The importance of having a fantastic main character cannot be measured, as they are expected to be the driving force of their said series. It is a simple fact that a series cannot last if the audience is unable to resonate with them. The shows that fans often end up enjoying immensely seem to always have great main characters.

Yet, even with this being so, supporting characters need to be stellar as well. Sure, they may not be what the series centers around, but they need to provide a lot of substance to the story. In fact, some iconic series actually do such a marvelous job with these roles that they end up overshadowing the main characters. In past cases where this occurred, the series would end up becoming extremely popular, so this should not be viewed as a bad thing. In fact, it could even be labeled as stupendous, as evidenced by these impressive examples.

10 BoJack Horseman

It is apparent that without the title character, there would have been no BoJack Horseman. Therefore, one cannot take away his importance to this show. However, even with this being so, it is clear that the side characters were the true favorites of the show.

That is not to say that BoJack didn’t bring anything to the series, but Todd and Mr. Peanut Butter were simply far more entertaining. They would go on to provide some of the funniest moments fans would see on the series, while also being very likable.

9 The Office

Michael Scott was definitely an outstanding character in terms of humor, but this show did such a stellar job with its side characters too. It is hard to find a single character from this series that was bad, as they all had amazing qualities that would make audience members laugh.

However, at the end of the day, one could argue that Dwight outclassed Michael as the series progressed. Of course, it must also be stated that the show suffered without Michael regardless of how stellar the side characters were, so his importance to the show was massive too.

8 New Girl

Jess was certainly loved by New Girl fans, but as the series continued, it became clear that the roommates ended up being better. One has to admire that change though, as these characters would truly end up carrying the show.

That is not to say that Jess was bad either, as she progressed in quality as the show continued too. Yet, the friendship between Nick and Schmidt, as well Winston’s immense strangeness ended up putting them on top. It would make them provide the best moments from this series.

7 Parks and Recreation

Leslie was a fantastic main character for Parks and Recreation, but when one thinks of this series, their first character that pops up is Ron Swanson. How could it not? He was the epitome of iconic characters with his marvelous humor and deadpan personality.

Following this, audience members also were more drawn to Aubrey as well, which would blossom Aubrey Plaza’s acting career. Overall, Amy Poehler was stellar with this series, but her supporting characters were even better.

6 King Of The Hill

There is no denying the fact that Hank Hill was a fantastic character in King Of The Hill. Following his everyday life was a fun experience, but at the end of the day, Bobby was the true heart of the series.

It was apparent that his humor and overall quirkiness made him the reason why the show would garner such large audience numbers. Also, the rest of Hank’s friend group was spectacular too. Overall, this was a series that would become legendary because of its strong side characters.

5 How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother followed the love life of Ted Mosby, which definitely brought upon some stellar moments. Yet, even with this being the case, the rest of the cast would honestly end up being funnier and at some points, even more likable.

In terms of popularity though, one could argue that Barney had a far bigger following than Ted. It does make sense, as he certainly was the most intriguing character on the show. In terms of overall respect though, the audience often seemed to have the highest amount for the kind soul, Marshall.

4 That 70’s Show

Eric Foreman was a cool character on That 70’s Show, but the rest of the gang would honestly carry the series. That is not to say that Eric was bad at all, but in terms of overall comedy and character progression, the others honestly would go on to take the cake.

This would end up being seen after Topher Grace exited the show and the other characters had the chance to take center stage. One only has to look at Fez and Kelso for this.

3 Community

Jeff certainly would get a lot of attention as the main character of Community, but it was clear that Abed and Troy were the true faces of the franchise. Their friendship would create the best moments in this series, as well as their fantastic personalities.

In his own right, Jeff was a great character, as his progression from being sleazy to a caring friend was extremely nice to see. However, what viewers would see from the other two honestly was far more spectacular.

2 Master Of None

Master Of None was fantastic because of the fact that it had amazing side characters. Sure, Dev was fantastic as the main one, as the audience had an easy time routing for him in his quest for love and overall development. However, even with that, his best friends, Arnold and Denise, were the true stars.

Arnold was the perfect sidekick, as he not only was hilarious, but he also provided a lot of advice to help Dev through his troubles. As for Denise, it was amazing following her story, especially when it came to her family. Each of them honestly should have been around even more.

1 The Good Place

Eleanor was an absolutely marvelous character to follow, even if flawed at times. However, a lot of fans were even more enamored with Janet, as she was able to progress as a character.

It was quite interesting to see her learn how to get in touch with her humane side while also possessing the answers to every single question in the entire universe. As for the rest of the cast, they too were just as good as Eleanor in their own ways. This just shows how spectacular this series truly was.
