In 2015, film director Guy Ritchie brought the classic spy television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to the big screen with some serious swagger. The movie starred Henry Cavill (Superman) and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) as a CIA agent and a KGB operative who reluctantly team up to steal research from a supposed Nazi scientist.

What resulted was a movie that just oozed coolness, with great performances all around and some spectacular set pieces, although some critics claimed the story was uneven. However, its style helped overshadow that fact. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ended up as a box office flop but gained a cult following since its release.

10 Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

While most comic book movies focused on superheroes saving the world, Kingsman: The Secret Service told a different kind of story. Based on the comics by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons and directed by Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class), this was a story of a super-secret British spy organization that saved the world without anyone knowing they exist.

It plays out as an almost uber-violent and stylized James Bond world where anything can and does happen. A Kingsman sequel arrived in 2017, with a third movie hitting theaters in 2021.

9 Atomic Blonde (2017)

Some critical labeled Atomic Blonde a female version of John Wick, but it shares more in common with spy movies than hitmen movies. Charlize Theron plays Lorraine Broughton, a top-level MI6 spy sent out to find a list of double agents around the world.

The film takes place on the night before the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The comparison to John Wick is based on the vibrant look and the ultra-violent fights.

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt and is sent on a new mission, but this time around, he has to take a CIA assassin named Walker (Cavill). The action in this Mission: Impossible movie surpasses everything that came before, and director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise have proven to be a perfect match.

2 Get Smart (2008)

Another movie based on a classic spy television series hit in 2008 is Get Smart. While this TV series shared many similarities to The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the main difference was that Get Smart was a Mel Brooks’ spoof, poking fun at the James Bond franchise.

Steve Carell starred as Maxwell Smart, an analyst for CONTROL who wants to be a field agent. He ends up getting the chance but is bumbling and clueless, often needing to be saved by Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). Dwayne Johnson also has an early movie role as Agent 23.
