Kim’s Convenience is a sitcom about the Korean immigrant Kim family working at their convenience store in Canada and getting into typical family sitcom antics. Mr. and Mrs. Kim run the store with their daughter Janet. The show also loops in son, Jung, who starts with a strained relationship with his father as he’s moved out of the house and works at a car rental company.

It’s a heart-warming and lovely show that tends to focus on the good in the world and you can’t help but smile when you’re watching it. Although overall it’s a well-rated show, let’s revisit some of the lowest-rated episodes of Kim’s Convenience according to IMDb.

10 Appanticitis (S3 E11) – 7.6

Mr. Kim starts telling his wife all of the little habits he finds annoying about her, which of course ends with them bickering back and forth. Jung and Kimchee make a video to audition for a reality show, but Jung realizes that him and Shannon might have better chemistry together so they make one of their own without telling Kimchee. Janet takes Gerald to the hospital with appendicitis and her old boyfriend, Raj, is his doctor.

He’s quickly proven wrong when customers want to buy Janet’s photos, which Mr. Kim happily agrees, and when Janet is chosen to display her photos at an art show everything blows up. Jung attempts to move up the ladder at the car rental.

8 Gay Discount (S1 E1) – 7.6

The pilot shows up on this list as one of the lowest-rated episodes. Pilots seem to be either nostalgic in the show’s timeline and a joy to watch or it’s a little awkward and off, just getting its footing, compared to the rest of the show.

The episode introduces the Kim family and their dynamic of Janet living with her parents and Jung moving out and not speaking with their father. The main plot is Mr. Kim wanting to backtrack after not letting a gay couple put up a flyer in his shop by offering a 15% discount at his shop for anyone who is gay, which, of course, gets him into trouble.

7 Bon Voyage (S4 E13) – 7.6

Janet gets a photography job in Tanzania for the summer and she prepares to leave on her new adventure. She is even more excited when ex-boyfriend, Raj, decides to join her, but has a difficult time saying goodbye to long-time friend Gerald. Shannon hints that she wants to get a roommate and it takes Jung a minute to realize she might want to take the next step and move in together. As the last episode of the season, it leaves a lot up in the air without fully committing to one cliff-hanger.

6 Silent Auction (S2 E8) – 7.5

This episode sees Janet win a decent amount of money from a scratch-off lottery game she got from their own convenience store. Her father tells her she can’t claim the money because she got it from their store, so she enlists friend Mr. Chin’s help in claiming the money. Mr. and Mrs. Kim attempt to be fancy with clothes from the church silent auction, with disastrous results.

5 Birds Of A Feather (S4 E11) – 7.5

Shannon saves a bird that flew into Jung’s window and it starts living with Jung because Shannon knows her cats would attack the poor bird and it is slighter safer with Jung, who was ready to put it out of its misery. Janet is upset when roommate Chelsea steals her idea to go to Korea and teach English for the summer so Janet tries to manipulate her boyfriend Gerald into changing her mind.

4 The Trollop (S4 E1) – 7.3

Janet runs into her old boyfriend, Raj, and learns that he’s officially called off his wedding and she goes to a party to see him. Raj’s father tries to figure out the woman who he believes broke them apart, and Janet doesn’t want him knowing that it was because of her. Shannon and Jung go out to lunch at a Chinese restaurant and it creates a conversation about culture between the employees when Shannon does a Chinese accent.

3 Thy Neighbour’s Wifi (S3 E4) – 7.2

A customer tells Mr. Kim that the new gym next door has fantastic wifi and it’s free for members. Mr. Kim refuses to work out, so he goes to talk to them and sneakily get the wifi username and password for himself. Jung and his boss, Shannon, awkwardly try to go out for drinks and continue their “will they won’t they” vibe. Janet does a bible reading for church and her friends give her a difficult time as she tries to get them to believe she plans to rebel.

2 Thinkin’ About Inkin’ (S4 E5) – 7.2

Mrs. Kim helps Pastor Nina try to get funding for the church and is determined to find out who Pastor Nina is romantically involved with. Janet gets a tattoo after seeing an ex-boyfriend. Jung and Kimchee fight over a necklace Kimchee bought for his girlfriend, but Jung ends up taking it and giving the necklace to Shannon.

1 The Help (S4 E3) – 7.2

Mrs. Kim is mistaken for a waitress at one of Janet’s art shows as she competes for an award and Janet is appalled at the notion because she thinks it was racist for someone to assume her Asian mother was the help.

The woman apologizes to Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Kim seems to suggest that Janet should win the award, and she does. It’s an odd episode that doesn’t fully cover Janet’s feelings about her mother influencing her win and although she’s upset at her mother interfering, she doesn’t do anything about it, which is probably why it’s the lowest-rated episode of the series.
