ABC’s new family drama, Promised Land, has received great reviews from critics so far. Its Rotten Tomatoes score is an impressive 100% at the moment and by watching, it’s easy to see why. The series not only weaves the important themes of disparity and immigration into its solid plot but also packs in plenty of intriguing characters.

Since only a few of the cast members can be considered major stars in the US, fans might be wondering where else they have seen the rest. After all, a good number of the faces do seem familiar. Well, most of them have been part of some of the popular movie and TV projects to come out in recent years.

10 John Oritz – Fast & Furious Franchise (2001 – Present)

Ortiz plays Joe Sandoval, the Heritage House Vineyards owner, and Sandoval family patriarch on the show. Sandoval tries hard to juggle between business-related conflicts and disputes in his own family.

Ortiz has had supporting roles in a number of blockbusters but his most memorable one is that of Arturo Braga, one of the wealthiest villains in the Fast & Furious franchise. There are parallels between the two characters, in that they are not only of Latinx origin but also happen to have millions of dollars at their disposal. However, one is extremely evil while the other’s actions are regulated by his conscience.

9 Bellamy Young – Scandal (2012 – 2018)

Young gives an incredible performance as Margaret Honeycroft, Joe Sandoval’s sly and vindictive ex-wife. Margaret is more than happy to pile more misery on the family whenever she gets the opportunity to do so.

Young’s TV resume is long but she is best known for playing First Lady Mellie Grant in Scandal, one of the best Shondaland shows. Despite Mellie being a more powerful character, she is nicer and is the one who has to deal with her partner’s problematic behavior. In her new role, she comfortably sits in the hall of antagonists.

8 Cecilia Suárez – Sense 8 (2015 – 2018)

Suárez is Lettie, the second wife of Sandoval. She tries to help him deal with the family side of things as he does his best to make sure the business doesn’t fall apart.

Most of Suárez’s roles have been in Mexican movies but she has left a lasting impression n the few American productions she has been a part of. She plays the manager of actor Lito Rodriguez in Sense 8. Later in her career, the actress has mostly taken up roles where she is somewhat of a leader. The two roles where she is a matriarch and a manager hence fall within her domain.

7 Augusto Aguilera – Grey’s Anatomy (2005 – Present)

Augusto plays Mateo Flores, Lettie’s son who she shares with her ex-husband. Additionally, Mateo is the manager of Heritage House Vineyards.

Fans might recognize Augusto as Mr. Endris, the father of Gus from Grey’s Anatomy who is in desperate need of a heart transplant. There is a major contrast between the two characters since Mateo is living a comfortable life as part of a wealthy family while Endris is desperate and hopeless until help comes when he least expects it.

6 Christina Ochoa – Animal Kingdom (2018 – Present)

Ochoa stars as Joe’s daughter Veronica Sandoval who gets appointed as the new CEO of the family company. During her time at the helm, she attempts to overhaul various policies.

The actress is best known for her role as cocaine distributor Renn Randal in Animal Kingdom, one of the best TNT shows of all time. There is a huge gulf in class between Veronica, and Renn, who isn’t doing well in her criminal life. Ochoa is presumably more comfortably playing Veronica since, in real life, she also has a wealthy father, the renowned Spanish architect, and sculptor, Victor Ochoa.

5 Mariel Molino – Narcos: Mexico (2018 – 2021)

Actor Mariel Molino has a recurring role as Carmen Sandoval, the youngest among the Sandoval siblings. Amidst the chaos, she tries to be relevant in the family.

Promised Land is Molino’s first foray into mainstream American TV. She had previously focussed her efforts on Mexican, Spanish-language dramas, though she also had a minor role in the third season Narcos: Mexico as an unnamed nurse. Her role on the ABC show is still a minor one but it’s an improvement because she is granted better character development.

4 Tom Amandes – Arrow (2012 – 2020)

Amandes appears on the show as Margaret’s current husband O.M. Honeycroft. A reserved person, O.M. gets caught in the drama surrounding his wife and her ex-husband.

The actor’s face is a familiar one. He appears in the fourth and sixth seasons of Arrow as the cyberterrorist Noah Kuttle, aka, The Calculator. Amandes could also be considered the undisputed king of one-shot appearances. He has appeared in only a single episode of 42 different shows throughout his career.

3 Julio Macias – On My Block (2018 – 2021)

Macias portrays Javier, one of the immigrant vineyard workers who find himself in conflict with his employers. The character is a minor one but recurs throughout the season.

The actor’s biggest role is that of Santos gang leader Oscar Diaz in On My Block. Though Macias isn’t an experienced actor (he had his first-ever role in 2016), he hasn’t been disappointing in the few roles he has been granted. Proof of his superior acting abilities can be seen from the two Imagen Award nominations he has received so far.

2 Yul Vazquez – Narcos: Mexico (2018 – 2021)

Vazquez is Joe’s brother, Father Ramos. Though the priest seems like an upstanding citizen at first, he is revealed to have several skeletons in his closet.

Vazquez has been typecast as people in positions of authority for most of his career. In Narcos: Mexico, Vazquez is John Gavin, the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico who helps push the war on drugs but proves to be a bureaucratical obstacle in the DEA’s efforts to bring down the Guadalajara cartel. This isn’t the first time Vasquez has been cast as a priest. He also played a similar role in the horror series, Midnight, Texas.

1 Andres Velez – Coyote Lake (2019)

Velez has a main role as Carlos Rincón, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who enters the United States illegally in 1987 to work at Heritage House Vineyards. Thanks to fake papers, he is able to adopt the identity, Joe Sandoval.

The actor’s most notable role is that of Vince in the psychological thriller, Coyote Lake. His character gets caught up in a mystery surrounding a mother and daughter who murder guests at their guest house. Velez’s role as Carlos Rincón is his first major one and given his impressive performances so far, fans will hope that he becomes a breakout star in the TV scenes.
