Multiple streaming services have mushroomed in recent years, all with binge-worthy content. As one of the giants in the space, Amazon Prime has plenty of exclusive TV shows for viewers to check out. However, given the quantity, it might be hard to figure out exactly what one should invest their precious time in.

Luckily, there are a few notable recommendations on the popular forum website, Reddit. Apart from being the favorites of some users on the platform, these shows have also been received warmly by top critics, as well as viewers in general. As such, any new viewer will likely not regret pressing play.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Boys (2019 – Present)

In the superhero drama, a group of metahumans are seen as heroes by the American public but are secretly corrupt. It’s not all rosy for them as there is a team of vigilantes trying hard to bring them down. Redditor lloydchristmas1986 says, “My vote for best Amazon original would be The Boys.”

By painting a group of superheroes as corrupt individuals rather than genuine national treasures, the Eric Kripke series firmly creates its own space in a genre that has become overcrowded in recent years. Fans who feel burnt out from the numerous Marvel and DC projects will find this to be a welcome break. And since it’s made for adult audiences, The Boys entertains further by not shying away from gore, sex, and foul language.

Bosch (2014 – 2021)

RudePragmatist describes Bosch as “One of the best detective series I have watched in years.” Events revolve around a former special forces operative who now works as a detective in the LAPD.

Bosch is a slow burn but the suspense and depth of the plot make it one of the best procedural crime shows of all timeMost of the genre tropes are shoved aside too, with audiences being spared of the usually know-how-it-ends chase scenes and excessive love stories revolving around officers.

The Grand Tour (2016 – Present)

Joker1337 has but one favorite, declaring, ” The Grand Tour is the only Amazon original program I care about.” The motoring series follows the famous trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May (all formerly of Top Gear) as they review cars, tour the world and crack plenty of jokes while at it.

Born out of unfortunate circumstances, The Grand Tour has turned out to be one of the biggest blessings for the streaming service. Having been fired from BBC after punching a producer, Amazon gladly tasked Jeremy Clarkson and co-hosts with literally recreating Top Gear. However, The Grand Tour isn’t an exact clone of the long-running BBC show. At the moment, it does focus on tours rather than studio segments. The cars being reviewed are much cooler too, thanks to the big budgets.

Jack Ryan (2018 – Present)

Rswany adores the Tom Clancy adaptation, describing it as “a guilty pleasure.” The show follows a CIA analyst who is forced to go on the field, where he proves to be an even better agent.

The Redditor isn’t exactly in their description since guilty pleasure shows tend to have bad reviews from critics even though they are adored by fans. Jack Ryan, on the other hand, has a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score. That’s strong enough to make it one of the best spy TV shows to come out in recent years. And part of that has to do with the color-rich cinematography (it’s a Michael Bay production after all) and the impressive character development.

The Expanse (2015 – 2022)

Set many centuries into the future, the space drama explores a universe where humans have colonized most of the solar system and Mars is now a major military power. Kittemilk recommends it, writing, “The Expanse for sure. Best sci-fi on television.”

The Expanse is perhaps too smart but that’s what makes it addictive viewing. It’s packed with multiple little details that require a keen mind to follow, and they all help push the larger narratives of interstellar politics and space warfare. The series is a visual feast too as there is no shortage of CGI awesomeness.

Patriot (2015 – 2018)

Redditor toddphonic says “Patriot is brilliant and deserves so much more attention.” The comedy-drama follows an intelligence officer tasked with preventing Iran from building nuclear weapons.

Espionage shows rarely resist the temptation to go the guns and explosions route but here, it’s made clear from the start that the protagonist is nothing like James Bond. He is more of an ordinary person and his experiences are hilarious. Fans who also enjoy storylines about cops and agents going undercover will enjoy Patriot too.

Invincible (2021 – Present)

Like The Boys, the animated series Invincible is yet another offering that explores corrupt heroes. Redditor tylertompkins1995 finds it awesome, adding, “This is coming from someone who doesn’t watch many animated shows.”

Multiple things make Invincible a great show but the voice cast deserves the biggest credit. J. K. Simmons is best known for terrorizing Peter Parker but he does make Omni-Man seem very menacing whenever he speaks. There’s Sandra Oh and Mark Hamil too among others. Moreover, the writers of Invincible know how to surprise viewers by throwing in gore and cruelty just as the usual, family-friendly superhero proceedings are unfolding.

ZeroZeroZero (2020)

Ylyb09 calls ZeroZeroZero amazing, adding: “It has such great music and atmosphere.” The crime drama revolves around the wealthy owners of a shipping company that secretly transports cocaine from Mexico to Italy.

Fans looking for drug-themed shows like Narcos will find this a worthy alternative. The action sequences are longer and bloodier, highlighting the brutality of the drug trade in the process. The series skillfully marries family drama with crime, resulting in very addictive viewing.

Red Oaks (2015 – 2017)

A college student begins working at a Jewish country club during the summer holidays but finds himself in relationship drama. Redditor arthurbang gives it the top spot, stating, “Red Oaks is hands down my favorite Amazon original.”

Since it’s set in the ’80s. the comedy show graciously takes viewers on a nostalgia trip by incorporating almost everything that made the decade iconic. The cinematography is applause-worthy too. Everything is infused with as much color as possible. And even though events can be a little slow at times, the payoff is usually worth it in the end.

Mozart In The Jungle (2014 – 2018)

The show follows the lives of orchestra musicians in New York. User tablair highly recommends, confessing “very few series have made me smile anywhere near the amount I do when I watch that show.”

Since Mozart In The Jungle deeply sinks into the musical genre it explores, it might be hard for everyone to find it interesting but those willing to invest their time are unlikely to regret it. No character is ignored, each having as deep an arc as possible. The song choices used are quite beautiful too.
