Charlie Potthast has certainly made a splash on this season of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? Brother to Elizabeth Potthast, Charlie made his dislike for his brother-in-law, Andrei Castravet, clear from the beginning. Along with his father Chuck and sister Jenn, Charlie has spent the season digging into Andrei’s past, on the hunt for some kind of damning information that will force Libby to leave her husband. But Charlie’s investigation into Andrei is ironic considering his own history of trouble with the law that paints a less-than-appealing picture of the Florida native.

Since Charlie arrived in Andrei’s home country of Moldova, he spent his time poking and prodding Andrei and his friends for more information about Andrei’s decision to leave Moldova and move to Ireland. Eventually, Andrei admitted that he left the country due to a corrupt police force. But rather than accepting that response and moving forward to celebrate Libby and Andrei’s Moldovan wedding, Charlie still found reasons to be angry with his brother-in-law. During the wedding reception, Charlie continued to make snide comments, growing angrier and angrier the more alcohol he consumed. At a certain point in the night, despite warnings from his family to slow down his drinking, Charlie became so intoxicated that he could hardly form coherent sentences. His aggressive behavior only became more worrying in his drunken state. He publicly told Andrei to stop taking money from his father and complained to the camera about Chuck paying for the extravagant Moldovan wedding. While Charlie’s inebriated state on the episode was both concerning and embarrassing, his history of troubles with the law paint of the picture of a volatile party animal who doesn’t know where to draw the line.

Like most members of the Potthast family, Charlie has a criminal history. But while his siblings and father have been booked for smaller offenses like driving without a license, Charlie’s arrests are a little more concerning. In May 2005, Charlie was arrested on a DUI charge (via In Touch). During a court hearing in August 2005, Charlie pled not guilty. By April of the next year, the charge was reduced to reckless driving, and Charlie was placed on one year of probation and forced to attend DUI school before the case was closed in February 2007. But that wasn’t his only issue with the law. In December 2006, in the middle of his DUI probation, Charlie was arrested on a third-degree felony charge for possession of cocaine and two counts of first-degree misdemeanor of possession of drug paraphernalia. Again, he tried to plead not guilty to the charges, but eventually withdrew that plea and entered a best interest plea. Once again, he was sentenced to probation, and that case was closed in 2008.

Clearly, Charlie’s drunken behavior at Libby and Andrei’s wedding isn’t an isolated incident. His prior DUI charge, as well as the possession of cocaine, suggest that Charlie likes to have a little too much fun while letting loose on the weekend. More importantly, it’s clear Charlie doesn’t know where to draw the line between normal “partying” and problematic behavior. Rather than catching a cab home after drinking too much or limiting his intoxication to legal substances, Charlie continues to push the limits of appropriate conduct. His actions at Libby and Andrei’s wedding are yet another example of his lack of self-control. It’s clear Charlie is somewhat of a party boy who cares more about having “fun” than how his actions affect other people.

In truth, Charlie Potthast has no room to judge Andrei. While he initially came across as a concerned and protective brother, his continued antics now make him seem like a jealous and selfish individual. His history of drug and DUI charges support that general idea. While many viewers were mortified by Charlie’s behavior at the wedding, it now seems like drunken, aggressive behavior might just be the norm for him.
