After dropping its six-episode first season back in July, Netflix’s Young Royals already has amassed quite a dedicated fan base. This isn’t all that surprising considering how the binge-worthy show teeters on the cusp of heartwarming and heartbreaking, with alternating scenes of adorable young love and shocking emotional tension.

However, most of the Young Royals fandom is in agreement: the show is painful, which is why viewers have turned to memes to help alleviate the sting of the first season.

10 The Season One MVP Award Goes To Erik

R.I.P. Prince Erik, a beloved character gone too soon. No fan saw his death coming and this meme found on Tumblr sums it all up perfectly. Erik’s unexpected accident only added to the tragedy that is Young Royals, especially because Wille was already going through so much — and then to lose his brother and closest confidant? Devastating.

Throughout the first season, Wille relies on his older brother Erik for support as he navigates a new school he doesn’t want to attend. Though miles away and probably busy with his crown prince duties, Erik makes himself available to Wille, lending a listening ear and cheering him up.

9 August Is The Worst

Every show needs a villain. And the newest addition to Netflix’s list of best teen shows is no exception. Early on, August fully embraces the villain role. Throughout the first season, he gives off pretty sinister vibes, alternating between intensely friendly and intensely menacing.

But the real kicker is when August outs Simon and Wille after taking a video of them in bed and then posting it online. Yikes. The whole fandom is still wondering why he thought this was a good idea. No seriously, what was the reason!?

8 The Farewell Is Why The Fandom Can’t Find Peace

Despite Young Royals only spanning six episodes, those six episodes really put Simon and Wille through the wringer. In addition to being outed by August to the entire country, Wille is forced to deny his sexuality to save face for the crown.

This obviously hurts Simon and sets the scene for what fans have dubbed “the farewell” in the last episode of the first season. There’s so much left open for interpretation, as Wille confesses his love for Simon and Simon responds with, “I hope you have a nice Christmas.”

7 This Season’s Supporting Villain: The Queen

Though Queen Kristina did not make the list of worst TV moms of the past decade, she really should have. It’s hard to empathize with a parent who chooses their career over their child, especially when Wille’s potential boyfriend provided a good opportunity for the queen of Sweden to show her support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Instead, Queen Kristina makes Wille deny his relationship with Simon in a publicity stunt, which doesn’t scream “ally” in the year 2021. Of course, Young Royals would have been a very different show if Kristina would have supported Wille publicly from the jump.

6 Seriously, Erik The Fandom Needs You

If there’s one flaw Prince Erik has it’s being friends with August. However, he was one of the only characters who seemed to be able to potentially talk reason into August. For better or worse, Erik can tolerate August, which is why the fandom needs him desperately should there be a season two.

With Netflix and the Young Royals cast all but confirming a second season, fans are hoping the show takes a magical turn — because how else will August be held accountable for his terrible choices?

5 Just A Daily Reminder For Everyone

There probably would have been no way to stop August. However, it never hurts to take some simple precautions. For example, closing the curtains would have been a good start.

The moral of Young Royals: it’s probably best to assume Wille’s brother’s intense friend isn’t trustworthy and to act accordingly. This, of course, includes doing the bare minimum, like closing the bedroom curtains when Wille and Simon are getting intimate. Who knows how the story would have unfolded if Wille and Simon had been a wee bit more cautious.

4 Young Royals Is Poetic Cinema

One of the reasons why Young Royals has captured so many viewers’ hearts is its sweet moments. In between darker subplots, the show did a great job of including tender scenes between Wille and Simon, Felice and Sara, and more.

The sweetest moment, and most telling of Wille’s feelings, was when Wille called Simon while under the influence and confessed his feelings in a very — for lack of a better word — poetic way. Truly, everything is fake except for Wilmon’s bond.

3 I- *Pain*

What did the infamous farewell mean for the future of Simon and Wille? Is Simon too hurt by everything that happened to let Wille in again? Or, in the moment, was he too aware of everyone watching his hug with Wille to confess his feelings?

Fans want answers and fast! As Netflix continues to play coy in revealing a second season, fans are turning to social media to make it known that they need more Simon and Wille on their screens stat, with some fans on Twitter even hoping for the possibility of a Christmas episode.

2 Wilmon Just Wanted To Have A Hot Girl Summer

August isn’t any fans’ favorite character. In fact, he’s so hated in the fandom that doesn’t even rank as a Young Royals’ most likable main character. Fans are especially confused by his motives. After all, jealousy isn’t the easiest trait to empathize with.

It’s harder still to empathize with a person willing to out someone they’re related to and who they claim to be their friend. Beyond his storyline with Wille, August remains an unredeemable character in many fans’ eyes, considering how he treats Felice and the people not in his little secret society.

1 No Thoughts, Head Empty Except For Young Royals

Young Royals has everything: likable characters, compelling plots and romance, and suspenseful twists and turns. For these reasons and more, it’s no wonder why so many fans are flocking to Netflix to rewatch Young Royals again and again.

Beyond the show’s interesting storylines, fans also enjoyed seeing young actors bring to life characters who are real and relatable teens. With so much to love about Young Royals, here’s to hoping the rumors of Netflix announcing a second season turn out to be true — and soon!
