The Office is known for its outlandish, hilarious dialogue. Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute’s one-liners are often repeated among fans as they rewatch the series on streaming services. But as many funny quotes and moments, there are in The Office, there’s an equal amount of cringey or annoying ones.

On Reddit, fans pointed out lines in the series that bothered them, Whether it was the way they were said, the tone in the character’s voice, or the line itself — every Office fan has a bothersome line in their back pocket.

The Bully’s Mom

“A Friend Of Mine Uses Your Paper, You Do Good Work.”

In ‘Test the Store,’ Andy had one of his biggest freakouts when he was attacked by a group of young girls in the parking lot. One girl, in particular, punched him in the face and he had a black eye for work.

At the end of the day, the girl’s mother dragged her back into the office to apologize to Andy for what she did. Reddit u/Xem1337 made a thread noting that the girl’s mother saying, “a friend of mine uses your paper, you do good work” was the worst line in the show. The Redditor didn’t elaborate but the line did seem random considering Dunder Mifflin was just a paper company.

Jim Halpert

“Something In Her Past I Guess. Not Really Sure Of The Whole Story But Something About A Guy Who Used To Work Here…”

When Pam’s lease was coming to an end, Jim commented that she should move into his apartment. At this point in their relationship timeline, Jim and Pam had been dating for a few months after being secretly in love with each other for years.

Pam commented that she didn’t want to move in with someone unless she was engaged, which prompted Jim to comment on her reasoning. Reddit u/Benderisgreat63 noted this as the most annoying line. “When Jim says he knows Pam doesn’t want a long engagement, and then says ‘I think it has to do with this guy she used to work with,’ etc. Such a forced line –  would have been funnier with just the first part,” they wrote.

Dwight Schrute

“I Don’t Care What Jim Says. That Is Not The Real Ben Franklin. I’m 99% Sure.”

Dwight had the ability to be the smartest in the office, but his passion for being the best of the best made him do things that weren’t always safe or appropriate for the workplace.

Considering how bright Dwight is, it bothered Reddit u/Flamboyantbutterfly that they wrote him off as dimwitted in ‘Ben Franklin.’ They wrote, “Dwight saying that he’s 99% sure that the ‘stripper’ is not the real Ben Franklin. I think it’s offending how smart Dwight is.” Dwight can be gullible but not gullible enough to think Ben Franklin was still alive.

Pam Beesley

“What Are You Doing?”

In ‘Casino Night,’ Jim finally had the guts to tell Pam that he was in love with her. Reddit u/Baertaelf noted that Pam’s response of, “What are you doing?” was the worst in the series.

It was obvious Pam loved Jim but her response to his admission put fans off because of how cold it was. The episode was later one of Jim and Pam’s best episodes because they shared a passionate kiss at the end of the night, but Pam’s reaction to Jim’s feelings was not loved.

Andy Bernard

“In Your Head, In Your Head…”

In ‘The Return,’ Andy was satisfied after Dwight quit Dunder Mifflin due to something Andy planted in Michael’s head. Without Dwight around, Andy kicked up his feet and sang “Zombie” by The Cranberries.

However, this musical moment was also one of his more annoying. Reddit u/Past_Statistician491 wrote the line that bothered them the most was the lyric Andy repeated. They wrote, “The way he repeats ‘In your head’ countless times in front of the whole office without anyone saying anything is beyond me. It’s so irritating.”

Jim Halpert

“We Were Thinking Somewhere Between $5 – 10,000? I Can Do The Full $10,000. We Should Just – [Blows Air] – All In.”

When Jim started working at the startup he created with a friend from college, Athlead, part of his job was finding more investors. With all of his business partners investing money, Jim felt like he and Pam should as well.

The two had a conversation about how much to invest — the maximum being $10,000. Pam seemed uncomfortable with spending their savings and told Jim to only do it if he had to. On the day of the investors meeting, one Reddit user wrote that Jim’s line about how much to invest bothered them, but how he relayed the information to Pam was worse. “Jim, after telling Pam they no longer needed investors, also told her, ‘by the way, I invested $10k.'”

Phyllis Vance

“Hand ‘Em Over Numbnuts”

Some fans loved Phyllis while others couldn’t stand her. Either way, her character fluctuated over nine seasons. There were episodes where she was soft-spoken and kind, and then there were episodes where she was brazen and hurtful.

Reddit u/Insane36969 wrote that Phyllis’ line “Hand ’em over numbnuts” bothered them the most. U/BarryWhite21 agreed, writing, “Man this line is delivered very well and makes me furious every time!”

Pam’s Professor

“It Looks Like I’m Boring Somebody Already… Please Sit Down.”

When Pam leaves Scranton for art school in New York, she’s excited to chase her dreams and make something of herself.

On her first day, Pam realizes she’s in the wrong class when the teacher enters and says the name of the class they’re in. Realizing her mistake, Pam silently tries to sneak out but the professor didn’t let her. Reddit u/07GoogledIt shared an image of the teacher’s line and wrote, “This scene bothers me more than any other scene from The Office.” Instead of explaining to the teacher that she was in the wrong class, Pam sat through it.

Michael Scott

“It’s Like Talking To The Sweet Old Lady On The Bus.”

Michael is known for the odd things in his office, his silly remarks, and his theatrical ways. But Michael is also known for being incredibly inappropriate.

In ‘Chair Model,’ Pam set Michael up on a blind date with her landlady. Once Michael saw that she wasn’t a supermodel he started treating her poorly. At the end of their date, Michael said talking to his date was like “talking to the sweet old lady on the bus.” Because of how Michael reacted, Reddit u/LilCorbs wrote, “This scene always annoyed me.” In fact, Michael could have gotten out of the date by telling her that he wasn’t the Michael she was looking for. “She had already clarified she was looking for a Michael Scott so if he said he was Michael Scarn or something it would’ve been fine,” they wrote.

Michael Scott

“I Am Not Robbing The Cradle. If Anything, I Am Robbing The Grave.”

It surprised fans that age was never a topic that was brought up when Michael started dating Pam’s mom, Helene. It wasn’t until her birthday rolled around and Michael found out how old she was that he started questioning their relationship.

When he found out Helene was 58, Michael broke up with her and told the cameras it was like he was “robbing the grave.” One Redditor said this about Michael’s line, “It’s uncomfortable but it’s so well done and so hilariously out of touch [of] Michael that [in my opinion] it’s one of the best scenes in the entire show.”
