Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game series that boasts a variety of many characters, and it’s easily one of video game developer SEGA’s most recognizable franchises. From speedy hedgehogs to evil scientists, there are plenty of recognizable names under the Sonic mantle. Given the age of the property, it’s only natural that the lore would grow to include dozens of relatively obscure side characters.

But, within the massive cast are a few characters that have gone overlooked. Some haven’t been seen in years, and, while several obscure characters have resurfaced in recent years, these ten characters deserve another day in the spotlight.

10 Heavy and Bomb

Heavy and Bomb are two robot mechanics invented by Dr. Robotnik intended to form Robotnik’s Mechanix. During the events of Knuckles Chaotix, the two robots betray Robotnik and join Knuckles, claiming they had escaped. Whether or not they were still working for Robotnik has remained a mystery to this day.

In Knuckles Chaotix, Heavy and Bomb don’t show that much personality. However, two of Doctor Eggman’s robot lackeys, Cubot and Orbot, have become a comic relief duo in their own right. Perhaps SEGA can recreate the same magic with Heavy and Bomb, whether the two are on the good side, or the bad side.

9 Shade the Echidna

Shade the Echidna is the lead member of the Marauders, a long-lost nation of echidnas that serve Imperior Ix. When Ix gives out his plan to conquer the earth, Shade defects from the Marauders and joins Sonic’s side. She only has one goal in mind, that being to bring her clan back to their homeworld.

There is only one prominent echidna in the Sonic series, and that is none other than Knuckles. However, it wouldn’t hurt to bring fellow echidna Shade back into the fold. Sonic Chronicles: The Lost Brotherhood is Shade’s only game appearance, so seeing her appear again would be quite a treat.

8 Fang the Sniper

Originally known as Nack the Weasel outside of Japan, Fang the Sniper is a treasure-hunting weasel wielding a popgun. He’s a dirty gunslinger who seldom plays by the rules and chases after the Chaos Emeralds—but only for profit.

Fang first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble and made subsequent appearances in Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic the Fighters. However, he has been reduced to cameo appearances since then, and his boss fight in Sonic Mania is nothing more than a Heavy Magician illusion. It would be nice to see Fang chasing after Chaos Emeralds again, even if it was only doing it for the money.

7 Marine the Raccoon

Hailing from Blaze the Cat’s dimension, Marine is a perky raccoon with a nose for adventure. Her only major game appearance is in Sonic Rush Adventure in which she helps Sonic and Blaze in their quest to find the Jeweled Scepter.

Ever since Sonic Rush: Adventure, Marine has rarely appeared in future Sonic titles. There is a Mii Costume in her likeness featured in the Mario & Sonic Olympic Games series, and she does appear on some bonus artwork in Sonic Generations. With all of this in mind, another appearance from Marine—a physical appearance, that is—is much overdue.

6 Lumina Flowlight

Lumina Flowlight is a fairy from Maginaryworld, representing the positive aspects of dreams. She is the protector of the Precioustone, which winds up being destroyed by Lumina’s negative counterpart Void. Lumina brings Sonic and friends to Maginaryworld so that the stone could be restored.

Lumina’s only game appearance is in Sonic Shuffle, which was Sega’s first attempt at a Sonic-themed party game. With that in mind, Lumina has shown enough in Shuffle to warrant her another game appearance down the road. The strong similarities to Nights, a heroic jester created by Sega themselves, also help with her appeal.

5 Metal Knuckles

In addition to Metal Sonic, there is another robot that Dr. Robotnik invented, and his name is Metal Knuckles. His design obviously inspired by a certain red echidna, Metal Knuckles shows up in Sonic R and was specifically crafted to stand in Knuckles’ way.

Throughout many games, Metal Sonic has repeatedly antagonized Sonic, becoming the second-biggest villainous threat in the Sonic universe after Dr. Eggman. Metal Knuckles could have the same dynamic with his echidna counterpart, obstructing Knuckles in his adventures rather than just a racing Grand Prix.

4 Bean the Dynamite

Bean the Dynamite is a green woodpecker who first debuted in the unapologetically strange fighting game Sonic the Fighters. A bird with a strong affinity for exploding things, his specialty for fighting involves throwing bombs and using chaos energy. Judging by how fast he moves, one may see that Beans is a very hyperactive fellow.

Being the hyperactive bird that he is, Bean would make for a very welcome addition to the main series’ cast of villains. Joining a cast of evil geniuses and edgy hedgehogs, Bean’s craziness would make him stand out among the others.

3 Bark the Polar Bear

Another character who first debuted in Sonic the Fighters, Bark the Polar Bear is not as fast as Beans. With his bulk, he’s one of the slower characters in the Fighters roster. But, he makes up for his lack of speed with his strength, throwing and flattening his opponents at will.

The Sonic series is no stranger to big guys, with Big the Cat and Vector the Crocodile to name a few. However, the series lacks big guys that have a bit of a villainous edge to them. Bark would most certainly fit the bill, provided that he receives more prominence.

2 Mephiles the Dark

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) may have been poorly received, but Mephiles the Dark is one of the game’s few bright spots. Born from the Solaris project, Mephiles took on the form of Shadow the Hedgehog after being released from the Scepter of Darkness.

Despite being relatively obscure, Mephiles has endeared himself as a fan-favorite among most of the Sonic fanbase. Some like the hedgehog’s scheming, manipulative nature, and he’s likely one of the Sonic universe’s most intelligent villains. Mephiles has appeared as a secret playable character in Sonic Runners, but another mainline game appearance better suits him.

1 Honey the Cat

For some Sonic fans, the design of this obscure character may be very familiar. Honey the Cat is based on Honey, a fashion student and one of the playable fighters in the beginner-friendly Fighting Vipers. This feline has the same poses and moves as the fighter she’s based on, which makes the similarities all the more amusing.

Appearing as a secret playable character in the Sonic the Fighters re-release, Honey looks like she could fit in well with Sonic and the gang. Her presence could bring more prominence to the Fighting Vipers series, which would be a win-win for Sega all-around.
