When it was released in 2018, Avengers: Infinity War was the longest MCU film to date at a whopping 149 minutes. For the first time, characters like the Wakandan warriors and the Guardians of the Galaxy banded together with the Avengers from different parts of the universe to put a stop to a villain’s crusade.

The amounts of time the characters spend on screen reflect the unprecedented style of the story that brought the Infinity Saga to ahead. It may surprise some fans to see that these times so vastly differ from that of the film’s MCU counterparts. Here are the characters who got the most screen time.

11 Spider-Man (Peter Parker): 7 Min. 15 Sec.

Following the young hero’s recruitment and mentorship by Tony Stark in Peter’s first solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Iron Man calls on him again in the fight against the Black Order. Ignoring Mr. Stark’s instructions to stay put once the ship took off, Peter follows him into space, landing them both on the planet Titan.

The film sees Peter moving on from his status of “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” and, after initially refusing Stark’s offer to join the team, taking on the role of an Avenger. Armed with a new suit, he plays a key role in rescuing Doctor Strange and forming a plan to stop Thanos.

10 Captain America (Steve Rogers): 7 Min. 15 Sec.

Coming in at the same amount of time as Spider-Man, Steve makes his way onto the big screen for the first time since the massive fallout in Civil War and reclaims his title as Captain America. With the new, existential threat taking precedence over the Sokovia Accords, he leads his team out of hiding and reunites the Avengers to take down Thanos.

His return to the MCU shows no loss of bravery or nobility but rather a willingness to save the world in spite of the dissent it had previously shown him.

9 Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff): 9 Min.

Although it was the Mind Stone that gave way to the Battle of Wakanda, it was Wanda’s decisions that brought the final showdown to a head. At a critical point in the fight, her entrance to the battlefield changes the tide in the heroes’ favor.

The film also expands on the romance that had sparked between her and Vision in Civil War, which becomes an important element to building up the climax of the war for the Infinity Stones. It comes down to her to destroy the Mind Stone, which kills Vision, to keep it from Thanos, whom she single-handedly almost defeats at the same time.

8 The Hulk (Bruce Banner): 9 Min. 30 Sec.

One of the first Avengers to confront Thanos and jump into the Infinity War, Dr. Banner rejoins the team on Earth for the first time since his disappearance in Age of Ultron.

After watching Thanos tear through Thor, Loki, and his own alter ego of the Hulk, he travels to Earth to warn the rest of the Avengers and Doctor Strange of Thanos’ intent to wipe out half the universe. With the Hulk no longer at his side after his encounter with the titan, Banner uses the Hulkbuster armor to fight in the Battle of Wakanda.

7 Vision: 10 Min.

In the middle of a love affair with the Scarlet Witch, the android finds himself—or, rather, the Infinity Stone in his head—at the center of the war. Calculating the impossible odds, he foresees the need to destroy the Stone, thus destroying him, before it lands in Thanos’ grasp.

His fellow Avengers oppose the idea, Wanda’s voice ringing out the loudest, and instead take him to Wakanda, where Princess Shuri uses Wakandan technology to begin removing the Stone from his head. The process is interrupted, however, and Vision ends up on the battlefield, where he convinces Wanda to destroy the Stone, killing him.

6 Star-Lord (Peter Quill): 10 Min. 15 Sec.

Answering a distress call from the nearby Statesman, Peter’s team rescues Thor, who tells them of the coming war. They find themselves again in a battle over an Infinity Stone, but Peter’s resolve is renewed when Thanos abducts Gamora.

He makes it his mission to find them, leading his Guardians of the Galaxy into the battle against Thanos and teaming up with Avengers Iron Man and Spider-Man as well as Doctor Strange in the process. Learning that Thanos has killed Gamora unleashes a thoughtless rage that ultimately leads to the team’s failure to defeat the titan.

5 Doctor Strange: 11 Min. 15 Sec.

His rise to the position of Master of the Mystic Arts in Doctor Strange comes at an opportune time. As the keeper of the Time Stone, he has the responsibility of protecting the Stone from Thanos during the Infinity War. It’s a commitment that takes him to the planet Titan.

The doctor’s role in Infinity War is actually expanded upon in the events following the film. He mentions being able to foresee one outcome of millions in which they won the war, and it’s not until five years later when they have lost half of all life, including him, only to get them back, that it’s revealed that he knew this was the only way they could have won.

4 Thor: 15 Min. 15 Sec.

As his preceding film’s end credits scene led directly into the events of Infinity War, Thor’s role in the film is that of a man who had experienced a lot of growth since the last time he fought with the Avengers.

He goes on a journey that takes him to the ends of the galaxy, teaming up with Guardians Rocket and Groot. In the absence of the destroyed Mjolnir, he creates Stormbreaker. Armed with the new weapon, he and the team travel to Earth to join the Avengers’ efforts in the Battle of Wakanda.

3 Iron Man (Tony Stark): 17 Min.

Infinity War bands together the efforts of heroes from across the world and from every corner of the galaxy, including the Guardians that Tony eventually teams up with. It’s for this reason that the film remains the only one of the four Avengers crossover films in existence that Iron Man does not lead in screen time.

He spends the film apart from most of his fellow Avengers, having been taken to the planet Titan with Peter and Strange. There, he works with the Guardians to formulate a plan to defeat Thanos. Its failure, by the end of the film, leaves him stranded in space.

2 Gamora: 20 Min.

After the Guardians films had given fans a glimpse of Gamora’s past, Infinity War delves deeper into her backstory and her adoption as Thanos’ daughter, and it reveals why she ends up being so important to the Infinity Saga.

She’s the only person who truly knows how dangerous Thanos is, a plight that is fully unveiled upon her capture and ultimate demise. Although physically powerless against her father, she proves to be his most difficult opponent to beat and her life the most difficult to sacrifice in the name of his mission.

1 Thanos: 31 Min.

Marvel Studios has conquered massive feats in the world of cinema, but Thanos’ role in Infinity War makes the film unique among other superhero films. He becomes the only villain to lead in screen time in any MCU film, and it’s clear that he is a villain throughout the entire movie. However, Infinity War, in a way, made Thanos its main character.

Fans are made to root against him the whole way through, but once the dust has settled and he has turned half the universe to dust, the film shifts from the heroes’ journey to stop him and becomes Thanos’ journey to complete his life’s mission.
