Hubie Halloween, Adam Sandler’s new Netflix comedy, recently debuted on the streaming service and was recently met with all the fervor (and some surprising acclaim) of all the Sandler comedies that have debuted in the homes of millions. It just makes for a perfect, lighthearted, spooky atmosphere.

Thanks to the Salem setting and the abundant Halloween aesthetic, complete with costumes and decorations. Considering it’s more goofy than horrific, Hubie Halloween scratches a particular itch for the Halloween filmgoers of the world. There are a few movies best suited to the tastes provided by Hubie Halloween (and easily frightened fans should steer clear of anything more horror-oriented than these).

10 The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special

Before he was a movie star cranking out Hubie Halloween on Netflix, Adam Sandler was paying his dues on Saturday Night Live. This particular Halloween movie/special is obviously well within the SNL lineage.

Tom Hanks’ David S. Pumpkins character was a major breakout of SNL a couple years back. When it was followed up with an animated special, it wasn’t quite as funny, but it’s still a fun, wacky Halloween event for annual fans.

9 Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein

While the David S. Pumpkins special is one of the most recent movies on the list, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein might just be one of the oldest. It came out all the way back in 1948, even featuring Bela Lugosi’s Dracula!

Like Hubie Halloween, this horror comedy is heavy on the slapstick and light on the spooks. It’s a wholesome family watch and one that all can enjoy. Plus, the gags often land better here than in Hubie itself.

8 Ernest Scared Stupid

The Ernest series of films starring Jim Varney are a bit more aligned with the Adam Sandler brand of comedy. Granted, Varney is similar in slapstick to Abbott and Costello, but the gags in Ernest are very Happy Madison-esque.

Additionally, Ernest is beloved in the many communities he inadvertently terrorizes, which is extremely similar to Hubie himself. He’s an unlikely hero, who also ends up getting scared ninety-nine percent of the time in Ernest Scared Stupid.

7 It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Around the Halloween time of year, slasher flicks like Halloween and Friday the 13th make their reappearances into the cultural zeitgeist. Chances are, though, if one loved Hubie Halloween, then they prefer the lighter scares to the horrifying kills.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown might just be the world’s most wholesome slice of Halloween content, though. While it has the classic sophistication of the Peanuts, Great Pumpkin has a tether to Hubie Halloween in the naive belief that Julie Bowen and Sally have in Hubie and Linus, respectively.

6 The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is one of the classic Disney animated films, but the Sleepy Hollow portion is the one that Hubie Halloween fans will adore. After all, it’s among the spookiest Disney stories yet!

Not only does the villain manage to win (the only Disney film to feature such an act) in Ichabod, but it also maintains the northeastern aesthetic that Hubie Halloween strives for. Both make for idyllic evening viewings.

5 Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit

The Wallace & Gromit collection is a pretty niche one in the world of animation. However, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit was the biggest story to come from them, bar none.

Obviously, it’s light on the terror that emanates from other types of Halloween stories. Yet, it’s the wholesomeness and good-nature of the characters that will connect best with those who rooted for the kindness of Hubie Dubois in Hubie Halloween.

4 Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo has become a Halloween classic in recent memory, largely because the live-action adaptation embraced the mystery elements of the original series, but added in plenty of comedy horror elements, too.

This is partially due to James Gunn, who wrote the first two Scooby-Doo movies. If someone was partial to Hubie Halloween because of its occasional absurd humor, then Scooby-Doo is the way to go.

3 Hocus Pocus

Any list of lighter Halloween fare on the big screen has to include Hocus Pocus. Just like Hubie HalloweenHocus Pocus is set in Salem and revolves around unlikely heroes rising to the occasion to save their communities.

On top of all that, though, Hocus Pocus also has the added benefit of Bette Midler singing! That’s something that makes everything better and Hubie Halloween could’ve stood to add a couple musical numbers.

2 Halloweentown

Another Disney film, Halloweentown, is an admirable compendium to the annual glory that is the Hocus Pocus traditions. While Halloweentown was made for television, it’s no less iconic in the world of Halloween films.

An entire community that dedicates itself to the holiday is an idea that’s present in Hubie Halloween. Yet, Halloweentown also possesses that magnetic, nostalgic charm. Hubie fans will flip for it.

1 Hotel Transylvania

Could any other film have slotted in at the top position? Of course, Hubie Halloween is not the first movie Adam Sandler made that was on the spookier side. Before he traveled to Salem, he made the animated Hotel Transylvania.

Like HubieHotel Transylvania has proven to be surprisingly watchable in the eight years of its existence. Sandler gets to play the iconic role of Dracula, but friends like Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, and David Spade also come to play. Complete with cameos and light frights, Hotel Transylvania is a spiritual cousin of Hubie Halloween.
