The 2010s have brought some fantastic movie adaptations. From Life of Pi to Call Me By Your Name, the prior decade gave us some of the most memorable movie adaptations of all time, with many winning several Acadamy Awards. The past decade saw huge successes in adapting movies, whether it be from novels, comic books, or even video games.

After the success of Tomb Raider and Detective Pikachu, we can hold out hope that this current decade will give us even more adaptations of our favorite books, games, or comic books. This article will list 10 movie adaptations we want to see this decade.

10 The Odyssey

Despite the fact that it is one of the most famous and influential Greek myths of all time, the Odyssey has been criminally excluded from modern Hollywood adaptations. While its prequel, the Illiad, has received countless adaptations, including 2004’s TroyThe Odyssey has been excluded.

For those who are unaware, the Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus who tries to return home to Ithaca after 10 years of fighting in the Trojan War. The hero must use his wits to navigate around a Cyclops, horrifying sea creatures, and seductive witches.

9 The Song Of Achilles

Madeline Miller’s debut novel the Song of Achilles was a literary marvel. The novel told retold the story of the Illiad, yet focussed on the love story between Achilles and Patroclus. The story is a heartbreaking, exciting, and deeply emotional story of the love between one man and a semi-invulnerable demi-god.

The story is notably different from other adaptions of the Illiad, not only due to the LGBT focus but also due to the fact it follows Achilles and Patroclus through childhood and into adulthood, making it a unique take on the famous characters.

8 Batman Beyond

Batman Beyond is one of the most iconic and enjoyable Batman adaptations of the past few decades. Taking place in a futuristic Gotham in which Bruce Wayne has retired as Batman, the story follows Terry McGinnis as he becomes embroiled in events that lead to him taking on the mantle of Batman of the Future.

Fans have been clamoring for a Batman Beyond adaptation, whether it be live-action or a new TV series since the show came to a premature end in the early 2000s. More specifically, there is an interesting desire to have Michael Keaton return as Bruce Wayne in a Batman Beyond movie.

7 The Adventures of Kavalier And Clay

The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay has been an ‘almost movie’ for almost 2 decades. The movie rights for the property were bought by Paramount Pictures before the novel had even been published. However, despite this, the movie has been stuck in the pre-production stage for decades, with Natalie Portman’s name being frequently mentioned to play the part of Rosa.

The novel tells the story of Josef Kavalier, a Jewish refugee who moves to America in 1939 to escape the Nazis, and how he and his cousin, Sammy Klayman, start writing their own comic books in the Golden Age of the Genre. The story is funny, beautiful, and poignant; it would make an incredible movie.

6 Uprooted

Uprooted was one of the most successful fantasy novels of recent years. Written by Noami Novik, Uprooted tells the story of a young girl named Agnieszka who is selected by the local Wizard, named the Dragon, as payment for protecting the local village.

An Uprooted film is already being discussed in Hollywood. Warner Bros has purchased the rights to the film and Ellen DeGeneres is set to produce the movie.

5 Saga

The writers of the comic series, Britan K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples have said several times that a film or television adaptation of Saga is not their priority. It was conceived of like a comic book series and was written in such a way that several elements of the story would be difficult to adapt. That being said, Saga, if done well, would make an incredible film.

The comic series is a space opera that tells the tale of Alana and Marko as they try and flee the war that has been raging between their respective races while caring for their daughter.

4 Tuf Voyaging

While George RR Martin will always be known for his work on a Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones respectively, his work on Tuf Voyaging certainly deserves an adaption. The story tells the tale of Haviland Tuf, a space trader who loves cats, who finds an ancient spacecraft with highly advanced technology capable of creating plagues or transforming planets into habitable vistas.

Aside from the excitement and aliens, we expect from the science fiction genre, the stories of Haviland Tuf are moral parables that echo issues in our own world, from environmental destruction and climate change to overpopulation.

3 Kafka On The Shore

Kafka on the Shore is one of Haruki Murakami’s most well-loved and well-received books, with the English version of the novel winning the World Fantasy Award in 2006. The novel has two separate yet connected plots that run in alternating chapters throughout the book, with the odd-numbered chapters focussing on Kafka, a 15-year-old boy’s story, and the even-numbered chapters focussing on Nakata’s story.

The book received critical acclaim upon its release due to the mindbending and compelling plot, as well as the typical Murakami trademarks that make his novels so amazing.

2 God Of War

God of War was one of the most successful video games of 2018, with the video game acting as a kind of soft reboot to the God of War franchise, moving the character away from Ancient Greece and giving him a son to care for. It is upon this story that a movie adaptation would take place, largely due to the depth in character they gave Kratos in this installment.

While video games have historically been difficult to adapt into movies, the trend appears to have been broken of late with Detective Pikachu, Sonic, and Tomb Raider all receiving warm reviews.

1 Booster Gold

Booster Gold is one of the most underrated characters in the DC Universe. The character is a time traveler from the future who uses his knowledge of the future for fame and fortune, but ultimately, after years of Booster Gold stories, the character has become more heroic in both action and personality.

The Booster Gold character has appeared on screen before, most notably in the Justice League cartoon of the early 2000s. The success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has shown that there is no reason why a slightly strange, cosmic superhero movie can’t attract modern audiences.
