2021 has been a stacked year for movies, as it saw the release of films that were not only planned to be released in the year but also those that were delayed from 2020 due to the pandemic. However, in the bit of time that’s left of the year, there are still tons of movies scheduled to come out.

The upcoming releases for blockbuster surefire hits like No Time To Die, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and many others are well known, but other 2021 movie releases have gone under the radar. Between a Resident Evil reboot, two Bradley Cooper-led dramas, and an Edgar Wright-directed psychological horror, there are tons of exciting releases still to come.

10 Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City (Release Date: November 24, 2021)

Up to this point, there have been six Resident Evil movies and they have all been extremely successful at the box office, with the series being one of the highest-grossing horror movie franchises of all time. And because of its success and the fact that the last movie was titled The Final Chapter, it was only a matter of time before the series would see a reboot.

The premise of the upcoming movie sounds extremely similar to the very first Resident Evil movie. However, as director Johannes Roberts has a rich background in horror, the movie could be a lot scarier compared to the more action-oriented Paul W.S. Anderson-directed movies. Roberts even expressed in an interview with IGN that the movie will have a much darker tone.

9 The French Dispatch (Release Date: October 22, 2021)

Wes Anderson is one of the most beloved auteurs of this generation. His perfectly symmetrical shots, quirky characters, and use of decades-old pop music are irresistible to cinephiles, and The French Dispatch is shaping up to be the most typical Wes Anderson movie yet.

The movie is an ode to journalists and an anthology movie about a french publication loosely based on The New Yorker. What’s more, is that while Anderson loves to work with the same cast, and The French Dispatch does feature many of Wes Anderson’s recurring collaborators, there are some new faces on the roster. Bill Murray and Owen Wilson expectedly show up, but the film also stars Timothee Chalamet, one of the most exciting young actors working today.

8 Halloween Kills (Release Date: October 15, 2021)

After Halloween was rebooted for the second time in 2018 and became the highest-grossing movie of the entire series, it was only a matter of time until a follow-up was going to arrive. The horror franchise has had a long history, but it’s the first time in a long while that the series is seeing success.

Just like its predecessor, Halloween Kills sees Jamie Lee Curtis back in the fold, along with her Halloween costar, Judy Greer. Halloween Kills is interesting because it’s the second movie of a trilogy and will directly lead into the next sequel, Halloween Ends. The third movie is already in production and is due for release just one year later.

7 Army Of Thieves (Release Date: October 29, 2021)

Army of Thieves is an upcoming Netflix movie and prequel to Army of the Dead, as it follows Ludwig in his formative years of safecracking. There was a rapid turnaround between the zombie movie and Army of Thieves, as the former was released just a few short months ago.

However, though Army of Thieves is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s passion project, viewers could easily mistake them for being completely unrelated. Even the genre of the prequel is entirely different, as the film is a romantic comedy more than it is a zombie-heist movie.

6 Soggy Bottom (Release Date: November 26, 2021)

Director Paul Thomas Anderson hasn’t put a foot out of line ever since he began his career with the underrated crime drama Hard Eight. Ever since then he has made one period epic after the next, and Soggy Bottom is no different. Just as he did so well with Boogie Nights and Inherent Vice, Soggy Bottom sees Anderson returning to what seems to be his favorite decade, the 70s.

Not much is known about Soggy Bottom, and there isn’t even a trailer yet, despite its imminent November release, but the movie follows a high school student attempting to become an actor in the decade of disco. Anderson is known for getting terrific work out of his actors, and he got a great dramatic performance from Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love. But what’s notable about Soggy Bottom is that along with Bradley Cooper, it stars newcomer Cooper Hoffman, the son of the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was a frequent collaborator of Anderson’s.

5 Don’t Look Up (Release Date: December 10, 2021)

Though some of director Adam McKay’s best movies include comedy films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Step Brothers, he eventually transitioned into biographical dramas with The Big Short and Vice.

Now, McKay is reinventing himself once again, as the upcoming Don’t Look Up is a sci-fi movie about astronomers who learn that an asteroid will destroy Earth. It’ll see Leonardo DiCaprio in his first role since Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and more interestingly, he’ll be acting alongside Jennifer Lawrence.

4 Red Notice (Release Date: November 12, 2021)

A “red notice” is a global alert that is issued by Interpol, and that’s exactly what the movie is about. It sees Dwayne Johnson in one of his rare serious roles, as he plays an Interpol agent chasing down two criminals who commit heists. And though that synopsis sounds a lot like Fast Five, the tone of Red Notice will be a lot darker.

However, though the movie sounds thrilling, the big appeal of the Netflix release is the star power behind it. Along with Johnson, the movie will include Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot.

3 Nightmare Alley (Release Date: December 3, 2021)

There are loads of great monster movie directors, but the elder statesman of them all has to be Guillermo Del Toro. The filmmaker was the creator of The Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, all of the creatures in Hellboy, and The Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water.

But in the coming months, Del Toro will delve into unknown territory with Nightmare Alley, as it’s a neo-noir movie about a manipulative carnie. The movie also has an all-star cast, including Bradley Cooper, and as the latter half of 2021 will see the release of both Soggy Bottom and Nightmare Alley, it’s shaping up to be Cooper’s year.

2 Last Night In Soho (Release Date: October 29, 2021)

Though he found the most success with his last project, the big action movie Baby Driver, which was Edgar Wright’s highest-grossing movie, the director couldn’t have made a bigger left turn. Last Night In Soho is about a fashion designer who is transported back in time to 1966.

The movie marks a first for Wright, as though he directed the hysterical zombie movie Shaun of the Dead, Last Night In Soho is a fully loaded horror movie without a laugh in sight. Not only will the movie be full of jump scares, which will see Wright putting his unique precise camera work to use in fresh new ways, but it’s a psychological horror too.

1 King Richard (Release Date: November 19, 2021)

Will Smith has portrayed real-life people in biopics many times in the past, but it has been six years since his last dramatic role, which was in Concussion. In King Richard, Will Smith plays Richard Williams, the father of two famous tennis players, Venus and Serena Williams.

King Richard is shaping up to be one of the most uplifting movies of the past few years, as the father’s method of raising them was instrumental in the sports athletes’ success. On top of that, it might just be the movie that finally earns Smith an Academy Award.
