When it comes to DC movies, there might not be a more unique one than Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The movie is colorful, and nothing like Zack Snyder’s efforts but is also very adult-oriented, so it also doesn’t fit in with Shazam! and Wonder Woman.

However, it is also a little bit like all of those movies, but with a darkly comic edge and an emphasis on female empowerment in the superhero genre. There is a lot to love about Birds of Prey, and there are plenty of movies out there to watch for people who loved this entry in the DCEU.

10 Suicide Squad (2016)

The first stop for those who loved Birds of Prey is where Harley Quinn made her first appearance. That would be the DCEU movie Suicide Squad, where Margo Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the villains forced to go on a mission by Amanda Waller with the threat of death if she resisted.

This movie also showed the toxic relationship between Harley and Joker referenced in Birds of Prey, and it is where she stepped out of his shadow to be her own woman.

9 Tank Girl (1995)

Margot Robbie is supposed to take on a very different superhero role in the future with the lead role in the comic book adaptation of Tank Girl. This comic was adapted before in 1995 with Lori Petty starring as the lead character in what might be described as Mad Max with superheroes and female butt kickers.

In this original movie, Petty was Tank Girl, who teamed up with Naomi Watts’ Jet Girl and supersoldiers known as the Rippers to battle an oppressive corporation led by Malcolm McDowell’s Kesslee.

8 Wonder Woman (2017)

The Birds of Prey movie was not the first from DCEU to feature females in the lead. Wonder Woman beat it to the punch by a couple of years when Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman headlined her own movie. This movie, directed by Patty Jenkins.

This movie was an origin story, with Diana raised on Themyscira, but them leaving her home forever to battle the evils of World War I with a soldier named Steve Trevor. This movie showed arguably the most powerful female superhero in a movie to date.

7 Deadpool (2016)

For people who loved the humor factor of Birds of Prey, amidst all the violence and death, check out Deadpool. While the movie is Marvel, compared to Birds of Prey’s DC, it was made by Fox and was a massive hit, thanks mostly to actor Ryan Reynolds making sure it played by the rules.

Reynolds was a major fan of Deadpool and ensured that it kept the humor while never straying from the comic book character. Robbie has done the same with Harley Quinn, ensuring that she remains a strong female lead while keeping the humor and faithfulness to the comics.

6 Kick-Ass (2010)

Seeing a female hero show up all the men is nothing new. It happened in 2010 when Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass came to the big screen. Based on a book from Icon Comics, this movie told the story of kids who decided to become superheroes, despite having no powers.

However, while Kick-Ass himself was not that dangerous, Hit-Girl was trained by her to be a stone-cold killer, and she held her own in every fight, despite being a young teenager herself.

5 The Dark Knight (2008)

For anyone who wants to see the best version of Joker, before he ever had a chance to lure in Harley Quinn for his plans, check out The Dark Knight.

This movie came out the same year as Iron Man. While the MCU has become the template for the comic book movies made today, The Dark Knight was the first comic book movie to be considered award-caliber, with Heath Ledger actually winning a posthumous Oscar for his role as Joker.

4 X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Before the MCU, Fox was making some great superhero movies for Marvel with its X-Men movies. After the first trilogy, a prequel series rewrote much of history, and the best of the prequels came in 2014 with X-Men: Days of Future Past.

This movie told one of the X-Men’s best comic book stories, as a future showed Sentinels destroyed the world and hunted down surviving X-Men to kill them. As a result, they sent Wolverine back in time to stop Mystique from killing the man that set this entire future into play.

3 The Old Guard (2020)

While it might be arguable to call it a superhero movie, that is exactly what The Old Guard is. This Netflix movie tells the story of a group of supernatural immortals who save people when the time is right and have been doing this for centuries.

However, when a pharmaceutical company learns of their existence, the CEO sets out to capture them to use their blood to create medicine that will make him wealthy beyond belief. Charlize Theron is the lead actress, kicking all sorts of butt in the movie.

2 Captain Marvel (2019)

It seems almost hard to believe that DC beat Marvel to the punch when it comes to a female superhero movie, but it did with Wonder Woman. Now, with Birds of Prey, DC feels secure in its place, but Marvel won’t remain down for long.

While it was not as universally loved as Wonder Woman, the Marvel movie Captain Marvel was able to prove the MCU knew what it was doing as well with female heroes. Brie Larson took the role seriously and delivered what might be the most powerful character in all of Marvel Comics — regardless of gender.

1 Joker (2019)

Joaquin Phoenix tried to reach the same level of critical success as Heath Ledger before him when he took on Joker’s role in a movie about the Clown Prince of Crime in 2019.

While based more on the movies of Martin Scorsese than the comic books the character came from. Phoenix was a success in his performance as the Joker, as he slowly lost his grip on reality and became the most dangerous criminal in the DCEU.
