There are six mysteries that the Rick and Michonne series will have to solve. As The Walking Deadwinds down to a close, the franchise is gearing up to release several spinoff series. On top of Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyond, four new spinoffs are joining the franchise, each following Daryl, Maggie and Negan, Rick and Michonne, and an anthology of new and familiar characters, respectively. Of all the upcoming spin-offs, however, Rick and Michonne’s spinoff has the most questions to answer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The spinoff was first announced as a movie trilogy in 2018, the project was ultimately scrapped. Instead, an announcement made at SDCC 2022 revealed that Rick’s story would continue in a six-episode limited series. Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira are both poised to reprise their roles as Rick and Michonne, bringing together a loving reunion that has been in the works for several seasons. Although the series remains untitled, it is set to release sometime in 2023.

With so much to resolve in only six episodes, the untitled spinoff is sure to guarantee action packed into each and every second. Not much of the plot was confirmed during the series’ announcement, though AMC has described the spinoff as “an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world.” Though there may not be an official plot confirmation just yet, there are plenty of loose threads from the original series that the spinoff series will have to tie off.

What Happened To Rick Grimes?

The departure of Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead season 9 was one of the show’s largest departures from the comic series. While it was eventually revealed that Rick had survived the bridge explosion, his family was left reeling from his supposed death, and viewers were left largely in the dark about his fate. Of course, for a spinoff to follow Rick Grimes, the first mystery it has to solve is what has happened to him from the time he was taken away by the Civic Republic until the moment he reunites with Michonne. What kind of state Rick is in remains to be seen; after all, it has been six years since Rick was whisked away from his loved ones to join the CRM. Has he fallen into line with the CRM as a loyal “B” should, or has he maintained his fighting spirit? Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple has teased that fans will see the return of “Red Machete Rick,” alluding to the brutal and violent Rick that showed its face in The Walking Dead season 5. Now, the spinoff will have to reveal what has happened to Rick over the years that could have pushed him into such a state.

Who Did Michonne Find In Her Last Episode?

Upon finding out that the love of her life could still be alive in The Walking Dead season 10 episode 13, “What We Become,” Michonne instantly left the communities — and her children — behind in order to chase Rick’s trail. After embracing her origin and gaining a new pair of leashed walkers, Michonne stumbles upon a pair of survivors in distress who ask for her assistance in catching up with their people — a seemingly massive group of survivors migrating in a pattern similar to that which the walkers have demonstrated before. To reunite Michonne with Rick in the upcoming series, the mystery behind whom these people are and whether they are friend or foe is one that will have to be addressed almost immediately, as this moment is the last we see of Michonne in The Walking Dead and is likely where her story will pick up in the untitled spinoff.

What Has The CRM Been Up To Globally?

The Walking Dead has slowly revealed more information regarding the Civic Republic, but much of their activities still remains a mystery. Their influence around the globe is currently unknown, though hints in World Beyond point to the possibility that the CRM could be involved with — or even based in — a European nation, such as France. The location of the CRM’s main base, called simply “The Hidden City,” is still a heavily guarded secret; but finding the city’s location would be a perfect task for Michonne if that is indeed where Rick was taken. The CRM is a network unlike any other seen in The Walking Dead so far, and their helicopters prove they are capable of traveling overseas. Factoring in their work in biological research and advanced military tactics, there is plenty more to discover about the franchise’s overarching antagonist, and the series’ greatest power couple are the perfect choice to crack the CRM’s secrets wide open.

Will Rick And Michonne Reunite With Any Old Friends?

Through years of surviving through the apocalypse, Rick and Michonne have amassed a found family in those who fought alongside them. After Rick was swept away without a trace, those closest to him — especially Daryl, who he called a brother — never gave up hope of finding him. As The Walking Dead‘s characters begin to go their own ways into their respective spinoffs, it remains to be seen whether or not the series will ever get the meaningful reunions between Rick and those he loves. Seeing Rick reunite with Judith and RJ, who he has never met, would be a beautiful scene — especially as Judith takes more and more after her late brother, Carl. The idea of Daryl continuing through life not knowing that Rick is indeed alive after his years of grief and loyalty is heartbreaking and does a disservice to both his character and the bond between these two brothers. To do Rick’s story justice, the spinoff must tackle whether or not Rick is reunited with his loved ones.

Who Is Major General Beale?

One of the biggest mysteries inside the enigma that is the CRM is Major General Beales. Serving as the Major General of the Civic Republic Military, Beale has yet to be seen; those beneath him, however, like Jadis and Colonel Elizabeth Kublek, have sworn allegiance to his leadership. Pulling the strings from behind the scenes, Beale is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, as well as being partially responsible for the introduction of Project Votus. To get the proper payoff for the slow build-up of Beale’s identity, the Major General will have to be revealed — and likely star as the main antagonist — in the Rick and Michonne spinoff series.

What Happened To Heath?

The Walking Dead has a vast network of characters, and in such dangerous conditions, it’s no surprise that the series is frequently losing characters to one unkind fate or another. However, few characters disappear from the series without some sort of eventual explanation — even Morales finally received a resolution after seven seasons. Heath was a fan favorite during his run, so there was predictable confusion when Heath disappeared without a trace, only to be later confirmed that he was captured by Jadis and traded to the CRM. Even if Heath doesn’t play a major role in the Rick and Michonne series, his fate is one mystery that the spinoff needs to solve in order to do Heath’s character justice.
