With the third season recently finished, and a fourth on the way, the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows is still keeping audiences entertained. However, perhaps due to the change of writers, direction, or the pandemic, the third season hasn’t seemed to have landed as well with audiences as previous offerings.

But that isn’t the case with everyone. Users on Reddit have discussed what they felt were the positives of the third season, and there have been quite a few. From specific episodes to character interactions, many fans on Reddit stumped for What We Do in the Shadows season 3.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Casino Episode

For many Reddit users, season 3 had a stand-out episode, and that was “The Casino.” The vampires and Guillermo travel to Atlantic City for their neighbors’ wedding vow renewal, only to find to their horror the next day that their ancestral soil has been vacuumed up by housekeeping, leaving them trapped, growing weaker, and losing sleep.

A number of Reddit users commented on how great this episode was, with Redditor futur1stik calling it “the best of the entire series.” It’s easy to see why this episode is considered a great one, with two particular moments of this episode delighting Redditors even more.

Guillermo’s International Travel Adventure

Because they cannot depart without their ancestral soil, Guillermo must leave Atlantic City to retrieve each vampire’s ancestral soil. But because each vampire is from various parts of the world, Guillermo ends up on an international quest to find the right ancestral soil, filming himself as he collects it in the style of a travel vlog.

Guillermo’s international adventure sat well with Redditor spockgiirl, who commented “I would 100% watch Guillermo’s travel show if he were to have one.” Given his status as the most likable character in WWDITS and his fate at the end of season 3, it is perhaps more possible than expected that Guillermo may have a travel show within the series.

Nandor Enjoys The Big Bang Theory

While they wait for Guillermo to return with their ancestral soil in “The Casino,” the vampires try and make do with what they can in the hotel and casino. One very notable moment is Nandor playing a casino game that is themed around the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

Redditor ShortDistanceRunr commented that “Nandor being a fan of The Big Bang Theory game was pure gold”, despite not being a fan of The Big Bang Theory themselves. The vampires getting acquainted with modern culture is already one of the show’s highlights and for Nandor to get into a well-known show is just hilariously brilliant, even if this is what ultimately tips him into a state of depression.

More Screen Time For The Guide

A character that was introduced in the first season was the ethereal yet rather sarcastic Guide, who acted as a messenger and guide for the vampires to their first Vampiric Council meeting. Because of Nandor and Nadja’s promotion to the new leaders of the Council at the start of season 3, the Guide became a more prominent character as a result.

This has been a positive for Redditor Torley_, who says that “having Kristen Schaal as Floating Woman more in the mix has allowed for some bonus levity.” The Guide is a great addition for the cast, acting as a guide not just for the vampires but also the viewers. It will be great to see more of her and possibly her past in WWDITS season 4.

Matt Berry Still Has It

One of the main characters of What We Do in the Shadows is Laszlo, a carefree vampire and Nadja’s husband who is played marvelously by Matt Berry. With Nadja and Nandor busy with council duties, Laszlo soon ends up spending time with Colin Robinson after a shocking discovery.

While some haven’t been impressed by his performance in this series, Redditors were quick to disagree. Redditor sugarland588275 states that they are “absolutely loving everything that he is doing this season” and Free_Alternative6365 comments that Matt Berry’s “performance is still perfect.” With the number of changes happening during the season, it’s understandable that Berry’s character took a bit of a change himself in order to adapt.

Guillermo Is Funnier

At the start of the show, Guillermo is a meek familiar who remains loyal to the vampires, especially Nandor, and helps wherever he can in the hopes of becoming a vampire. But as the series progresses, thanks to his discovery that he is descended from vampire killers, Guillermo begins to stand up for himself more.

As a result of this and wiping out most of the Vampiric Council in the season 2 finale, Guillermo has become sassier to the vampires in season 3. Redditor kitaeks47demons notes that Guillermo “is funnier this season… he has to watch Nandor like a parent”. It’s honestly great to see Guillermo fight back a little after all the mistreatment he has received in the previous seasons, and the vampires’ reactions make it even better.

More Colin Robinson

One particularly noteworthy character in What We Do in the Shadows is Colin Robinson, an energy vampire who drains his victims by boring or frustrating them, be they human or vampire. Season 3 saw Colin Robinson wish to learn more about his roots, which included a trip to Plum Island where he and a siren fall in love.

Fans were happy to see Colin Robinson get more screen time this season, with Redditor abbeylove007 commenting how much they love the series so far “especially with more Colin Robinson”. With the shock twist at the end of season 3, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Colin Robinson in season 4.

Different Character Interactions

Throughout the series, there have been understandably more focused character interactions, such as Nadja and Lazslo, and Nandor and Guillermo. But Redditor fellowperson789 noted that they felt that season 3 were “trying new character combinations” but that it’s “still as funny as before.”

Indeed, it is quite refreshing to see characters interact with others that they would not normally. Nadja and Nandor have been spending more time together due to their joint leadership of the council. But perhaps the best example is Laszlo and Colin Robinson heading to Plum Island, where they are captured by a siren.

Nandor And Guillermo’s Growing Relationship

It is without question that one of the best relationships in WWDITS is Nandor and Guillermo. As the latter is his long-suffering familiar for ten years at the start of the show, Nandor treated Guillermo with a bit more respect than the others, and season 3 saw their relationship grow into a friendship.

Reddit users were delighted to note this as a positive for season 3. Redditor cryptidcult was pleased with “the Nandor and Guillermo-centred [episodes] we seem to be getting” and LesbianSansa noted that it was “seemingly developing into a full-fledged romance.” It is fair to say that fans will remain hopeful that their relationship, be it romantic or platonic, still stays strong after what happened in the season 3 finale.

Character Growth

Part of the charm of What We Do in the Shadows are the main characters and the many supernatural misadventures they get up to. While some fans question how the characterization of the gang is supposedly different, Reddit user Seer7787 noted that it was in fact “character growth.”

With the gang facing new situations and discoveries that ultimately impact their lives and afterlives whether they like it or not, it is only natural there will be some character changes as they adapt. The Redditor is absolutely right in saying that it’s growth rather than different characterization, and it’ll be exciting to see them grow even more from the challenges they will face in season 4.
