The year 2019 is going to be a big one for movies. There are several movies coming out in the upcoming year with all genres of film getting some big titles.

Le Voyage dans la Lune, translated to A Trip to the Moon, from 1902is often considered the first science fiction movie ever made. Since then Hollywood has released hundreds of sci-fi movies over the years, and the genre only continues to grow. Each year, movie studios add more and more movies to the sci-fi genre, especially since many superhero movies are now considered sci-fi. The genre of science fiction has changed over the years, but many sci-fi movies deal with elements of time travel, futuristic technology, and dystopian futures filled with non-human characters.

Several types of films are now included under the branch of sci-fi, which has allowed the genre to grow a huge fan base that looks forward to the newest sci-fi movies each year. There are some truly anticipated titles hitting the big screen next year, but there are also some that fans will have to wait quite some time for.

With that said, here are 18 Sci-Fi Movies Coming in 2019 (And 15 We Still Have To Wait For).

33 Coming In 2019: Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

The giant monster Godzilla has been around since 1954, but the newest version of the character is set to hit theaters in 2019. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will pit Godzilla against three of his most iconic enemiesL Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.

The first movie in this Godzilla series was released in 2014 and directed by Gareth Edwards, but this sequel will be directed by Michael Dougherty and be released on May 31, 2019. Godzilla: King of the Monsters doesn’t seem to have very many actors returning from the first movie, but has gained an impressive cast none the less including Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, and Kyle Chandler.

32 Still Have To Wait For: Flashpoint

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been thriving for the last ten years, Warner Bros. has had some trouble getting their own superhero universe off the ground. In 2017, Warner Bros. released Justice League, which saw six of DC’s most iconic heroes suit up to battle Steppenwolf. Since then, DC seems to be focusing more on solo adventures for their superheroes, including the Flash.

The Flash solo movie is thought to be titled Flashpoint, which would adapt the 2011 comic book of the same name. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have signed on to direct the movie, which could hit theaters potentially in 2020.

31 Coming In 2019: Dark Phoenix

Even though Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox, movies that Fox had already developed will still be hitting the big screen. The next movie in the long-running X-Men series is called Dark Phoenix and will focus on the younger version of Jean Grey played by Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner.

The movie will continue the story from the previous X-Men movies, but mainly include the younger versions of the characters that were first seen in X-Men: First Class. The film has been delayed once, but the current release date for Dark Phoenix is June 7, 2019.

30 Still Have To Wait For: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies were highly regarded by comic book fans, mainly because of director James Gunn. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was going to be a top priority for Marvel Studios going into Phase 4, the movie was postponed after Gunn was fired due to some of his insensitive Tweets.

Disney will still be using James Gunn’s script, but they have yet to find a director to helm the film. The movie is thought to be coming out in 2020, but the film could easily be delayed again if things don’t run smoothly for Disney.

29 Coming In 2019: Captive State

Captive State is an upcoming sci-fi movie that is about aliens enslaving the world while disguising themselves as a peaceful race. The film will be based in a Chicago neighborhood where some people are cooperative with the extraterrestrial force, while others put up a fight.

The movie was co-written and directed by Rupert Wyatt, who is known for directing films like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Gambler. The movie will also include big named actors such as Vera Farmiga, John Goodman, and Machine Gun Kelly. The film currently has a March 29, 2019 release date.

28 Still Have To Wait For: Avatar 2-5

James Cameron took the world by storm when he released Avatar in 2009. The film took place in the fictional world of Pandora, where Jake Sully decides to go against his military orders to help a humanoid race called Na’vi. The movie made over $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office, yet fans have been waiting for a sequel.

The film has been delayed numerous times, but the movie is currently aiming at a December 2020 release date. Not much is known about the plot, but Cameron is also planning on three more Avatar sequels from 2021 to 2025.

27 Coming In 2019: Captain Marvel

Marvel has released 20 movies over the past ten years, starting with Iron Man in 2008. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has adapted several superheroes from the pages of comic books, and a new hero is being adapted in 2019.

Brie Larson is starring in Captain Marvel, which revolves around a war between the two alien races the Skrull and the Kree. The movie will take place in the 1990s, and will bring back popular S.H.I.E.L.D. agents like Nick Fury and Agent Coulson. Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 8, 2019.

