There’s nothing quite better than sitting down and letting the mind go blank as one allows them to be overtaken by the beauty of action series. Action series don’t necessarily have to contain in-depth or complex ideas. Sometimes, all they need is some good action to move things along.

There’s no better place to go searching for said action series like on the streaming service HBO Max. Known for its mature material, animated goodness, and superhero nonsense, the action series come hard and fast and are always welcomed by fans and newcomers alike to the genre and series.

10 Teen Titans (7.8)

Believe it or not, there is plenty of animated series that can dive deep into the genre of action and capture a similar feel and sense as any well-seasoned live-action show. Surprisingly, one of the best of the bunch, Teen Titans, is on the lower side of IMDb.

Despite its 7.8 ratings, Teen Titans are considered to be one of DC’s best series (although some upcoming projects may change that). Full of great humor, fantastic storylines, and not to mention characters like Slade and Red X that lifted the series to new heights, unlike its successor.

9 Watchmen (8.1)

While it’s true that most action series don’t have a lot of thought-provoking storylines, there’s still a sign of intellect and in-depth ideas for sure. Even in superhero oriented series like Watchmen, complex ideas run amok and work alongside the action to create incredible stories.

Based on the hit comic that had much of the same mix of thought-provoking and action-packed storylines, Watchmen serves as a sequel to the comic and mixes the two concepts together beautifully, making for one of HBO’s most unique and intriguing tales that makes it one of the best miniseries in TV history.

8 Warrior (8.3)

There is of course the series that everyone knows, the shows that garner awards, attention, and all sorts of love. Yet, among the well-known arcs lie a decent number of lesser-known shows, ones along the lines of Warrior.

Following a martial arts prodigy making his way through 1870s’ San Francisco in search of his sister, Warrior, although not as well known as others, manages to be a fantastic series in its own right, with some high-level action, great performances, and a look into an otherwise unknown part of history.

7 Samurai Jack (8.5)

There’s no question about it that Samurai Jackthe series about a time-displaced samurai has one of the more memorable theme songs. The series action, animation, design, and Phil Lamar’s iconic character shine bright alongside the awesome theme that truthfully makes the show and makes it one of Genndy Tartakovsky’s best projects.

6 Deadwood (8.6)

Oftentimes, a series is trying to go forward in time, either in a new present or an unseen future. Yet, there are times when the past is far easier to dive into than the present or future, as it was with the western series Deadwood.

Exploring the western town of the same name, the series followed a group of settlers in a mining town in the post-civil war era. Although the series only lasted three seasons, it garnered a massive fan base due to its fantastic plot twists and acquired a film a few years ago.

5 Rome (8.7)

Of course, while most series tend to stay in the era of the 1800 or 1900s, everynow and then, a show will go beyond the typical era and norm and venture into somewhere a little less out of the norm, like the ancient world of Rome.

A two-season series that followed two soldiers making their way through the wars and fall of Rome, the series, although lasting a short period, was still a decent enough romp through the ancient world of Rome and provided enough historical context to remain interesting.

4 Primal (8.7)

“Actions speak louder than words”. In shows, those words are usually false, as just about every scene is filled with witty dialogue, over-the-top music, and massive explosions that rock the speakers. However, sometimes, actions are the right route to go.

Primal embodies this perfectly, standing out as one of Adult Swim’s best shows. Following the adventures of a caveman and T-rex named Spear and Fang, the series has little to no dialogue, relying on grunts, facial expressions, and actions to tell a beautifully animated story that pulls at the heartstrings all while bloody action rages on in the background.

3 Batman The Animated Series (9.0)

The ongoing argument for many DC and comic book fans is always about whether Batman the greatest hero. While the argument will remain ongoing, many will agree that Batman The Animated Series is one of the best-animated series of all time.

The list for why the show is the best is endless. From the gorgeous animation to the dark and gritty stories with an iconic voice cast of Kevin Conroy’s Batman and Mark Hamil’s Joker. Not to mention the adaptations of characters like Mr. Freeze and Clayface lets the series shine and has fans begging for a reboot.

2 Game of Thrones (9.3)

Game of Thrones — the series so many loved and yet at the same time, so many hated as well. When the show began, it was hailed as being one of the best on television, topped by only a select few with its storylines and character development.

Yet, when the show reached its unfortunate conclusion with the heavily divided season eight, the series lost quite a bit of respect. That being said, looking at the show as a whole, it still stands out as an achievement despite its flaws.

1 Band of Brothers (9.4)

Limited series can be a sign that the show is going to work. It may not seem like it but truth is, the longer a show is running, the more chance it has to sour as time wears on. Whether it be intentional, limited series is the right way to go.

Band Of Brother, a story of brotherhood during WWII, was intended to last one season and that decision was probably for the best. Full of some great performances from actors many forgot were in the series, the limited series strives to be the best out there.
