10 Movies To Watch If You Liked Greenland

Greenland is a disaster/adventure film that does it right, with potent suspense, fierce combat sequences, and dazzling shots of destruction generated with CGI. Gerard Butler heads a strong cast whose acting is on-point, refraining from hampering the cinematic illusion with convincing passion and hysteria.

The 2020 movie also did fairly well in critics’ eyes, earning a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, and becoming one of the most well-reviewed disaster movies of recent years, especially in relation to Butler’s previous disaster blockbuster, Geostorm.

The end of the world has already come and gone in this adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name. The father and son that the story follows are simply trying to survive day to day throughout, making it a much harsher experience than Greenland but a deeply rewarding one also.

The Road is one of the most well-acted end-of-the-world movies ever made, and it has plenty of nail-biting survival sequences amongst its unforgettable dramatic scenes.

9 Signs (2002)

Fathers struggling to feel like they can protect their families during a time of great crisis is a common theme in disaster movies and M. Night Shyamalan’s take on an alien invasion story is one of the most dramatically driven ever made.

The film is set mostly on an isolated farm and follows a former priest as he steadily begins to notice unavoidable signs of an impending otherworldly event which causes him to agonize over his ability to protect his children from unforeseeable and unstoppable forces. The overall pedigree of the performances makes Signs a must-see movie for fans of Greenland‘s most emotional moments.

8 War Of The Worlds (2005)

Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi/action adaptation of War of the Worlds brings a fleet of gargantuan weapons made with alien technology to the New Jersey/New York area. Tom Cruise stars in the film as a father who is willing to do anything to protect his two children.

While waves of humans are wiped out, audiences never get an explanation as to who the aliens are or what planet they’re from, and there is a scarcity of images of the alien creatures, and the feelings of confusion and powerlessness tapped into the most significant themes of author H.G. Wells’s original story.

7 Deep Impact (1998)

Deep Impact is another one of the many great movies that have been made about the premise of a doomsday scenario involving an asteroid heading to strike the Earth in an extinction-level event.

In the history of ’90s disaster films, it’s been largely overshadowed by the success of Michael Bay’s Armageddon, which has a very similar core premise and premiered less than two months after Deep Impact. Director Mimi Leder’s apocalypse movie is, however, much more of an emotional drama and often explores the idea in a much more grounded way like Greenland, as it follows multiple storylines and perspectives rather than just one.

6 Deepwater Horizon (2016)

Based on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill of 2010, this action-thriller from director Peter Berg recounts the decisions, people, and processes that caused the environmental calamity. Mark Wahlberg stars as chief electronics technician Mike Williams, who survived the explosion.

Deepwater Horizon is a fantastic historical portrait, accentuated by a star-studded cast including Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, and Kate Hudson.

5 The Belko Experiment (2016)

The Belko Experiment goes a few levels above Greenland in terms of violence and blood, but the situation into which its characters are plunged should appeal to any fan of disaster movies. The horror-thriller is set up like a battle royale when an automated voice comes over the speaker system in a work building, requiring employees to kill multiple co-workers in order to ensure their survival.

The movie’s hysteria and chaos should be right up a Greenland fan’s alley, although it doesn’t impact a viewer’s emotional side to the same extent.

4 The Finest Hours (2016)

Chris Pine stars in this rescue-expedition movie based on true events occurring in 1952. The SS Pendelton was significantly damaged by a massive storm at sea and a four-man crew is given the responsibility of rescuing surviving sailors. The movie boasts a great cast including big names, such as Casey Affleck and Eric Bana.

Not all critics were on board with the Disney-produced adventure. Still, its historical detail and pulse-pounding survival sequences are worth a Greenland fan’s consideration.

3 #Alive (2020)

#Alive is a South Korean zombie thriller drama and director Il Cho’s feature-length debut. Audiences enter the apartment buildings of Seoul as a few neighboring individuals remain uninfected by the plague that’s turning people into the high-speed type of zombie. Survivors are eventually forced to post to social media in order to connect with emergency services.

#Alive is definitely an adrenaline-filled picture, but being a zombie movie, it consists of more gory and gritty sequences than Greenland ever has.

2 The Mountain Between Us (2017)

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet star in this survival tale about two strangers who find themselves stranded in the snowy mountains of Utah with no clear route to salvation. They push each other to live as they travel through perilous weather and all sorts of adversity, such as an attack by a mountain lion.

The Mountain Between Us doesn’t feature many other actors than Winslet or Elba but, with their talents, it never needs to. The acting makes the movie recommended for fans of Greenland‘s dramatic survival aspects.

1 The Crazies (2010)

● Available on Tubi, Vudu, Hulu, and Prime Video

The 2010 production is a reboot of the 1973 horror movie of the same name. Although critics weren’t necessarily in love with director Breck Eisner’s modern attempt, the new addition was packed with great performances, enhanced pyrotechnics, makeup, and similar theatrical appeals as well as spine-chilling sequences of terror that horror fans loved.

The Crazies is in line with Greenland because of its apocalyptic premise, and like Gerard Butler, Timothy Olyphant is a stellar leading hero. However, the horror/thriller may not be as versatile in terms of applicable age groups.