26 Still Have To Wait For: Jurassic World 3

Movie-goers minds were blown when Jurassic Park came to theaters in 1993. Many people had never seen CGI used in this capacity, which is part of the reason why the movie won three Academy Awards. Fast forward past two sequels to 2015, and Universal was ready to release Jurassic Park 4, which went by the name Jurassic World.

The third Jurassic World film may not be out for a few more years, but the movie is no doubt happening since the first two films made an incredible amount of money. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to return for the movie, but fans will just have to wait a little longer for this one.

25 Coming In 2019: Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel is an upcoming sci-ci movie that is based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga Battle Angel Alita that ran from 1990 to 1995. The movie is being co-produced by James Cameron, with Robert Rodriguez directing the film.

Rosa Salazar is playing the cyborg Alita, but the movie will also star Jennifer Connelly, Eiza González, Mahershala Ali, and Christoph Waltz. Fans only have to wait a few more months to see this Sci-Fi adaptation, since the film is coming to theaters on February 14, 2019.

24 Still Have To Wait For: TRON 3

TRON has gained a huge following since the game and movie first came out in 1982. The original film starred Jeff Bridges, who also returned for the sequel 28 years later in 2010. The sequel was called TRON: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.

For years, the series has been rumored to be getting a third movie, but that won’t be happening in 2019. There have also been rumors of a reboot starring Jared Leto, but neither TRON 3 nor the reboot have gained a lot of momentum in recent years.

23 Coming In 2019: Avengers: Endgame

While there are only three Marvel Cinematic Universe movies hitting theaters in 2019, one of them is the highly anticipated sequel Avengers: Endgame. This will stand as not only the third movie in the Avengers series, but the 22nd overall film in the MCU. This movie will deal with the aftermath of Thanos’ destruction in Avengers: Infinity War.

The trailer for the film dropped a few weeks ago giving fans their first look at the movie, but it didn’t give a whole lot away about the plot. Many people have theorized that the Avengers will time travel to stop Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones, but people won’t know for sure until Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019.

22 Still Have To Wait For: Cloverfield 4

The Cloverfield movies have created a huge fanbase since the first found footage monster movie came out in 2008. The film received a sequel in 2016 called 10 Cloverfield Lane and another surprise sequel that went straight to Netflix called The Cloverfield Paradox. While The Cloverfield Paradox attempted to tie the first two movies together, the film was almost universally panned by fans and critics.

That being said, J.J. Abrams has promised a true” Cloverfield sequel that will hit theaters “very soon,” but so far virtually nothing has been heard about the movie. Given the track record with Paramount and the Cloverfield films, fans will likely have to wait a few more years for Cloverfield 4.

21 Coming In 2019: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Comic fans were thrilled when Sony and Marvel Studios struck a deal to let Spider-Man appear in Captain America: Civil War. Eventually, the famous web-slinger got his own movie in 2017 called Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is getting a sequel in 2019 called Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Tom Holland will return to the role of Peter Parker, along with Jon Watts returning to the director’s chair. Fans will also get to see Mysterio adapted for the big screen, who will be played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Spider-Man: Far From Home is swinging to theaters on July 5, 2019, and will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

20 Still Have To Wait For: Cyborg

Actor Ray Fisher is currently playing the role of Victor Stone, aka Cyborg in the DC Extended Universe. He briefly appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, had a bigger role in Justice League, and is supposed to be getting a solo movie in 2020.

Fisher was rumored to be leaving his superhero role, but the actor has since confirmed that he has no plans to step away from the role for the foreseeable future. Not a lot is known about the Cyborg solo movie, but the film may be using a scrapped storyline from Justice League.

19 Coming In 2019: Men in Black International

Men in Black International is the latest movie in the Men in Black film series. The original Men in Black was released 21 years ago in 1997, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the leading roles. The pair returned for two sequels, but they are handing the torch off to Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson for the fourth Men in Black adventure.

The first trailer for the movie recently dropped, which showed a MIB agent from the U.S. going to London to team up with a MIB agent from England. Men in Black International is heading to theaters on June 14, 2019.

