Believe it or not, the 2016 comedy film, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, is based on a true story. In terms of true story films, Mike and Dave doesn’t quite rank alongside films like Munich or Dog Day Afternoon, but it’s also not trying to be. It’s just a fun comedy starring Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, and Adam DeVine.

It also happens to be one of the premiere wedding comedies of the past five years. The wedding comedy genre has been shifting towards the small screen, but Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates made the case for the film on the big screen back when it came out. If this Jake Szymanski film worked for certain audiences, then they’d definitely appreciate these films, too.

10 Tag

Like Mike and Dave Need Wedding DatesTag is a movie that many would not expect to be based on a true story. Yet, the concept of a group of adult friends playing a global game of tag with one another is based on a real instance!

Sometimes, the most fun studio comedies are the ones based on ludicrous ideas that somehow end up being non-fiction. However, Tag also bears the similarity of adults who have to learn to mature without losing their childlike sensibilities.

9 Sisters

This sense of maturation in tandem with youthful spirits is also present within Sisters, the party comedy from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It remains one of the more underrated comedies of the 2010s.

Fey and Poehler are hilarious, just like Efron, Kendrick, and Plaza. Comedies with likable stars go a long way on the big screen and Sisters is the type that just plays better while laughing along with an audience.

8 Palm Springs

Hopefully, 2020 might mark the beginning of a wedding comedy renaissance that works on a more solid level than Mike and Dave managed to. That’s thanks to festival hit turned Hulu sensation, Palm Springs.

Like Mike and DavePalm Springs is about guests at a wedding who unexpectedly fall in love with one another. However, Palm Springs is definitely not based on a true story with its thrust of Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti into the sci-fi genre.

7 Blended

Speaking of people who unexpectedly fall in love while on a getaway, Blended might be one of the more criminally overlooked examples of that story. It’s the 2014 rom-com between Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler.

Barrymore and Sandler’s trilogy of rom-coms is the sweetest side of either of their careers and hope remains that they’ll reunite again in 2024. However, it is most similar to Mike and Dave for its broad appeal and its undercurrent of wholesomeness.

6 Crazy Rich Asians

Returning to the wedding side of things, Crazy Rich Asians was an absolute smash hit when it debuted back in 2018 from a creative team of Jon M. Chu, Peter Chiarelli, and Adele Lim. It was a romantic phenomenon at the theaters, similar to how My Big Fat Greek Wedding was met by audiences.

It also launched the star personas of both Constance Wu and Henry Golding. While Mike and Dave played on actors we already knew, Crazy Rich Asians managed to introduce the world to two charming leads. That makes for an excellent marriage-based compendium.

5 Pitch Perfect

If the actors are what one loved about Mike and Dave, rather than the romance or the wedding setting, then Pitch Perfect should definitely be on their radar. It may be a musical, but it also stars Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine.

Kendrick definitely leads the way in Pitch Perfect. She always manages to be the scene-stealer of any film she’s cast in, but Pitch Perfect allows her to be the lead.

4 The Greatest Showman

Speaking of musicals that star actors from Mike and DaveThe Greatest Showman is a must-watch for anyone who came to the Zac Efron comedy for the actor himself.

He started out in High School Musical and grew his acting and singing chops from there. The Greatest Showman was an epic display of his talents that came out a year after Mike and Dave. If one loved the wedding comedy, they’ll love the musical extravaganza.

3 Neighbors

However, if one is more inclined to see more Zac Efron performances that are distinctly comedic, then his breakout return to the big screen in 2014’s Neighbors is the way to go.

Starring opposite Seth Rogen, Efron proved himself able to star in a fraternity/party comedy, just as he would go on to prove his wedding chops. Sometimes, though, it’s just fun to watch Zac Efron crack jokes.

2 The Five-Year Engagement

The Five-Year Engagement, from the creative team of Rodney Rothman, Nicholas Stoller, and Judd Apatow, is one of the closest comparisons in the world to Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. This rom-com stars a quartet of Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, and Alison Brie, which might even top the Mike and Dave foursome.

However, it’s also about what can go wrong in terms of weddings and engagements. It’s a bit longer and more interested in meandering through thematic territory, but still scratches a similar itch to Mike and Dave.

1 Wedding Crashers

Lastly, there is the quintessential wedding comedy, Wedding Crashers. What sets this 2005 comedy apart from all else on the list, though, is that the Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson pairing is similarly disaffected by romance at first. Just like Efron and DeVine!

Wedding Crashers is a must-watch if one loves Mike and Dave because the sensibility could not be more similar. It also features a slew of supporting turns that demolish the screen, like Bradley Cooper, Isla Fisher, and Will Ferrell. The world needs more wedding comedies!
