Over the course of 36 weeks, Terrace House: Aloha State features 16 total cast members living together (six at a time) in a luxurious Hawaiian mansion. During their stay, the housemates of various ages and backgrounds attempt to find love, achieve their professional goals, and pursue ultimate happiness while cohabitating with complete strangers.

In the four-part series, certain housemates were far more successful than others at forging meaningful romantic relationships. Some left the house immediately after experiencing heartbreak, while others overcame incompatible mismatches to find true love. Here are the absolute best romances and friendships from Terrace House: Aloha State.

9 Taishi & Ryo

Although Ryo was the last member to enter Terrace House in Hawaii and enjoyed the shortest stay, he wasted little time forging a meaningful bond with the always friendly Taishi. In fact, Ryo gave Taishi a piece of advice that forever changed his life.

Toward the end of the season, when Taishi was struggling to express how he felt about Chikako, it was Ryo who suggested that he take Chika to the beach at night on his birthday to express his desire to be a couple. Taishi took Ryo’s sage advice, and the date was a smashing success.

8 Lauren & Naomi

When Naomi Frank confronted Lauren Tasi over her messy bathroom habits at the beginning of the series, it seemed like the two were destined to become enemies. However, after calmly and maturely expressing her point of view, Lauren’s explanation brought the two much closer.

Afterward, Naomi and Lauren continued to grow their friendship until the former decided to leave the house after  10 weeks. Continuing their intercontinental friendship, Lauren visited Naomi while on a fashion shoot in Japan. Over shared lunch, Lauren trusted Naomi enough to confess her feelings about Taishi.

7 Taishi & Wez

As the longest-tenured housemate, it’s no surprise that Taishi made more friends than anyone else. When he wasn’t asking his housemates on a date, Taishi spent a majority of his time in the house with his fellow 29-year-old beer buddy, Wez Nakajima.

Despite being polar opposites personality-wise, Taishi and Wez built a bond based on trust and communication. The two were constantly seen sharing their feelings, collaborating on ways to improve their romances, and making each other laugh. They also shared a love of food and beer, which several underage housemates could not indulge in.

6 Guy & Taishi

Not all of the romantic relationships in Aloha State were romantic. A case in point is the sweet bromance that developed between Taishi and Guy despite being total opposites and nine years apart.

Although nearly a decade younger, Guy provided profound inspiration to Taishi through his work habit, professional excellence as a top-ranked surfer, and overall success. In return, Guy ended up appreciating the words of wisdom the older Taishi imparted on him inside the house, saying “his words resonate with me” just before leaving the house.

5 Guy & Wez

As the two coolest members of the household, Guy also forged a strong platonic bond with rapper Wez Nakajima. When the two weren’t courting other housemates, Guy and Wez spent a lot of time together hanging out with their simpatico laid-back demeanors.

Guy also shared a love of rap music and singing with Wez, although he is far more talented at surfing than crooning. Later, when Taishi was lovestruck, Guy and Wez continually teamed up and poked fun at his ambivalence.

4 Wez & Anna

Although it took a while to heat up, the simmering romance between Wez and Anna ultimately became a top-five Terrace House relationship. Wez’s personality is defined by a chill and carefree aura, while Anna had never really found a guy she genuinely liked before entering the house.

After going on a date or two, Wez and Anna seemed poised for platonic friendship. It wasn’t until Anna left the house and attended Wez’s rap show a month later that he realized how much he liked her. Toward the end, the two hooked up and stayed together after the show concluded.

3 Eric & Cheri

While Cheri ultimately played Eric for a fool by kissing Connor behind his back, their romance was quite pleasant while it lasted. As one of the most genuine and down-to-earth housemates, Eric acted like a total gentleman after Cheri asked him on a date out of the blue.

During their first evening date, Eric and Cheri really connected. Alas, Cheri’s feelings for Connor ultimately alienated Eric and forced them to end their romance.

2 Guy & Niki

As two like-minded 20-year-olds, Guy and Niki had the most natural chemistry of all Aloha State romances. However, after dating a few times and kissing on the couch while watching a movie, the two realized they liked each other but didn’t love each other.

In one of the best and most adorable moments of the series, Guy and Niki mutually agree to remain platonic while embracing with a big hug and kiss. However, even after Niki returned to Japan, she visited Guy during his surfing expo. The two even shared lunch after Guy arrived 40 minutes late.

1 Taishi & Chikako

Considering how their relationship culminated in their wedding engagement after the show ended, Taishi and Chikako had the best romance on Terrace House: Aloha State.

Taishi spent four months searching for “a love worth dying for,” agonizing over Anna, Lauren, and Cheri in the process. However, he fell in love with Chikako at first sight when she arrived at the house when he was home alone. Divorced from her husband one year prior, Chikako opened her heart to Taishi, and the two became an official couple by the end of the series.