18 Still Have To Wait For: Starship Troopers

A Starship Troopers reboot has long been in development, but fans have seen little progress made for the movie. As of 2016, Mark Swift and Damian Shannon were taking on the script for the film, but other than that, very few details have been revealed for the reboot.

The original movie was released in 1997, and has since gotten a number of live-action and animated sequels. The last film was titled Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars, which was released in 2017, but fans are still waiting for the reboot movie.

17 Coming In 2019: Shazam!

While Marvel has a few movies coming out in 2019, so does DC. One of DC’s upcoming movies is called Shazam!, which focuses on a 14-year-old boy who can transform into an adult superhero named Shazam. The film is being directed by David F. Sandberg and will star Zachary Levi as Shazam, and Asher Angel as the young Billy Batson.

While the film is still a part of the DC Extended Universe, Shazam! will be more of a standalone movie as compared to previous DC movies. Shazam! will be released on April 5, 2019.

16 Still Have To Wait For: Dune

Sci-fi fans got to see Dune adapted for the big screen in 1984 thanks to David Lynch, but they are also getting a remake by Denis Villeneuve, just not in 2019. The movie is currently without a release date, but has cast Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson.

The film will once again be based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel of the same name, but will only adapt the first half of the book. Villeneuve has made the sci-fi movies Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 in recent years, so Dune will be one film sci-fi buffs will want to watch out for.

15 Coming In 2019: Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe is a franchise that was created by the toy company Mattel in 1981, when they released the first He-Man action figures. The franchise has received many comics, TV shows, and movies over the years, but a new Masters of the Universe will be arriving in 2019.

Not a whole lot is known about the upcoming movie, but it is being directed by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee. Given Skeletor’s reputation as He-Man’s arch-enemy, he will likely be adapted once again for this upcoming film. The movie is currently being released at the end of the year, with a December 18, 2019 release date in place.

14 Still Have To Wait For: Godzilla Vs Kong

While Godzilla will be squaring off against some of his most famous foes in 2019, fans will have to wait until 2020 to see him battle King Kong. Fans have seen many remakes of the 1933 classic King Kong, but the most recent version, and the tallest, was brought to the big screen in 2017 with Kong: Skull Island.

The after-credits scene teased the monsters that would be included in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and both King Kong and Godzilla are a part of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures growing MonsterVerse movie series.

13 Coming In 2019: Terminator 6

The Terminator movies are one franchise that just won’t stay, well, terminated. The first film came out in 1984 and was followed up in 1991 with Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The series has never really been the same since then, yet more Terminator movies keep coming out.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, or a CGI version of Arnie, has appeared in every movie to date, and will be returning for Terminator 6 in 2019. What makes this film unique is that Linda Hamilton will also be returning to her role of Sarah Connor. Terminator 6 is currently in post-production and is coming to theaters on November 1, 2019.

12 Still Have To Wait For: Machete Kills Again… In Space

While the first Machete movie came out in 2010, the character appeared in several films before this. Played by Danny Trejo, Machete has appeared in all of the Spy Kids movies as well as appearing in a fake trailer during the Grindhouse double feature film.

At the end of Machete Kills, a fake trailer for Machete Kills Again… In Space showed what the premise of the next movie would be, but nothing has happened just yet. Machete and Machete Kills director Robert Rodriguez is currently working on the sci-fi movie Alita: Battle Angel, so fans will probably have to wait a while for Machete’s space adventure.

11 Coming In 2019: Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Between the numerous amounts of TV shows, movies, card games, and video games, almost everybody has probably at least heard of Pokémon. Pokémon rose to popularity in the 1990s, but the little pocket monsters rose in popularity again when Pokémon Go was released in 2016.

Pokémon is now returning to the big screen with the franchise’s first live-action film called PokémonDetective Pikachu. The movie will star Justice Smith as well as Ryan Reynolds, who will voice Pikachu. The film has already been praised for the live-action versions of the Pokémon characters, and fans can see them in full glory on the big screen on May 10, 2019.

10 Coming In 2019: The New Mutants

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe will likely rule the box office in 2019, 20th Century Fox still has a few X-Men movies to release before Disney takes over their properties. One of these movies is called The New Mutants and is a horror/sci-fi movie that will center on a group of teenage mutants imprisoned in a secret facility.

