The final Harry Potter movie was released back in 2011, which means that there has been more than enough time for them to create a remake. It would be hard to beat the original cast, but there are several up-and-coming actors who would make the cut. It would be a film of epic proportions, especially as we continue to grow in the field of animation.

We have compiled a list of some of the actors we would cast if this remake were to happen in the next few years. Some are better fits than others, but they would all come together to pull off an amazing movie.

Updated on December 12th, 2020 by Mark Birrell: Harry Potter is such a huge story, with so many characters and so much expectation attached to it, that only the best actors will do for the various main parts that would need to be cast for any new movies. We’ve added an extra 5 incredibly talented actors to this list of people who would be worthy of the beloved roles up for grabs in a potential remake.

15 Nonso Anozie as Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody

Nonso Anozie has been a recognizable face in major movies for many years, even if his name isn’t as famous as it should be. With roles in big-budget fantasy kids movies like Pan and Artemis Fowl in recent years, he’s also certainly going to be accustomed to the ins and outs of a huge production like any Harry Potter remake would be.

At a towering 6’6″, Anaozie has more than enough physical stature to play the intimidating “Mad-Eye” Moody, not to mention a booming voice when he wants to use it.

14 Donald Sutherland as Albus Dumbledore

Donald Sutherland has been in the industry since 1962 and he would be perfect for the role of Albus Dumbledore. He has played roles in films such as The Hunger Games, Pride & Prejudice, and A Time To Kill.

He has a voice that demands attention but is also caring when it wants to be. Sutherland’s features match that of the elder wizard and we can already imagine him casting magnificent spells as he portrays this timeless character.

13 Thandie Newton as Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange is an unforgettable villain in Harry Potter and the role definitely requires a veteran. She was played by the great Helena Bonham-Carter in the movies and there aren’t many who could live up to the incredibly high standard she set.

Thandie Newton is a veteran of all types of blockbusters and indies, bringing a mysterious and passionate energy to her roles. Plus she could nail the wild cackle that would be required for Bellatrix.

12 Alex Lawther As Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom always had an air of clumsy awkwardness about him as he struggled to stay on par with his classmates. Alex Lawther would be the best actor for this role based on his appearance alone. He has been in several productions like The Imitation Game, Black Mirror, and Howards End to name a few.

He is an English actor and would play the part exceptionally well with his current experience. Lawther would find a way to portray Longbottom’s character arc in a way only he knows how which would really bring this remake to life.

11 Chiwetel Ejiofor as Sirius Black

Sirius is a very important–and very tragic–character in the sprawling story of Harry Potter and the role needs a certain amount of convincing menace and pathos brought to it.

Gary Oldman was a perfect choice for Sirius Black in the movies as he came from a background rich in relatable dramatic characters and larger than life villains. Thinking about his Oscar-nominated performance in 12 Years a Slave and the big shoes that he filled when he took on the role of Scar in the Lion King remake, Ejiofor seems perfect for the role also.

10 Michael Fassbender As Lord Voldemort

Michael Fassbender has the face and the eyes to become the new Lord Voldemort. The angle of his face, combined with a stare that seeps into your soul is what makes him a match. He has acted in Shame, Prometheus, X-Men: First Class, and Steve Jobs.

He is of German descent and Irish descent meaning and he has an air about him that wreaks of superiority. Fassbender would make a great villain and he should consider a role like this in the future.

9 Lennie James as Remus Lupin

One of the few characters arguably even more lovable and tragic than Sirius Black, Remus Lupin requires an even softer touch with an even more subdued power lurking beneath the calm exterior.

Lennie James has proven his talents in many excellent movie roles in the past but most people know him for his long-lasting role as Morgan in the Walking Dead universe, and anyone who’s familiar with his performance will be able to tell you just how well he can display those nuanced emotions that flesh Lupin out.

8 Julie Andrews as Professor McGonagall

Julie Andrews is a classic character in the world of acting, and her personality would fit perfectly with the role of Professor McGonagall. She is up in years, but she has had a part in other hit films like The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, and The Princess Diaries.

Some may say she is a bit too bubbly, but others will understand that she has a stern side she could release for the role. This might not be the musical she is used to, although, it would be the perfect ending to her long resume.

7 Zendaya as Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood exudes a strange energy in HarryPotter, and it’s part of what makes her such a compelling and memorable character. There are few people who can hold as indescribable a power over audiences as Zendaya can, so she would be on the top of any producer’s casting wish list.

With her role as Mary Jane in the MCU Spider-Man movies, she’s demonstrated that, even though she’s a huge star, she can be a team player in a massive ensemble for an effects-driven blockbuster.

6 William Shatner As Hagrid

Hagrid could only be played by a special soul who could portray the sensitive side of this half-giant. This actor’s face, as well as his voice, would blend perfectly with the attitude that we would expect this character to have.

William Shatner is well-known for his roles in various Star Trek movies, so it only makes sense that he would then move on to a different sort of fantasy film. He is still starring in films to this day, and we hope he is one day cast in this epic remake.

5 Adam Driver As Professor Snape

It would be hard to beat a performance by Alan Rickman, but we suspect that Adam Driver could be the man for the job. We have already seen his iciness in Star Wars, so this could be the next step in his movie journey.

Driver has the dark locks and stern face that we would expect from such a man as Professor Snape. Some may say they could only see him as Kylo Ren, but we can already picture him in this remake.

4 Thomas Brodie-Sangster As Draco Malfoy

This British actor might seem like a strange pick to some for the role of Draco Malfoy, but with a bit of imagination, it could happen. He has starred in the Maze Runner series, Love Actually, and Game of Thrones, so this would be a great stepping stone in his career.

He has a demeanor that could fit with that of Draco Malfoy as he sneers down at those he thinks are less than him. A quick dye job and a change of clothes could have everyone seeing him in the role in no time.

3 Rachel Redford As Hermoine Granger

Rachel Redford is fairly new to the acting scene, with only a few roles in The Riot Club, The Christmas Kid, and Gap Year on her resume. It makes her perfect for the role as it will take someone new to the scene to portray Hermoine Granger in a new light.

Emma Watson played the role exceptionally well, but we believe that this actress has what it takes to make viewers believe she is the new and improved Hermoine Granger. She is British and her accent is on point to blend in with the way we would expect the characters to sound.

2 Tom Holland As Ron Weasley

Tom Holland is a special sort of character who we could see in the role of Ron Weasley. He is the newest Spider-Man, but we don’t believe this would tint his reputation as our new favorite ginger.

A quick dye of his hair and a wand in his hand would have us seeing sparks as we lay our eyes on the newest addition to the Harry Potter family. It might not be the expected choice, but a remake would rely on the unexpected to make it truly exceptional.

1 Asa Butterfield As Harry Potter

This actor was born in London and has starred in several productions like Hugo, Ender’s Game, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and Sex Education. He already has the dark hair and curious blue eyes that resemble that of Harry Potter.

We could see him risking his life to save his friends as he inwardly struggles with the truth of his past. It would be one for the history books if he was cast as the lead in this remake.
