Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 2Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 will be receiving PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in the future, and people who already own the games can upgrade for free. The Resident Evil series produced some visually stunning games in the previous console generation and fans were hoping that they would receive a current-gen port at some point.

The versions of the new Resident Evil titles that can be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are still the old versions of the game that are running through backward compatibility, where they only benefit from the faster load times of the internal SSDs used by both systems. The one exception is Resident Evil 3 using the DualSense’s lights to match Jill’s current health, giving players a visual indication of how close she is to dying. There are also numerous Resident Evil remakes on modern systems that are also running through backward compatibility, but these wouldn’t benefit much from the new hardware.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The official RE_Games Twitter account has announced that Resident Evil 23, and are receiving PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, which will launch later in 2022. These new versions of the games will feature ray tracing, higher frame rates, and 3D enhanced audio. PS5 owners can also experience the DualSense controller’s Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers. It’s possible this reveal was the Resident Evil announcement Capcom promised recently and it’s certainly great news for fans, even if it’s not an announcement for a brand new game or remake.

The people who already own one of the Resident Evil games on PS4 and Xbox One can upgrade to a digital version of the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version for no extra cost. This should mean that people can download the digital version of the games and can play them while the PS4 or Xbox One disc is in the drive. The PC version will also receive a similar upgrade for free and it will launch at the same time as the console update. There have been leaks about Resident Evil 7 receiving a current-gen upgrade in the past, and many fans speculated that similar updates were in the works for the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, but it wasn’t clear if these would be free upgrades.

Capcom has been producing visually impressive Resident Evil games on consoles and fans have eagerly been awaiting ray tracing and higher frame rate upgrades for these titles. The only title that has really benefitted from the new hardware is Resident Evil Village, which launched in 2021. Resident Evil Village received dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions at launch, alongside the previous consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game looked fine, but Resident Evil Village looked stunning on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the new versions of the older titles should also be impressive.

The PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S upgrades for Resident Evil 2Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 will be released later in 2022.