Much like Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants was delayed for reshoots, but will be released on August 2, 2019. Josh Boone is directing the flick with Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Charlie Heaton starring.

9 Still Have To Wait For: The Eternals

One movie Marvel is planning after 2019 is called The Eternals. While the Eternals storyline might not be as widely known as characters like Spider-Man and Iron Man, the characters in Eternals are incredibly important to Marvel mythos.

The immortal beings called Eternals were important in shaping human history and civilizations. At this point, fans know that The Eternals will be happening, but the movie hasn’t been given a release date just yet. The film will likely take the spot of one of Marvel’s untitled movie’s release date, but it won’t be happening in 2019.

The third movie in his Unbreakable trilogy is titled Glass and will bring together the characters David Dunn, Kevin Wendell Crumb, and Elijah Price. The film has been written and directed by Shyamalan and is set to hit theaters soon on January 18, 2019.

7 Coming In 2019: Chaos Walking

In recent years, both Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley have grown to become incredibly popular actors. Holland is, of course, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man, while Ridley is part of the Star Wars franchise as the character Rey. Along with Ridley and Holland, Mads Mikkelsen and Nick Jones will also have roles in the movie.

The upcoming movie is based on a book series by Patrick Ness in which all people living in a dystopian future can hear each others’ thoughts. The film is directed By Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) and is set to release on March 1, 2019.

6 Still Have To Wait For: Alien: Covenant Sequel

One popular sci-fi series that started in the 1970s was Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise. The first two movies have been highly praised by fans and critics, but that can’t be said for the rest of the series. Scott returned to his series in 2012 with Prometheus, which eventually got a sequel called Alien: Covenant in 2017.

Both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant got mixed reviews upon release, which left the next film in jeopardy. While some people still want to see a sequel to Alien: Covenant, the movie doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon.

5 Coming In 2019: Warriors Of Future

Warriors of Future revolves around the story of a dystopian future where a giant meteorite crashes into Earth to heal the planet from global warming and pollution, but in return, it ends everybody in its’ path. The movie is a Hong Kong sci-fi film that will stand as Yuen Fai Ng’s directorial debut.

The movie will star Nick Cheung, Philip Keung, Louis Kool, and Carina Lau. While the film doesn’t have an exact release date, it has been confirmed that Warriors of Future will release in 2019.

4 Still Have To Wait For: RoboCop Returns

Since the first movie’s release in 1987, Paul Berhoeven’s RoboCop has gained a big fan base. The original film got several sequels over the years and even a reboot in 2014 starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, along with actors Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton.

While not very many people enjoyed director José Padilha’s take on the character, Neil Blomkamp will be directing a movie called RoboCop Returns. However, the film is still in development, so it is virtually impossible for the movie to get a 2019 release date.

3 Coming In 2019: Iron Sky: The Coming Race

Many people probably haven’t heard of Iron Sky compared to some of the more popular entries on this list. The movie was released in 2012 and had a truly unique premise. The film revolves around the Nazis setting up a secret base on the moon in 1945, with plans to dominate the world in 2018.

Now seven years after the original, director Timo Vuorensola is returning to direct Iron Sky: The Coming Race. The movie will revolve around humanity trying to survive while fighting an ancient reptilian race that look like dinosaurs. The film will be released on January 16, 2019.

2 Still Have To Wait For: Untitled Matrix Project

One of the best examples of a sci-ci movie is The Matrix. The film was beloved by movie-goers and critics alike, and also won four Oscars in the 2000 Academy Awards. The movie got two sequels in 2003, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

While Neo’s story appeared to be over at the end of The Matrix Revolutions, the Matrix movies might not be over just yet. While the film was originally thought to be a reboot, it is now known that the movie will neither be a reboot or remake, but rather just another film in the series.

1 Coming In 2019: The Last Boy

Set in a dystopian future at the end of the world, this sci-fi drama follows a young boy who is sent to find a place that grants wishes for his ill mother. The movie will be directed by Perry Bhandal, who will make his directorial debut with The Last Boy.
