Star Trek Day occurs on the anniversary of The Original Series’ debut on NBC in 1996. 2022 continued a recent trend for the franchise by offering many new reveals for its myriad series on Paramount+. This year brought the first look at Star Trek: Picard‘s final season, which brings together the entire The Next Generation crew for the first time in two decades.

Star Trek Day also revealed teases for all the franchise’s existing streaming series, with some surprising additions and returns to their respective crews, including Carol Kane. The franchise also boldly goes into podcasts with an intriguing original featuring fan-favorite villain Khan, written by key Star Trek writer and director Nicholas Meyer.

9 Khan – Ceti Alpha V

Khan Noonien Singh reigns among Star Trek villains fans love to hate. Though he only appears twice in the entire franchise, his legacy reaches far into the present and that includes Star Trek’s first-ever scripted podcast. Star Trek Day revealed that Khan – Ceti Alpha V will explore the period after Captain Kirk left Khan on the titular planet.

The podcast comes courtesy of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan writer and director Nicholas Meyer, who also wrote and directed the sixth movie, The Undiscovered Country. Meyer reportedly worked on a mini-series featuring Khan, though it seems that now will become the podcast.

8 The Outrageous Okona Returns

A brief clip from Star Trek: Prodigy revealed that Thadiun Okona, better known to fans as “The Outrageous Okona,” returns in a future episode of the animated series. Billy Campbell originated one of The Next Generation’s best roles after season one in a single appearance in the late 1980s and returns to voice the character.

Okona now wears an eye patch over his left eye, but still wears consistently flamboyant clothes. Campbell also voiced Okona in a brief cameo in Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ second season.

7 Murf Undergoes A Metamorphosis

The extended clip from Prodigy’s upcoming season also reveals that Murf undergoes a mysterious metamorphosis. Murf, a gelatinous creature who can change shape, emerges from some kind of cocoon but fans don’t get to see their next form yet. This huge change all plays out as Admiral Janeway pursues the Prodigy and its unusual crew.

The second half of Star Trek: Prodigy season one airs on Paramount+ on October 27th for subscribers in the U.S., Latin America, Australia, South Korea, and the U.K. The show arrives in other countries later in 2022.

6 Burnham Rides A Speeder Bike

Captain Michael Burnham rides a speeder bike style vehicle in the intriguing first look at Star Trek: Discovery season five. While the ride Burnham uses bears only a superficial resemblance to the classic Star Wars Imperial ground vehicle, it promises some big action and adventure for the show’s upcoming season.

The set tour video released for Star Trek Day accompanied a synopsis for the new season, which indicates the crew encounters a mystery involving an ancient power, leading to a galaxy-spanning adventure.

5 Tilly Returns

The sneak preview for season five also revealed that Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman, returns. Tilly left the crew to teach at Starfleet Academy in season four. Wiseman’s appearance behind the scenes and also in costume as Tilly on the Discovery bridge set confirms what many fans had been hoping for.

Her role on the ship remains unclear, though, and it’s not clear if she returns as a regular or a guest. Season five, still filming and undated so far, will likely chart Tilly’s evolution as an officer and person as she comes back to the ship.

4 The Wayfarer

The Star Trek Day event also revealed an exciting sneak preview of an upcoming Lower Decks episode. The brief but intriguing preview for “Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus,” available to stream October 13th on Paramount+, reveals a new Starfleet ship named the Wayfarer coming to the Cerritos rescue against Romulan attackers.

The Wayfarer represents the first Sovereign-class ship to appear in canon that isn’t the Enterprise-E, among the coolest Star Trek ships ever. The new ship outwardly looks identical to the iconic Enterprise, first introduced in Star Trek: First Contact.

3 The Titan

Another new ship made a huge splash in the Star Trek: Picard season three trailer. The trailer revealed that Picard, Riker, and company use a new ship called the U.S.S. Titan to go after Dr. Beverly Crusher, played by Gates McFadden. Seven of Nine serves as the Titan’s commander in her new role as a Starfleet officer.

Fans likely recognize the ship’s name from Riker’s first command, but this new ship differs from that one significantly. The original Titan appears in Lower Decks season two and is a Luna-class ship. According to TrekCore, by way of showrunner Terry Matalas, the new ship is a New Constitution-class.

2 Crusher Needs Help

Crusher seemingly gets captured in Picard season three, setting off an intergalactic pursuit to rescue her from unknown villains. The new trailer opens with a distress call from Crusher to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. Mysterious aliens attack and board her ship and she’s seen using a phaser rifle against them in one shot.

Though hard to see, Crusher’s attire functions as a great Easter egg for fans. Crusher also wears a coat that bears a strong similarity to the one Bibi Besch wore as Dr. Carol Marcus used in The Wrath of Khan, easily among the best Star Trek movies ever made. Picard season three arrives in February 2023 for U.S. Paramount+ users.

1 Engineer Carol Kane

The biggest and perhaps most fun reveal from Star Trek Day involves Academy Award nominee Carol Kane, famous for her roles in The Princess Bride and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to name but a few, joins Strange New Worlds in season two. She plays Engineer Pelia, a new character likely replacing Hemmer from season one.

A picture of Kane in uniform on the Enterprise bridge reveals she wears some unique articles with her uniform. She wears a broach above the Starfleet insignia, and she also uses a belt that almost seems like a fanny pack, very atypical for Starfleet in this period or any other.
