The Sixth Sense has used the trope “dead people visions” in a way that’s near perfect with a twist that is still remembered as one of the best. A child psychologist comes in to help an eight year old boy who sees dead people. Since the huge success of The Sixth Sense, several filmmakers have attempted to exploit the trope.

Although it would be hard to recreate what Shyamalan did in his movie, some did deliver films which could be called ‘movies similar to the The Sixth Sense.’ Here is a list of ten movies to watch for people who loved The Sixth Sense.

10 The Others (2001)

The Others is the story of a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children. She later suspects that her house is haunted and she must protect her children.

The movie belongs more to the horror genre but with the involvement of dead people in a protagonist’s life and a very surprising twist ending, fans of The Sixth Sense will like this one.

9 The Village (2004)

Story of The Village is based on a small deserted town in Pennsylvania. Its resident to do not cross the boundaries of the village or the evil entities beyond the boundaries will come for them. However, Ivy violates these rules to save Lucius, the love of her life.

It’s a Shyamalan movie, so the much anticipated plot twists were present. It ends up stirring similar emotions in the audience as The Sixth Sense.

7 The Mist (2007)

It does not compare with the genius of The Sixth Sense however, the ending of the movie is disturbing as the palpable tension, paranoia, and horror culminates into a distressing climax.

6 Shutter Island (2010)

A U.S. Marshal, Teddy, comes to Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital, a hospital for criminally insane. Under a sinister plot of the doctors, he is assigned to investigate disappearance of a patient. With unveiling of dark secrets of the hospital and his own life, Teddy begins doubting everything around him, including his sanity.

Both the movies revolve around men who have sought to uncover a mystery that are unknowingly linked to them and are revealed through jaw-dropping twists.

5 The Orphanage (2007)

In The Orphanage, a woman along with her family returns to the orphanage for handicapped children which was her childhood home. Then her son starts communicating with an apparition which leads to some harrowing consequences.

Again, both the movies put young boys in center who can talk to ghosts and the story builds from there. Both the movies offer generous thrilling moments with right amount of drama.

4 Don’t Look Now (1973)

A couple who recently lost their daughter are in Venice and meet two sisters. One of the sisters is a psychic and claims to be seeing their daughter’s spirit. 3 Memento (2000)

Memento is the story of Leonard who suffers a rare kind of memory loss and can’t remember anything beyond fifteen minutes. He is on a mission to find his wife’s killer, which is the last thing he recollects.

The Sixth Sense exhibits brilliance in almost every area of film-making, so if one is a fan of the movie mainly because of that mind boggling plot twist, then Memento is the perfect choice to be picked up next.

2 Donnie Darko (2001)

A teenager escapes a lethal accident and then a man in rabbit suit starts following him around. The eerily-suited man seems to control the teenager’s thoughts and makes him commit several crimes.

Both the movies include protagonists who see things others around them can’t. The Sixth Sense offers an explanation at the end while Donnie Darko leaves it for a viewer’s interpretation.

1 Jacob’s Ladder (1990)

Jacob is Vietnam War veteran who is grieving the loss of his child and his wife has left him. He aims to find out about his past but has been experiencing dissociation. He struggles to distinguish between reality and delusions.

Both movies have an ending that turns everything upside down. Other than that, both of them have middle-aged men who have started experiencing unnatural phenomena that they are unable to decipher themselves.
