern-Day Politics

When Richard finally makes it back to his kingdom, his castle is gone. His citizens have created democracy in his absence. While Richard has an identity crisis, Galavant asks for volunteers to join his army.

In response to Galavant’s proposal, the peasant John says, “I can’t imagine a free people ever voting to send an army into an open-ended foreign conflict which profits only the few. That would be madness.” This joke references modern-day politics. The quote makes viewers laugh, but at the same time reflects certain aspects of reality.

6 “Shut Up, Menken!”

During a flashback scene, the audience sees King Richard and his guard Gareth as kids. A young boy asks Richard, “Would you like me to write you a theme song, My King?” Gareth then shouts at him, “Shut up, Menken!”

The little boy is meant to be Alan Menken, the composer of Galavant. Menken is also known for his work in Disney movies like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. Making the show’s composer a character on the series is funny and a great easter egg for fans.

5 “It Does Seem Awfully Early In The Season For Something Like This.”

In the middle of season two, Sid accidentally stabs Galavant with a sword. Richard is shocked that Galavant is dead. Roberta also expresses her confusion, pointing out that it’s too early in the season for his death.

Audiences expect television series to follow certain rules. One of those rules is that the main character can’t die halfway through a season. Otherwise, there’d be no show. Roberta’s line amusingly winks at the viewer, telling them to question the permanence of Galavant’s death.

4 Game Of Thrones References

Galavant and others hypothesize that they will die during the last battle of the series. During the reprise of the song “A Good Day To Die,” Isabella’s mom interjects, “Oh please, this isn’t Game of Thrones.”

This isn’t the first Game of Thrones reference in the series. There’s a sign that says Winterfell in one episode, and the Chef mentions the White Walkers in another. The song humorously informs the audience that Galavant will have a happier ending than Game of Thrones.

3 “Skip the Football Matches, And The Globes Made Out of Gold”

“New Season” is the opening number of the second season. The song foreshadows plot points of future episodes. Also, the characters ask the fans to watch Galavant over other shows that they’re competing with for viewership.

Gareth tells the audience to skip football matches, and the Jester asks that they don’t watch the Golden Globes. The song additionally mentions shows like The Bachelorette and The Apprentice. Having the characters ask the audience to tune in every week is a fourth wall break unlike any other.

2 “Officer, I Had No Idea I Was Going That Fast”

Richard rides a horse to stop Roberta from going to Mount Spinster. On his way, he gets pulled over by an officer. Richard acts innocent, claiming that he had no idea he was going that fast.

People during the Middle Ages didn’t get in trouble for speeding on a horse. So, the audience sees this as a joke about how people try to get out of speeding tickets today. This moment of the show is something fans still laugh over.

1 “Are We Not Doing Our Own Stunts?”

When arriving to help the Hortensians in their battle against the Valencians (led by Madalena), Galavant hands King Richard a helmet. Richard looks disappointed and asks Galavant, “Are we not doing our own stunts?”

Stunt doubles usually step in for actors to do the more physically challenging or dangerous scenes. When this happens, the actor’s faces are hidden, so the audience can’t tell the difference. Richard implies this is what is happening because the helmet will obscure his face.
