Whether you’re newly engaged or planning to support the bride’s walk down the aisle, there’s no doubt that the event is going to be stressful (in all the good ways it can be). That being said, Hollywood has gifted both brides and bridesmaids with some hysterical romantic comedies to not only relieve stress during the wedding planning process but also remind people of the importance of love in a stressful time.

Here is a look at five films brides should watch before they walk down the aisle and five films that bridesmaids should view before going to the bridal shop.

10 Bride: Monster-In-Law

Monster-in-Law is a romantic comedy that focuses on the dilemma that occurs when a future mother-in-law is not accepting of a couple’s engagement and works to complicate the planning process. That said, the new future daughter-in-law refuses to let the controlling mother put a damper on this exciting time and reciprocates the sabotage of her future mother-in-law.

While this film is quirky and funny, no bride wants to be put in this situation. Brides, please be sure that your future inlaws are not monsters. The 2005 film Monster-in-Law stars Jennifer Lopez, Michael Vartan, and Jane Fonda.

9 Bridesmaid: The Wedding Planner

The Wedding Planner is a 2001 film that stars Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras. While Jennifer Lopez plays the bride in Monster-in-Law, her role in this film’s bridal party is that of the wedding planner.

This iconic film is perfect for the bridesmaids aiding in the planning process with their bride bestie. Every bride could use a little extra help, after all.

8 Bride: The Proposal

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds star as the dynamic duo in this 2009 romantic comedy. When Margaret Tate (Bullock) is denied a visa renewal, she concocts a plan to marry her assistant (Reynolds) in an attempt to stay in the country and keep her career.

This hysterical film follows the rocky road that this decision creates, while the two characters head to Alaska for a family party. Along the way, the two actually begin to fall in love and the film explores the sacrifices people are willing to make for those they deeply care about.

7 Bridesmaid: My Best Friend’s Wedding

This 1997 film stars Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, and Cameron Diaz, as the characters navigate love and the emotional velocity that weddings bring upon people. After being best friends for nine years, Julia Roberts’ character realizes she is in love with Dermot Mulroney’s character after he proposes to his new fiance who is played by Cameron Diaz.

This film is full of ups and downs and should be presented as a movie for a wine night with the bridal party, even if the maid of honor isn’t best friends with the groom.

6 Bride: Bride Wars

What happens when two best friends get engaged and plan their respective weddings on the same date at the same venue? An all-out bridal war!

In this 2009 film, Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway star at the “best” friends and rivaling brides.

5 Bridesmaid: 27 Dresses

This 2008 film centers on the narrative of a near-professional bridesmaid who has been a bridesmaid in 27 different weddings. Her perspective shifts when she meets a guy who is overly cynical about weddings and the constitution of marriage.

Combine this conflict with the protagonist’s sister marrying the man who she has loved long before introducing the two and audiences bask in a multilayered romantic comedy that is 27 Dresses. Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, and Malin Akerman star alongside one another in 27 Dresses.

4 Bride: The Vow

Though not a comedy, The Vow is a remarkable story about the importance of love and a reminder that the vows brides and grooms make to each other are lifelong, for better and for worse, in sickness and in health. When the wife wakes up without any memory of her husband, the duo is launched into some trying times and work to remember what unconditional love is and how to accept one another as they change in the marriage.

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams star alongside each other in this heartwarming (and heartbreaking) narrative based on a true story.

3 Bridesmaid: Isn’t It Romantic?

Isn’t It Romantic is the perfect movie to watch with the bride’s group of bridesmaids. This film plays on the unrealistic Hollywood tropes in reference to romance and romantic comedies.

From tackling body image issues, cynicism toward love, happy-go-lucky songs, dance numbers, and PG13 censoring, this film is a hysterical satire that builds a compelling narrative. Rebel Wilson,  Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, and Priyanka Chopra all star in this 2019 romantic comedy.

2 Bride: Mamma Mia

When a daughter is getting married, she hopes her father will walk her down the aisle, but what if she has three possible fathers? In this quirky musical fueled by ABBA songs, the bride invites all three in hopes of narrowing down her true biological father by the time she is due to walk down the aisle to her groom.

This is a great film to watch as a bride with one’s own mom while singing along to the iconic songs. Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, and Amanda Seyfried all star in this 2008 film.

1 Bridesmaid: Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids is produced by Judd Apatow, who also famously worked on Knocked Up and Superbad. The 2011 film Bridesmaids is a staple for the women of the wedding-planning world. This film is shrouded in stress-induced humor and quirky moments and out of all of the films on this list, Bridesmaids is the reigning champion of bridesmaid movies.

Kristen Wiig, Terry Crews, and Maya Rudolph star in this film together, while the horde of women tries to navigate their bridal party roles with powerplays, drunken ordeals, and even food poisoning. This film is rated R.
