Avengers Endgame left the impression that the long-awaited possibility of a Black Widow movie would just no longer be possible. However, Disney has a way of making sure these things happen; now, with the release of the first trailer for Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, which is scheduled for a May 2020 release, the character will soon be subjected to a lot more screen time.

With this greater focus on someone who has always been more of a side character than other MCU leads (Tony Stark, Cap, and Thor), you might be wondering how fierce Black Widow actually is. To find out, let’s look beyond the MCU: here are 5 DC characters she could easily defeat, and 5 she would definitely lose to.

10 Lose: Batman

While there is a very wide variety of super-powered DC heroes and villains who would defeat Black Widow in a fight, Batman begs mentioning because he, like Widow, has no powers. But even though he is technically an average human, Widow really wouldn’t stand a chance. Batman has shown, numerous times, his supreme intelligence, strength, and strategy.

He has beaten Superman in countless fights, both in the comics and on-screen (Batman V Superman), and has also demonstrated, in Justice League: Doom, that he has debilitating contingency plans set in place for every member of the Justice League. Black Widow’s own abilities are no match for the cunning and sheer intellect of Bruce Wayne.

9 Win: Catwoman

While Catwoman is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, and at times, has given even Batman a run for his money, her accomplishments are minimal and insignificant and more than easily matched by Black Widow. As an ex-Russian agent-turned S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, Natasha Romanoff has mastered several forms of fighting, including Karate, Judo, and Kung Fu.

She is also a weapons expert and a skilled assassin and has proven that she can compete with some of the most powerful villains, holding her own against Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive. It’s fair to say that Catwoman would not have lasted a minute against any of Thanos’ lieutenants – that is, if she chose not to run away.

8 Lose: Aquaman

Arthur Curry, King of Atlanta, has many powers, including superhuman strength and durability, as well as the ability to control and manipulate water. He can jump nearly 4 stories, throw 30-ton tanks, and hold his own in a fistfight with Wonder Woman, a literal goddess.

Obviously, if he is in or near water, he is even more powerful, but even in the middle of a desert, there would be little contest between him and Black Widow. Her speed and intelligence might give her a few minutes, but she wouldn’t be able to evade him forever, and, because of his superhuman strength, endurance, and durability, there is very little she could do to actually hurt him.

7 Win: Black Canary

The Black Canary, notable in the CW’s Arrowverse, has little to offer besides her sonic scream. She is strong, but humanly strong, and is an expert and experienced fighter, two things that would certainly meet their match in a fight against Black Widow.

While her sonic scream is potentially debilitating, certain episodes have demonstrated ways to silence it – Black Widow’s intelligence and cunning would allow her to figure out a way to block off the scream – without the scream, Canary is just another human vigilante. At that level, Canary doesn’t stand a chance against the former KGB operative.

6 Lose: The Flash

Barry Allen’s abilities are relatively straightforward – he can run really quick, at 2,532 mph. Between the Black Widow, a skilled, yet human, fighter, this battle would last less than ten seconds.

Barry Allen has proven that non-mutated humans are of little consequence to him. Perhaps when he first got his powers, Widow might have stood a chance – but now, with experience under his belt, there is nothing she could do to slow him down.

5 Win: Deathstroke

Slade Wilson is an expert soldier. He is strong, brutal, and has proven that he can hold his own against the Teen Titans. In this, he and Black Widow are exceptionally similar – both have essentially been on both sides of conflict, with the Black Widow starting as a villain and turning into a hero, and with Deathstroke spending much of his life battling the Titans, yet still showcasing, on several occasions, that he might be a good guy after all.

In fact, this fight could swing either way – both are talented and ferocious. However, once again, Black Widow fought Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive; she is responsible for the death of Proxima and the near-death of Corvus. This feat proves her strength against far more powerful foes, giving her the win against Slade.

4 Lose: Superman

This is not entirely surprising, given that the Flash could easily defeat Widow. Superman, beyond having superspeed, has superhuman strength, durability, endurance, vision, and so on. He is the literal epitome of an over-powered character.

His one weakness, however, is quite the vulnerability, and one that Widow would certainly exploit if she had time to prepare. But, because Kryptonite is rare, and it is unlikely that Widow carries a shard of the green crystal on her utility belt, this fight would be a deafening and instantaneous defeat for Black Widow.

3 Win: Green Arrow

The emerald archer, billionaire, and playboy, Oliver Queen has proven himself to be an incredible warrior. He, at times, has led the League of Assassins, killed Ra’s al Gul, and held his own against a variety of threats, both human and mythical. However, though he is fiercely intelligent and one of the greatest combatants in the DCU, Oliver Queen is still human and has been defeated many times before, sometimes by something as simple as a gunshot.

An early episode of Arrow resulted in Oliver’s near-death after he was shot by his mother. Widow’s skill as a KGB agent, her weapons intelligence, and her strength and knowledge of the different styles of fighting, would give her a powerful edge. It might be a close fight, depending on extraneous circumstances, but Widow would likely win.

2 Lose: Wonder Woman

Princess Diana, daughter of Zeus, is the greatest of the Amazons and is highly proficient with all weaponry. She also possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes, as well as the power of flight.

And, in the movie, she defeated Ares, the Greek god of war, by channeling lightning. There would be no true contest between the Black Widow and Wonder Woman.

1 Win: Joker

The unhinged madman might have his chaotic strokes of brilliance, but he would stand no chance against the Black Widow. His unpredictability might often result in victory, but, as a human with human weaknesses, would surely fall to an onslaught from Black Widow. Yes, Joker has proven himself, on occasion, capable of defeating the Caped Crusader, as well as a host of other heroes.

Yet, Widow has proven herself in the same sense, competing with and defeating characters with far greater abilities than her own. It would be a fascinating battle, as Joker would likely attempt some form of psychological manipulation, which would be more (or less) potent, because of the Widow’s troubled past. However, she is strong, resourceful, and extremely experienced; Mr. J would meet his match with the Black Widow.
