Hogwarts Legacy was announced at the PlayStation 5 Showcase last week, promising Harry Potter fans an immersive experience within the wizarding world. In addition to customizing one’s character, learning different spells, and exploring Hogwarts and other magical settings, players can discover the many fantastic beasts within that universe.

Set in the 1800s, the player receives a late Hogwarts acceptance letter and soon learns they possess an Ancient Magic that can ultimately be used for good or evil. They’ll be able to shape the wizarding world and write their own legacy. As the story takes place about a century prior to Harry Potter’s enrollment, fans won’t likely see a lot of familiar faces. However, players can look forward to the many magical creatures introduced in that series or seen through Newt Scamander’s adventures in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The trailer teased a number of recognizable species, and there are likely many more to encounter once the game releases in 2021. So far 12 distinct creatures have been spotted in the official trailer. This includes some of the lesser fantastic beasts, such as the pets students are permitted to take with them to Hogwarts, as well as some of the more sinister entities not originally included in the Fantastic Beasts guidebook.

Hogwarts Legacy: All 12 Confirmed Creatures So Far

Additionally, in 2018 rumors of this game started to spread like wildfire when someone leaked some early footage of Hogwarts Legacy on Reddit. This included what looked like a Fanged Geranium snapping at a student in Herbology class and the player fighting a horde of Goblins. Since magical plants are their own category and Goblins are considered intelligent humanoid creatures, they will not be included on this list. The leaked footage was taken down shortly after by Warner Bros. due to copyright infringement.

  1. Acromantula This species of giant spider was first introduced in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets when Care of Magical Creatures instructor Rubeus Hagrid was discovered to own one as a pet. Normally known for their taste of human flesh, one can be seen getting blasted by a student in the Hogwarts Legacy trailer.
  2. Boggarts Though technically considered an amortal non-being, Boggarts are shapeshifters that assume the form of the observer’s worst fear. No one knows what they actually look like and captured Boggarts are typically kept in inanimate objects, such as the cabinet in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. The charm Riddikulus can be used to banish the Boggart by transforming it into something comical such as a mechanical dummy in the trailer.
  3. Cats Probably he most ordinary creature on this list, cats are a common pet typically associated with witches and wizards. One can be seen in what looks like a Ravenclaw common room. Whether it’s an actual cat or Animagus in disguise is yet to be determined.
  4. Dementors Considered one of the foulest creatures to traverse the wizarding world, Dementors are known for feeding on a person’s happiness or even sucking out the very soul from a body. They can be seen eerily floating through what is most likely Azkaban.
  5. Dragons It’s hard to imagine a magical world without the presence of dragons. A student is seen dodging a fiery blast from one of these winged-reptilian beasts and the trailer ends with a dragon flying off towards Hogwarts castle.
  6. Graphorns Known for having skin tougher than a dragon’s and often aggressive in nature, the Graphorn is a large saber-toothed beast with a humpback and tentacle-like appendages around its mouth. One can be seen charging at a student while another allows a different student to pet it, perhaps demonstrating some distinct reactions a player can get depending on what moral choices they make.
  7. Hippogriffs Buckbeak is probably the most memorable Hippogriff and faithful mount of Harry and Hermione when rescuing Sirius Black in The Prisoner of Azkaban. Hippogriffs are winged horse-like creatures with the head of an eagle. Two players can be seen flying on Hippogriffs over a scenic peninsula.
  8. Inferi An Inferius is a zombie-like corpse that’s specifically been reanimated by the Dark Art of Necromancy. While not technically a beast, these undead skeletal creatures are used as puppet minions for dark wizards like Voldemort, who summoned an army of them to guard a Horocrux hidden in the cave in The Half-Blood Prince. These creatures of the dark can also be seen marching through another cave-like setting in the Hogwarts Legacy trailer.
  9. Mooncalves It’s hard not to notice the adorable, long-necked Mooncalves being fed mid-trailer. Known to only come out during a full moon, Mooncalves were first introduced in the original Fantastic Beasts movie.
  10. Owls About as extraordinary as cats, the trailer opens with what is presumably the player’s owl hitching a ride on the carriage to Hogwarts. Whether another pet option or dutiful postal worker, owls are a common site in the wizarding world.
  11. Thestrals It may look like an enchanted carriage is pulling itself in the trailer’s opening scene, but experienced witches and wizards will know it’s actually being pulled by Thestrals — winged reptilian-like horses with skeletal bodies that can only be seen if the observer has witnessed death.
  12. Trolls These giant beasts are filled with monstrous strength and greater stupidity. Typically armed with a giant club, the Hogwarts Legacy trailer has come full circle from the introductory encounter with a mountain troll in the girls’ bathroom seen in The Sorcerer’s Stone.

Hogwarts Legacy has only teased a small amount of content for what is described to be an immense open world game, and fans can expect to see more of a menagerie than what’s listed here. It’s doubtful a Portkey Games world would exclude the presence of popular creatures like werewolves, pixies, Nifflers, or phoenixes, so Magizoologists can look forward to seeing a wide variety of fantastic beasts as they explore the wizarding world in this upcoming title.
