If splitting hairs, what constitutes a show as supernatural versus fantasy? Many can argue that the supernatural is a subgenre of fantasy. Others can say that fantasy involves the general public being aware of or living in a world of fantasy. While others say the supernatural involves werewolves, vampires or demons that lurk in secret.

Regardless both genres revolve around creatures of characters that aren’t necessarily considered human or are otherworldly in nature. 10 Charmed (2019)

The famous cult classic show, Charmed got a reboot in 2019. Old and new fans will still get to enjoy what the show was famous for in terms of storyline. The Charmed Ones discover they have magical powers after the tragic death of their mother.

Not only does the show have powerful magic but also the demonic. The three sisters use their magic to destroy and defeat evil in the forms of demons. All while keeping mundane humans oblivious to their existence and the world of magic.

9 Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)

Penny Dreadful gained a fanbase for its dark and gritty portrayal of the supernatural and characters from popular gothic characters. The show’s name is from a type of 19th-century British fiction with characters including Dracula, Frankenstein, his monster and Jekyll and Hyde.

The show brings the origin stories of the creatures that lurk in the dark to light. Taking place in Victorian London, an explorer teams up with a clairvoyant to locate his daughter and kill these famous monsters. The stories used to create an eery psychological thriller story.

8 Warrior Nun (2020)

Netflix released a new original series in 2020 titled Warrior Nun. The show’s story has an interesting twist on the supernatural especially when it comes to secret orders and the inclusion of the Catholic church.  An orphaned girl wakes up from the dead with supernatural powers.

7 The Haunting Of Hill House (2018)

Get ready for some chilling and spooktacular episodes in The Haunting of Hill House. The show debuted in 2018 and is a supernatural horror that gives anyone the spooks. The show is loosely based on the popular 1959 novel of the same name. The show switches between the storyline of the past and that of the present day.

6 The Order (2019)

The Order on Netflix is a teen supernatural/fantasy show that has elements of the demonic. A new college student has a hidden agenda for attending Belgrave University. He seeks revenge again the secret Hermetic Order who he believes caused his mother’s death.

The Order dabbles in rituals and sacrifices in order to use magic. The sow uses demonic references and the occult as a premise. The main characters might have even summoned a couple of bad demons in the show. The show also ties in the supernatural with another secret order on campus who have a long lineage of werewolf knights that strive to defeat the Order.

5 Lucifer (2016)

Lucifer is a popular show that Netflix picked up that straddles the border between the supernatural and the celestial. In terms of the demonic, well Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) is the King of Hell and ruler of demons including his cohort, Mazikeen. The show is often compared to Supernatural in terms of characters and story elements.

Lucifer got bored of ruling Hell and decided to live a life of rambunctious fun on Earth as a night club owner. But when a close friend is murdered, he joins forces with an LAPD detective. 4 Evil (2019)

Evil is a new show from 2019 that just became available on Netflix in 2020. NOt many have heard of the show but it’s gotten some good rep so far for its intriguing storyline. The show centers around the Catholic church and possession of evil spirits or demons.

The interesting thing about the show is that it’s not all about demons wreaking havoc how one might think. A priest in training is tasked with investigating supernatural incidents to uncover if they truly are supernatural or psychological. He teams up with a forensic psychologist and technology expert to uncover or debunk whether these victims are truly possessed. In some cases, it was a good scare using modern technology or science. It soon spirals into an evolving demonic plan at large.

3 Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (2018)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina had many viewers talking when it premiered on Netflix in 2018. This is largely due to fact that most fans were used to the 1996 version while the new one is based on the horror comic of the same name. This show is much more gritty, dark and deals with magic in a sinister way.

Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) is now of age and must decide on whether or not to sign her name in the Book of the Beast and leave her human life behind. She struggles with her half-human and half-witch nature while uncovering some dark secrets about who she really is and the barbaric rituals witches take part in.

2 Wynonna Earp (2016)

There’s nothing like returning to your hometown and discovering that one has a destiny to fulfill. Wynonna Earp was a show originally premiered on SyFy and later became readily available on Netflix. The show is Western supernatural horror series based on the comic series by Beau Smith.

The show adequately describes the supernatural and demonic themes. Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) returns home to fulfill a long family destiny in the town of Purgatory. Revenants are reincarnated outlaws hellbent on staying and destroying the Ghost River Triangle where the town resides.

1 Supernatural (2005)

This goes without saying that Supernatural is the epitome of the supernatural and demonic genre seeing at it deals with Heaven and Hell, angels, demons, Lucifer, and the paranormal. Fans have watched the Winchester brothers since 2005 take on non-human creatures and demons.

The Winchester’s pick up where their father left off and travel across the country hunting monsters. As the show went on, more characters come into play as well as the brother’s bigger purpose in it all. They investigate everything that goes bump in the night on Earth and from everywhere in between.
