Some shows are so unique and wonderful that it’s difficult to imagine something can compare. In fact, the fans simply grow to love the show’s character and the story, and want more TV series that are similar to it. The Umbrella Academy is one of the most original shows out there.

It offers a new spin of the well-known superhero theme, and when combined with the excellent performances from all actors involved in the show, it’s a hard task to find a substitute. Luckily, there are a few shows that might catch the eye of those fans who love The Umbrella Academy.

10 American Horror Story

At first glance, it looks like The Umbrella Academy and American Horror Story have nothing in common. However, a closer look will reveal similarities in both TV shows. What makes them similar is that they take its genre’s conventions and twist them, turn them into something new or at least refreshing.

American Horror Story also has a larger number of heroes it focuses on, just like The Umbrella Academy. And neither of them is what one would call unoriginal.

9 The Boys

There are many superhero shows on TV. But rarely any of them has the courage to portray superheroes as the bad guys. The Boys show that having special powers doesn’t automatically make a person a hero. The world isn’t black and white, after all.

With a few notable exceptions, heroes in this show do despicable things. The Umbrella Academy heroes aren’t as bad but they also did some unsavory stuff and have a lot of issues. Both shows aren’t afraid to show violent scenes but also work with dark humor.

8 Constantine

Constantine’s solo show only has one season so it doesn’t take long to catch up on it. Even though it was canceled early, it’s still worth watching. Constantine’s backstory is shown in further details here, which is useful for those fans who later encounter him on Arrow and especially Legends of Tomorrow.

Constantine would fit in well with the heroes from The Umbrella Academy, thanks to his snarky humor and independent personality.

7 Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Neil Patrick Harris is best-known for playing Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. But all superhero fans who enjoyed The Umbrella Academy shouldn’t miss Harris in his greatest villainous role.

Harris plays the titular Doctor Horrible, a villain whose main goal is to get into the Evil League of Evil. Unfortunately, Nathan Fillion’s Captain Hammer stands in his way. The show is short, full of catchy songs, bizarre funny moments, and great performances.

6 Good Omens

In the first season of The Umbrella Academy, the superheroes realize the world is about to end. Some of them want to stop it. In Good Omens, the heroes also realize the world is about to end and want to stop it.

The show is full of intelligent humor and strange situations. It offered one of the best buddy duos of recent years too. David Tennant’s Crowley and Michael Sheen’s Aziraphale should be enemies by all accounts, but instead, they are great friends. The show is a miniseries so it’s easy to binge-watch it.

5 Harley Quinn

Most superhero shows focus on the good guys. That’s why Harley Quinn feels like a breath of fresh air. Harley sees the world around her in a unique way and she does what she wants. It’s possible she and Klaus from The Umbrella Academy would get along. The show currently has two seasons and it included other iconic DC characters, including Poison Ivy, Batman, Joker, and Batgirl.

4 Legends Of Tomorrow

Some superhero shows focus on individual superheroes. Others tell the story of a superhero team. In both The Umbrella Academy and Legends of Tomorrow, it is the second case.

This show is eccentric as well, with unique characters that have to learn to work with each other. And even though they are not family by blood, they build strong bonds in the end. If it sounds familiar, it’s because The Umbrella Academy works with similar motifs.

3 Misfits

This iconic British superhero-like show has a lot of things in common with The Umbrella Academy. Most notably, it made Robert Sheehan famous. Sheehan later portrayed Klaus on The Umbrella Academy. Funnily enough, both Nathan from Misfits and Klaus have special powers connected to death and life.

What’s more, this show puts its heroes into a lot of weird situations. And while they are not always sympathetic, it’s fascinating to watch how they will deal with all the craziness around them and with getting special powers.

2 Preacher

Another TV show that is quite similar to The Umbrella Academy is the comic book adapted series Preacher. Its heroes are far from innocent and they mess things up multiple times, even when they try to do the right thing.

Dominic Cooper plays Jesse Custer, a disillusioned priest who is able to control other people’s actions after a creature called Genesis decides to merge with him. Together, with his supernatural friends, he sets out to restore his faith in God while trying to prevent chaos from descending on the world.

1 Titans

Finally, Titans is another superhero team show. It’s not as gloomy as The Umbrella Academy but all fans of dark superhero shows could enjoy it. The show does contain humor as well but it’s not as cheerful as Legends of Tomorrow or the likes of which.

The show follows the formation of the superhero team and their fight against their dangerous enemies. The team’s hero is none other than Dick Grayson, Batman’s former Robin.
