For some of us, home invasion films are the scariest horror movies out there. Unlike the supernatural, paranormal, and even slasher movies, home invasions are the most realistic scenario out there. Some horror movies work hard to make the setting as true-to-life as possible to make it as freaky as possible.

It can be nerve-wracking to watch a home invasion movie alone, especially at night. How can you not imagine someone breaking into your home in the aftermath? Here are some of the scariest home invasion films ever, make sure you grab a buddy before checking these out.

10 Don’t Breathe

Don’t Breathe is a somewhat unconventional horror film in that it involves teenagers breaking into the home of a blind man. They target him because of his disability, but quickly find that they’re in over their heads.

Once the teens break-in, they can’t get out and they find out the man in question has some sinister secrets of his own. Jane Levy stars and Fede Álvarez directs, which marks their second collaboration after the 2013 Evil Dead remake. Don’t Breathe is extremely nerve-wracking. The movie does a great job of maintaining suspense and it received critical acclaim upon its debut.

9 The Strangers

One of the scariest things about The Strangers, the 2008 slasher/home invasion film, is the killers’ motive. They don’t have one. Instead of going on a murder spree to exact revenge or because they’re ghosts haunting the place, they simply do it because “they were home.”

James Hoyt and Kristen McKay are terrorized in their own home for no discernible reason. The film is a brutal reminder of how cruel random acts of violence can be.

8 Hush

It’s bad enough to imagine someone breaking into your home, it’s even worse to imagine someone breaking in when you are lacking some of your vital senses. Kate Siegel, star of The Haunting of Hill House, leads this terrifying thriller as Maddie Young, a deaf and mute woman. Unable to hear or speak, Maddie is forced to fight for her life by any means necessary when a man breaks into her home wearing a mask.

Even worse, he learns about her disability quite fast when he brutally slaughters one of her friends trying to get into the house and she doesn’t show any reaction. Directed by Mike Flanagan, Hush will leave you with serious chills.

7 Knock Knock

Knock Knock is pretty different tonally from the other movies on this list. It is an erotic-thriller starring Keanu Reeves about a man named Evan Webber whose home is invaded by two women who claim to be looking for the address to a party nearby.

Knock Knock has many satirical and darkly comedic moments but that doesn’t stop it from being scary enough to make a pit form in your stomach. Initially, it looks like Evan is just going to have a fun, sexy, weekend with these two women but things quickly spiral out of control into a fierce torture-horror film.

6 Sleep Tight

Sleep Tight is a Spanish psychological thriller. The main antagonist, César, is fundamentally unable to find happiness. As a way to deal with his bitter existence, he goes out of his way to make everyone around him suffer. Many of the tenants in his apartment complex suffer from his wrath but one woman proves difficult to tear down.

César makes it his mission to psychologically destroy her by any means necessary. Some of the scariest stories and true crime tales are about what happens when someone manages to sneak into your home while you’re asleep. Invasion of your private space is nightmare fuel for most of us.

5 Mother!

Jennifer Lawrence gives an incredible performance in this polarizing Darren Aronofsky film. The movie has divided critics. Some believe the film is brilliant while others found it too disturbing and pointless. Either way, it is harrowing and the sound editing is superb.

4 The Last House on the Left

The Last House on the Left was originally released in 1972 but there is also a 2009 remake that more people tend to be familiar with. Wes Craven directed the original movie and returned as a producer on the remake.

It begins with the horrific rape of a young woman who is then left for dead. The group of rogues who were responsible for the hideous act takes shelter at a nearby home during a bad storm. Come to find out they chose the girl’s family home unknowingly. A violent game of cat-and-mouse ensues between the two parties.

3 Inside

Inside is a 2007 French horror movie part of the “new wave” of French extremist horror, similar to Raw. The movie is about a pregnant woman who is trying to fend off an attacker after they break into her home to steal her unborn child.

It’s unrelenting and extremely brutal, certainly not a film for the faint of heart and probably not something you want to watch all alone at night.

2 Silent House

While most of us know Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she was something of an indie darling before becoming a superhero. She starred in Silent House, a psychological horror film known for its feat in technical filmmaking.

The entire movie was created in one single continuous shot. Olsen plays Sarah, a young woman who becomes trapped inside of her own home as her family is terrorized by a group of home invaders.

1 The Collector

You shouldn’t break into anyone’s house for a number of reasons. It’s illegal. It’s morally wrong. You might break into the home already being invaded by a sadistic sociopath who sets crazy Jigsaw-like traps all over his house. That’s what happens to Arkin O’Brien in The Collector.

He tries to steal from a safe to help his wife pay her debts and discovers the collector is present. He likes to collect people, one from each household and does so in hideous and horrifying ways. If you’re a fan of blood, gore, and torture, look no further than The Collector and you can follow it up with The Collection too.
