The emotion that formed the core of the Harry Potter series, and the one thing that kept Harry and his friends safe, was love. The books and movies revolve around not only the healing power of pure love but also its protective powers. Familial love and romantic love were the things that kept the characters going through the dark times that Voldemort brought upon them, with the greatest unions, like Fleur and Bill’s wedding and Tonks’ and Lupin’s marriage, taking place then.

Taylor Swift is the reigning queen of romantic songs, and her sparkling tunes capture exactly the type of sweet and enduring love that Harry Potter fans witnessed in the series. Naturally, Potter relationships (successful and otherwise) line up perfectly with some iconic Taylor Swift songs.

Harry Potter And Ginny Weasley – “Enchanted”

“I’m wonderstruck/Blushing all the way home/I’ll spend forever/Wondering if you knew/I was enchanted to meet you…”

A love that began for Ginny when she was young, Harry and Ginny’s romance blossomed as they grew older and both of them were pretty awestruck with each other. Ginny’s first encounter with Harry left her truly “enchanted,” and she worked through her shyness and exchanged awkward banter with him throughout the years as friends.

This song perfectly encapsulates Ginny’s feelings for Harry when she met him and their relationship timeline, even before she went to Hogwarts. Her fascination with him was immediate, and even though the two of them fell “in love with someone else,” they made it, in the end.

Hermione Granger And Ron Weasley – “It’s Nice To Have A Friend”

“School bell rings, walk me home/Sidewalk chalk covered in snow/Lost my gloves, you give me one/‘Wanna hang out?’/Yeah, sounds like fun/Video games, you pass me a note/Sleeping in tents…”

This song by Taylor Swift encapsulates perfectly a romance that started innocently in school as a friendship between two people, and progresses ever so slowly into love with a touch of a hand, a tiny shift in feelings, growing up, and seeing what was in front of them all along.

Ron and Hermione’s relationship with each other could get tumultuous, but underneath it all hid some true affection for each other. Snowy evenings, having each other’s back, and sleeping in tents were actual phenomena that the two experienced together.

Bill And Fleur Weasley – “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)”

“And I don’t know how it gets better than this/You take my hand and drag me head first, fearless/And I don’t know/why but with you I’d dance/In a storm in my best dress, fеarless…”

Bill and Fleur’s relationship wasn’t taken very seriously, especially by the Weasleys themselves, who made fun of Fleur and doubted her ability to fit into the family. However, the true extent of their commitment to each other showed when Fleur declared that Fenrir Greyback’s attack on Bill did not taint their relationship: it was their version of dancing in their best dress in the rain, fearlessly.

For the two of them, even the most mundane thing was made special by each other’s presence, and they really loved and lived without being scared of Voldemort, even harboring fugitives with them.

Lily And James Potter – “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)”

“We were both young when I first saw you/I close my eyes and the flashback starts/I’m standing there/On a balcony in/summer air/See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns/See you make your way through the crowd/And say, ‘Hello’/Little did I know…”

The short but sweet romance between Lily and James Potter has engendered tons of fan art about the couple, and with good reason. The two indeed “were both young when they first saw each other,” and unfortunately their relationship was always spoken about or depicted in flashbacks because of their tragic fate.

Getting married at 18 is no joke, but Lily and James knew that they were very much in love. Their love story began in Hogwarts, like many other couples in Harry Potter, and in a classic hatred turns to love situation, the two married and had Harry.

Remus Lupin And Nymphadora Tonks – “Safe & Sound”

“Just close your eyes/The sun is going down/You’ll be alright/No one can hurt you now/Come morning light/You and I’ll be safe and sound…”

Nothing describes the impossible situation that Tonks and Lupin were in when they fell in love. Just like the song, everything was on fire and they had numerous other obstacles, including Remus’ werewolf condition, which kept them from getting together.

But get together they did, and made sure they were safe and sound till the time they could be. The two lived and died together in the Battle of Hogwarts, but Lupin and Tonks were perfect together in Harry Potter. The song also eerily echoes Lupin’s werewolf condition with its lyrics about the “sun doing down.”

Arthur And Molly Weasley – “New Year’s Day”

“Don’t read the last page/But I stay when it’s hard or it’s wrong or we’re making mistakes/I want your midnights/But I’ll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year’s Day…”

Almost unanimously hailed as the best couple of Harry Potter, Molly and Arthur have the kind of love that lasts forever and holds strong through stormy waters. The song “New Year’s Day” speaks of exactly that bond, which lasts through every adversity, and a partner who stays and picks up bottles after a big party.

Molly and Arthur raised a family with less money but the right morals, sticking with each other long after the rose-hued haze of first love had passed.

Ron Weasley And Lavender Brown – “We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor’s Version)”

“(No) We are never, ever, ever getting back together/We are never, ever, ever (Ooh) getting back together/You go talk/to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me/But we are never, ever, ever, ever/Getting back together”

Ron’s first brush with love and relationships wasn’t a pleasant experience for him, nor was it for Lavender Brown. They had an intense infatuation that lasted a couple of weeks, but started to wane when Ron couldn’t handle the clinginess and being called “Won-Won.”

Besides, Ron was secretly in love with Hermione, which showed when he ended up in the hospital wing and asked for her instead of Lavender. Both parties ended up hurt, and they definitely didn’t want to get back together, no matter what the circumstances.

Harry Potter And Cho Chang – “Getaway Car”

You were drivin’ the getaway car/We were flyin’, but we’d never get far/Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery/Think about the place where you first met me/Ridin’ in a getaway car…”

Another ill-fated school relationship, Harry and Cho did have a spark, but the truth was that for Cho, the memory of Cedric was so real that Harry ended up being a rebound, or the “Getaway Car” in this case.

They tried hard, but just like in the song, there was betrayal involved when Cho and Marietta got interrogated by Umbridge and ended up revealing the presence of Dumbledore’s Army. Harry didn’t take kindly to Cho “switching to the other side” and their short bond came to an end fairly quickly.

Tom Riddle And Merope Gaunt – “Bad Blood”

Cause baby, now we’ve got bad blood/You know it used to be mad love/So take a look what you’ve done/’Cause baby, now we’ve got bad blood, hey!”

Everything about Tom Riddle Sr.’s relationship with Merope was wrong, and not just the fact that their child turned out to be Lord Voldemort. Merope bewitched Tom, an unsuspecting muggle, to fall in love with her and they got married, but when the effects of her spell wore off, Tom Sr. fled, rightfully.

There was so much bad blood between the two (which “used to be mad love”) that Tom didn’t even care for his son with Merope. It ended badly for all of them, and the damage done was so great it carried through generations.

Hermione Granger and Viktor Krum – “Superstar (Taylor’s Version)”

“So dim that spotlight, tell me things like/I can’t take my eyes off of you/I’m no one special, just another wide-eyed girl/Who’s desperately in love with you/Give me a photograph to hang on my wall, superstar…”

This was one of the sweetest relationships in the whole series, and very much a fairytale situation for Hermione who was dating a certified celebrity. Viktor was the superstar in this case for whom “all the girls in the front row screamed his name,” but the love that Hermione had for Viktor was not unrequited.

He saw the “wide-eyed girl” that she was and recognized her for her intelligence and distinctive qualities, and chose her over all the other girls. Viktor was actually very respectful and charming, and he wrote to Hermione long after he left Hogwarts.
